This is a special movie. It has a life force unlike any other crime thriller I’ve seen. It’s about characters who suffer a personal failure but emerge transformed. It’s a violent movie, but not a cruel one, and unexpectedly moving by the end.

While the film's reliance on established crime stories dips a bit too much into the realm of cliché, the overall result is a thrilling ride that's fun to watch, from its quietest character moments to its loudest chase sequences.

Crime 101 (15) is a crime thriller with Chris Hemsworth as Mike the upmarket thief, who never harms his victims or leaves any evidence. Cop Lou Lubenick (Mark Ruffalo) has a theory that a series of crimes all committed off Route 101 in Los Angeles are by one man due to their similar MO. However his views are not shared by his junior partner Tillman (Corey Hawkins) or his captain.Meanwhile Sharon (Halle Berry) works for a high value client insurance broker and is frustrated at her lack of promotion and the excuses she is offered each time she enquires about the partnership promised her. This film is about how the three become entangled in each others lives, fairly obviously in the case of Mike and Lou but less so with respect to Sharon. This wasn't the car chasing, squealing brakes and gunfight saga I expected and is much the better for it. A more involving and intelligent film. People whose experience isn't recognised or hard work rewarded may feel some kinship with Lou and Sandra here. None of the three is particularly happy with their lives. As we soon find out, Mike, despite successfully planning and carrying out his heists, wants out of the game as soon as possible which doesn't please his boss/fence Money (Nick Nolte) who gets biker Ormon (Barry Keoghan) to commit the next crime instead and keep tabs on Mike to see what he is going to do next and steal his ideas. Desperately lonely and looking for a real relationship, Mike chances on Maya (Monica Barbaro) and suggests a date but that brings its own problems. We also follow the lives of Lou and Sharon as they face up to their own failures and insecurities. How their separate stories entwine and come to a conclusion may be implausible but it is certainly an enjoyable ride and I can recommend it as a crime movie different from the 'screech screech bang bang' that one frequently associates with this type of film.

CRIME 101 is a good and enjoyable movie even though it attempts to do a bunch of things that it ends up abandoning or not achieving as well as you would expect. I liked the actors and their performances a lot (especially Chris Hemsworth and Halle Berry who both prove with this movie that they are underrated), the cinematography and how polished the movie looks (which I think is it's strong aspect) but I can't but say that the movie had the potential for something more. It sometimes lacks cohesion and you feel like you are watching random scenes albeit how entertaining they are. And I also find the ending of the movie having a lot of plot holes and being rushed, almost like it prepares you for a sequel of sorts. Anyways, even though CRIME 101 has some felt flaws I believe it is a good movie with tremendous influences from HEAT that I think most are going to enjoy, as did I. Recommended

That Crime 101 comes close to greatness and never quite gets there is not a crime. Even if it was, it’d be a misdemeanor.

A few clunky lines of dialogue aside, the movie mirrors the honorable thief at its center: Methodical, cool, and effective.

Like lovingly warmed leftovers, it has its satisfactions: a charismatic cast, evocative Los Angeles location work, the sort of granular details on diamond couriering and insurance valuation that might give impressionable viewers ideas.

Many films like this may exist, and many more will certainly follow. But Layton’s attempts to differentiate this particular crime film will leave audiences with enough worthy moments to linger on, even if the overall impact is modest.

That “Crime 101” seeks to position itself as a successor to “Heat” is laughable. A more accurate title would have been “Lukewarmth.”

Crime 101 is a crime thriller that relies on style, a strong cast, and a 90s-inspired atmosphere to carry its narrative. There are solid action sequences, especially the car chases, which bring bursts of energy and tension. However, the film gets lost in an overstuffed structure, focusing more on setting things up than truly developing its characters. The interwoven storylines dilute the emotional impact and lead to a predictable, anticlimactic finale. Despite the cast’s charisma and some well-executed action, the script promises more than it delivers. It works as moderate entertainment, but ultimately falls short of its potential.
