Power Bombs are the one of the ultimate weapons in theMetroid series. They are a heavily upgraded version of standardBombs, creating a large superheated explosion that can incinerate organic matter instantaneously (includingMetroids), and destroyBendezium andDenzium alloy. They were first featured inSuper Metroid, and have appeared inMetroid: Zero Mission,Metroid Fusion,Metroid Prime,Metroid Prime 2: Echoes,Metroid: Other M, andMetroid Dread. The number of Power Bombs held at once can be expanded withPower Bomb Expansions, with the exception ofOther M, in where the number of usable Power Bombs is limitless. This weapon is the most powerful conventional weapon in each game in which it appears.
Appearances[edit |edit source]
Metroid: Zero Mission[edit |edit source]
The Power Bombs appear chronologically first during Samus's Zero Mission. After retrieving theLegendary Power Suit, Samus makes her way back to theSpace Pirate Mother Ship. Shortly before reachingMecha Ridley, Samus obtains the Power Bombs. They are not necessary to reach Mecha Ridley, as there is a secret passage above that allows Samus to completely skip them. They can also be used to leave the Mother Ship and return toBrinstar. They can be used to openYellow Hatches and breakPower Bomb Blocks.
Samus should have obtained the Power Bombs from aChozo Statue immediately upon exitingRidley; however,Space Pirates appear to have stolen the Power Bomb upgrade and broken the statue. They later place the Power Bomb in another statue in theChozo Ruins section ofChozodia.
Metroid Prime[edit |edit source]
Metroid Prime brought back Power Bombs as a weapon to destroy walls and rubble made ofBendezium. They are a one-hit kill to Metroids and most other common enemies. They are found inPhazon Mines. Throughsequence breaking used to obtain Power Bombs early, Samus can kill critical bosses much more quickly.
Metroid Prime 2: Echoes[edit |edit source]
Power Bombs function in much the same as they did inPrime inMetroid Prime 2: Echoes. They are used to destroyDenzium. They are obtained after defeating thePower Bomb Guardian underneathTorvus Bog. Unused combinations for the Power Bomb upgrade include theLight Bombs,Dark Bombs, andAnnihilator Bombs.
In theMultiplayer, a power-up similar in destructive nature called theDeath Ball can be acquired.
Super Metroid[edit |edit source]
In their first appearance inSuper Metroid, Power Bombs are used to destroy walls and enemies, as well as open Orange Doors. Power Bombs are used to activate theCrystal Flash technique. Power Bombs cause Samus toBomb Jump as if she had used aMorph Ball Bomb. They can also be used to activate Charge Beam Combos. Like other 2D appearances, Power Bombs are especially useful in finding other types of weak blocks and secret passages.
Metroid: Other M[edit |edit source]
The Power Bomb reappears inMetroid: Other M. It is tested bySamus along with her other weapons very early in the game. However, once Samus on theBottle Ship,Adam Malkovich lets Samus know that he has no intention of authorizing the use of Power Bombs because their blast radius is extensive, and they are powerful enough to incinerate organic matter.[1] This appearance is the only appearance in which the Power Bomb does not require ammunition of any sort. She must charge a regular Bomb while in Morph Ball mode then release while the charge gauge is full. The time it takes to charge can be lessened through the acquisition ofAccel Charges. However, Samus must wait to use a successive Power Bomb. She does not use Power Bombs until one of her final battles, theQueen Metroid battle (curiously, she is not notified that she is able to use Power Bombs in this situation). After that battle and the confrontation withMB, Samus is free to use the Power Bomb.
Metroid Fusion[edit |edit source]
InMetroid Fusion, Power Bombs retain the same function that they did inSuper Metroid, with the addition that they can lure inX parasites. To obtain the Power Bombs, theGalactic Federation sends Samus to aData Room to better defend herself against theSA-X. The SA-X also possesses Power Bombs, using them to destroy walls in the Quarantine Bay and in Sector 6 (NOC).
Metroid Dread[edit |edit source]
InMetroid Dread, the Power Bomb can be found in Hanubia, after defeating another Red Chozo Soldier. It can destroy any block from Beam Block to Power Bomb Blocks. It can also be used to reveal Hidden Blocks. Samus only starts with 2 Power Bombs and along the way withPower Bomb Tanks, Samus can get a total of 15 Power Bombs. However, Power Bomb Tanks can be acquired before even getting the Power Bomb Item.
