Gold was discovered in Manhattan in 1905, although some mining had taken place in 1866. Peak production was reached in 1911 from underground mines as well as placer operations.

Arsenolite
Formula:As2O3
Habit: octahedral, sometimes skeletal
Colour: commonly clear but are in some cases colored yellowish or reddish by included minerals
Description: Although H. G. Clinton offered arsenolite for sale in the 1930s, the best specimens resulted from the fire which ended the mine’s productive life. Arsenolite occurs as octahedrons, sometimes skeletal, ranging in size from minute to crystals over 2 cm across. The crystals are commonly clear but are in some cases colored yellowish or reddish by included minerals. Collectors have found nice euhedral crystals on charred mine timbers and on the walls of the vertical shaft.
