Tiny Bookshop is one of the best indie games of the year. It’s so soothing it makes you feel like cotton. If you’re looking for a relaxing game you can play without rushing, without stress, and in peace (especially if you’re a bookworm) I’d say grab it without hesitation. And if your reading habit has faltered lately, it even helps rekindle it. What more could you ask for?

It may be too slow-paced and casual for some, but I think almost any player can find something worthwhile in the game.

I did not expect to like Tiny Bookshop as much as I did. It’s an excellent game for book lovers, but also for people who want to unwind, relax and play a simple management game. The fact that Tiny Bookshop doesn’t have very high stakes means you can easily play it as you do other activities. Yet at the same time, it’s very addictive, and it only gets better and better as you play. I still play Tiny Bookshop every week and will continue to do so for a while. The seasons mechanic is great, I enjoy seeing the world evolving around me, and finding the right book for other people is always exciting. The fact that you can also find some new books you never knew about is the icing on the cake, in my opinion. As it stands, Tiny Bookshop comes as highly recommended for cozy game fans and book lovers, but also for anyone who wants a relaxing time after playing all those new shooters and RPGs.

I played using the touchscreen on my Steam Deck, which I found deeply pleasing and responsive compared to using the buttons, which were a little tricky. Decorating my tiny bookshop was great: discovering I could acquire a shop dog was a real joy. The local characters are quite a serious bunch and hold some old dramas and pathos – there is a sense of a lush, lived-in community unravelling secrets and context as the seasons pass by. It is the first new game I’ve found myself truly relaxing into in quite some time: the gameplay is rhythmic and mellow, and, dare I say it, genuinely cosy. Tiny Bookshop provides players with a job that doesn’t feel like a job but a lovely escape into words and stories.

Tiny Bookshop is, dare I say, a fine example of what a cozy game really is—warm vibes, chill but fun gameplay, a heartwarming narrative, pleasant visuals, and calming music. Even if you’re not particularly a book enthusiast, the game is a joy to play for the gameplay and the narrative, and just for some lighthearted and relaxing fun.

Tiny Bookshop may not be breaking any new ground in the cozy genre, but it also doesn’t really need to. It delivers exactly what it claims it will, and what many fans of the genre are already looking for: a peaceful, stress-free escape from the noise of everyday life. Sure, it can get pretty repetitive, and the pacing certainly isn't breaking any records, but overall, I think there's a lot of heart packed into this small indie experience. It's heartwarming, it's comforting, and, if nothing else, it reminds us to slow down, breathe deep, and always take things one page at a time.

Tiny Bookshop has that familiar stickiness that makes me want to continue playing for “just one more day,” but that drive is less about selling books and more about unlocking the next part of a character’s story or a new place in town to sell my products. It’s a shame there isn’t more variety to the core concept of buying and selling books to keep the game feeling fresh after a few weeks of in-game time.

Loved the recommending and learning about new books. Mechanics could have been a bit more complex. Love the vibe, the characters. Really taps into our lack of communal spaces and community. This is not an overwhelming game, yet you can still be detail-oriented and maximize if you want. Progression could have been more linear, I got to the end before I finished all character progression and was no longer motivated to continue.

This is a cute game, but it is lacking in depth. I’ve played through about three seasons, and already the selection of books is very repetitive. The biggest problem is the system where you recommend books to customers. Usually it goes well, but sometimes the bookshop goes off the rails. Once I, for a laugh, recommended “The Lord of the Flies” to a customer who was looking for a heartwarming coming of age story. They thought it was a sweet story about growing up. Uh. Sure. Then you have the customer who asks for an impossible range of qualities in a book. For example one actually asked me for a book with the “less than 200 pages, that's a plus for me. Also, the longer the book, the better!” AI know book request! It’s a fun idea for a game, but it’s very janky.
