My Brilliant Friend is absorbing, gripping television that demands that you sink into it completely, closing off all distractions.
Mar 19, 2020
"My Brilliant Friend" has returned for a second season more affecting, in an alarming way, than the first, though in every way just as impressive in its penetrating portraiture of Elena (Margherita Mazzucco) and Lila (Gaia Girace), the friends at the center of this tale set in 1950s Naples, based on Elena Ferrante’s Neapolitan novels.

Wonderful show. From the story, the writing, the scenery and the acting. Simply exquisite. Bad reviews are puzzling, can only assume it's for something ridiculous such as an aversion to subtitles.

A gorgeously wrought second season that vividly recreates 1950s postwar Naples, and the complex relationships among its denizens, all of whom are looking for something more among the ruins.

The dramas that play out range from the brutal to the more purely psychological, and all of them are compelling, not least of all thanks to the lead actresses’ stunning performances.

[My Brilliant Friend: The Story of a New Name] still expertly portrays the bewilderingly contradictory dynamics of female friendships. But it also offers savagely dramatic, heartstrings-pulling, blink-and-you’ll-miss-it cliffhangers. ... Season two reconciles that heaviness [of season one] with a pleasurable mix of plot, visual oompf and pacing: It is shot after shot of arrestingly pure swoon, even when it’s damply dreary. What’s more, it moves, giving viewers more twists and turns, more suspense, and more emotionally resonant brushstrokes that bring the largely emotional experience of reading Ferrante’s books into vivid Technicolor.

My Brilliant Friend's marvelous, harrowing sophomore season begins with a fairy-tale air.
Mar 13, 2020
An unusually thoughtful, perceptive series, taking the interiority of teenage girls and women seriously while immersing its audience in a specific culture that, nonetheless, feels all too painfully familiar.

This is a memorable show from the scenario, actors, storyline, to the emotional trigger, social relevance, and music score. A pearl of adaptation and HBO in its best. If you open your world to television with subtitles, you will definitely enrich your life. My brilliant friend season 2 keeps up with the already perfect season 1. Much recommended!

I should not like this show. I should have watched this and muttered 'period drama' to myself and walked away. But I'm so glad I didnt There is so much to admire here. Literally, everything combines to create a piece of artistic perfection. It draws me in without any big action sequences. It relies on subtlety and attention to detail. So good. Thankyou.AWS
