In June of 1864, the Sheldon Mining Company and the Columbian Mining Company merged, forming the Sheldon and Columbian Copper Company. At the time of the merger, the Columbian had two working shafts; the Sheldon five. After the merger, three of the shafts were closed and used for winzes to connect operating levels of the mine. The remaining four were named Stewert No. 1, Stebbins No. 2, Banker No. 3, and Bloodgood No. 4 (thought to be the mine captains at the time of merger). The mine worked the Isle Royale lode, which was known at the time to be rich in copper and silver. Operations continued until 1870 when erratic mineralization of the lode at depth forced the company to close. Since the opening of the Sheldon in 1853, 1,463,000 lbs. of copper were mined from this location. Copper crystals, silver, datolite, and chalcocite can be found here.

11 valid minerals.

Detailed Mineral List:

Algodonite
Formula:(Cu1-xAsx)
Calcite
Formula:CaCO3
Habit: Massive
Colour: white
Fluorescence: none
Description: Calcite is a common mineral in the Sheldon-Columbian mine.
Datolite
Formula:CaB(SiO4)(OH)
Habit: nodules and veins of pale white datolite.
Colour: white
Fluorescence: none
Description: In May 2014 a 10 year old boy discovered a "nest" of a mineral that turned out to be datolite on the eastern side of the rock pile. he found several small nodules that were identified as datolite.

Domeykite
Formula:Cu3As
References:
Epidote
Formula:(CaCa)(AlAlFe3+)O[Si2O7][SiO4](OH)
Habit: massive light green epidote
Colour: green
Fluorescence: none
Description: massive epidote. Collected May 22 2014
Malachite
Formula:Cu2(CO3)(OH)2
Native Copper
Formula:Cu
Native Silver
Formula:Ag
References:
Olivenite
Formula:Cu2(AsO4)(OH)
Quartz
Formula:SiO2
Fluorescence: none
Description: Previous entry made for find at Grand Portage Mine dump about 350 meters southwest. The dump was mistaken for the Sheldon-Columbian Mine. Although never officially recorded, it is doubtless that quartz occurs at the Sheldon-Columbian Mine due to its placement on the Isle Royale lode.
Quartz var. Milky Quartz
Formula:SiO2
Habit: cluster of milky quartz crystals
Colour: white
Tenorite
Formula:CuO
Habit: black coating on copper
Colour: black
Fluorescence: none
Description: Pieces of copper and datolite vein pieces with a black coating has been found by Yalmer Primeau on May 17 2014. Visually identified by him as tenorite
