Even with the uniformly good performances — and the standout work from Ms. Green — 300: Rise of an Empire is foremost a triumph of production design, costumes, brilliantly choreographed battle sequences and stunning CGI.

Entirely more engaging by dint of being absolutely impossible to take even a little bit seriously. The ruthlessness of Green's character is taken to extremes that meld Medea to the cheesiest serial you can name, and is hence delicious.

Incredible movie about how non-fighters learned to fight to save their country men, and how the main character didn't stop believing and risked it all for his people. Great movie and I wish they would make another one.

Honestly I have no idea why all the reviews here are so negative. It's so much like the previous movie, except without any character development. But hey, watching 300 for the character development is like watching porn for the acting. I just came to see the well choreographed fights and that's what I got. It's quite surprising I didn't even know this movie existed until I looked up 300 sequel, since I wasn't satisfied seeing such a tragic end (I took my time to understand that's how the story should have ended, but by then I already learnt about this movie). So 300: Rise of an Empire is from the point of view of the Athenians. I said in my 300 review that as a kid I'd have hated that movie because it showed red Spartans killing black Persian Immortals, but over here I might have reconsidered since blue was my favourite colour back then. The movie showed the atrocities that took place in Athens and the learning of Leonidas' sacrifice. These became the reasons why Athenians chose to pick arms against Xerxes too. Meanwhile Artemisia has parted ways with Xerxes and is now commanding her own army.In spite of this movie only being produced and not directed by Zack Snyder, his visual effects still remain intact. There is a scene where Themistocles rides a horse to fight the Persians. The camera stays on him for 2 minutes without a single cut. That scene was the reason why I got completely sold for this movie. Of course there was the slow motion sex scene and the Persians doing the atrocities, but that was at least visually appealing, even if it didn't contribute the plot in any manner. The action scenes was all I cared about. It was shot wonderfully. The ending was left open-ended, but it was pretty obvious what happened next.I had watched 300: Rise of an Empire like, 2 years ago. Back then I hadn't watched many movies. Probably this movie wasn't as great as I thought it was. I have watched many movies since then and have seen everyone say how bad this movie is over here (everyone I have met in real life who have watched this movie says they liked it). So I think I will rewatch it before I decide to change my opinion on it. Until then it will be a full-star movie for me.

The design... is stunning, an improvement over 2006′s “300.” And the action never disappoints. It’s a pity this colorless cast doesn’t hold a candle to the Butler/Headey/Michael Fassbender/David Wenham crew of the original, that the writers couldn’t conjure up thrilling speeches to match the original.

The best thing about the new 300: Rise of an Empire is that Zack Snyder didn’t direct it. And the worst thing about it is that Zack Snyder didn’t direct it.

It really is pretty dull, though, with the same moments of campy silliness: the same frowning gym bunnies with the same digitally enhanced abs.

When the film isn’t sloppily directed, it’s a series of lazy filmmaking tics, including fetishistic slow-motion shots of blood, water and sweat, as well as sundry dismemberments, impalings and decapitations.

The empty violence and pointless style are only the biggest problems.

This is a great movie! Just as good as it's predecessor. This film has killer cinematography, great action scenes, beautiful color palettes, a killer soundtrack by Junkiexl. Tom Holkenborg and Zack Snyder are amazing artists and this movie corroborates my claim.

Tavsiye etmiyorum.

With every sequel we see released in the cinema we always have the same mixed feelings; this will be awesome like its predecessor and this will be terrible as nothing is as good as the original. The news that a new 300 film was being released sparked people’s attention, whether that be joy or worry. With 300 and all its inaccuracies but well-paced (albeit it being primarily in slow motion) action sequences can 300: Rise of an Empire live up to it?First off, the film did right by its change of setting. A nice transition from land to sea gave this film a distinct feel and legitimacy it was a separate film and not a money grabbing update on the previous film. However, the main protagonist of the film was a let-down in comparison to Gerard Butler’s gritty wit and charm he delivered in the first film, his speeches lacked and his on screen presence lacked. Although this film references the previous film a few times which is enjoyable to reminisce in, it hardly focuses on the main antagonist of the first film, Xerxes. The new main enemy of the film played her part well, but felt like an unneeded distraction. For an epic like this it should carry some fairly impressive special effects but some scenes felt like they were lacking or over stylised – for a moment I wasn’t sure whether I was watching a film or playing a video game. The film overall is a good action film that diversifies itself from the previous, but is nothing to rave about. A solid action film, however not enough substance, charm or uniqueness to make this anyhting special.
