Help:References

From Metroid Wiki

Metroid Wiki encourages all articles to be thoroughly sourced so that the content is reputable.

References display in the main article body as numbers:[1][2] and so on. At the bottom of the page, a reference list displays the full text of these references. Clicking on one of the numbers will take you to the appropriate reference.

Adding a Reference

References are inserted into the main body of an article using a pair of <ref></ref> tags.

<ref>References goes between these brackets!</ref>

References should be inserted immediately following the text that calls for the reference, and after any punctuation:

  • Samus is cool[1] and so is Metroid. iscorrect
  • Samus is cool,[1] as is Metroid.[2] iscorrect
  • Samus is cool[1], as is Metroid[2]. isnot correct

References cited in the article will be displayed at the bottom of the article, provided the correct template is added. Use the {{Ref}} template to create a section for displaying a few references, or the {{Refbar}} template to create a section with a scroll bar for displaying many references.

Different Types of References

The following citation templates are used within the <ref></ref> tags depending on the source of the citation.

  • In-game Quotes
{{Cite}} should be used when quoting from in-game text or dialogue. See the template page for specific instructions on usage. Be sure that the quote is precise, and contains only the relevant text. (Use aText Dump to get exact quotes!)
  • Web Pages
{{Cite web}} should be used when quoting from another website. See that page for specific instructions on usage. Any direct quote from a website or reference to such a website should be cited using this template.
  • Developer Quotes
{{Cite person}} should be used when quoting something a specific (real-life) person said. See that page for specific instructions on usage. When citing a quote from a published online interview, use {{Cite web}} instead.
  • Manual Quotes
{{Cite manual}} should be used when referencing a section of text from a game manual. See that page for specific instructions on usage.
  • Book Quotes
{{Cite book}} should be used when referencing a section of text from a book that isnot a game manual. See that page for specific instructions on usage.

Articles that Lack Sources

Articles that lack sources need to be flagged accordingly with the properNotice Template. This alerts others to the issue and categorizes the problem article appropriately. This can be done by adding the {{Sources}} template to the top of a page to request references. Alternatively, if it is a specific section or sentence that needs to be verified, mark it by using the {{fact}} template at the end of the section.

Multiple Citations of the Same Source

Some situations call for citing the same reference more than once. Rather than create the reference multiple times, reuse the initial citation by givingnames to your references:

What you seeWhat you type
If you give two or more references the same name,[1]

They will have the same number and appear combined in the references.[1]

If you give two or more references the same name,<ref name="test">This is a test!</ref> They will have the same number and appear combined in the references.<ref name="test"/>

The first time you cite the reference you wish to use again, you have to use the 'name=' parameter to give a specific, preferably descriptive name. The second time you cite the reference, you simply use an empty<ref name= /> tag, using the same name given to the initial reference. Both references will then share the same number, and in the list of references at the bottom of the page there will only be one entry, with links back to each part of the article from where it is linked, so that the reader can continue to read exactly where they have clicked on the reference, shown below.
