Crinoidal Limestone with two small quartz veins. The limestone comes from the Carboniferous Loughshinny formation, on one of the layers of intensely folded strata. The field of view is estimated, but the lens cap has a diameter of 5 centimeters.

This specimen was found in the alluvial gravel in the Buffalo Gap National Grasslands. The closest rock name in the Mindat data base that I could find was Crinoid-limestone; however, this sample has been silicified. Acid tests on both the crinoid columns and the matrix showed no results. The hardness throughout the specimen was that of quartz. ...
