Other Namespace

[edit]

Happy new year!

On my wiki site, only the main namespace can use the visual editor. How can I use it in other namespaces?

Thanks.

Italic and double square brackets

[edit]

I, on the itwiki Telegram group someone pointed out that the problem of italic inside the double square brackets has not yet been fixed (taskT52098). 10 years have passed, are any updates planned?Una tantum (talk)08:47, 3 January 2024 (UTC)Reply

Named reference bug.

[edit]

I noticed thatthis edit broke multiple named references. For example "Lynch02" is turned into "Lynch022", but its definition isn't renamed. So it gives the error message "The named reference Lynch022 was invoked but never defined". Is this caused by VisualEditor? Is it a known bug? I didn't make that edit and wasn't able to recreate the bug.Jak86 (talk)09:44, 4 January 2024 (UTC)Reply

It seems to me someone just edited the page and made a mistake when modifying a reference. Mistakes happen, it's a wiki. —TheDJ (Not WMF) (talkcontribs)12:27, 4 January 2024 (UTC)Reply
No, it's a VE "bug". It has been reported for years but the VE implementers like to think it is a "benefit" and don't do anything about it. It occurs when you copy content with named citations between articles. If the citation name already exists in the destination article, VEassumes the incoming citation is a different citaton which must therefore have a different citation name and silently adds "2" (or "3" or ...) to make the citation name unique rather than reuse the existing citation. This may or may not be what the user wants, particularly if they are copying a number of bits of text from one article to another (when you usually want them to continue to share a citation). You really need a pop-up at that point to ask if the user wants to re-use the citation in the article already or create a separate one. This should be done showing the user the existing citation and the incoming citatation. As it is currently (and silently) implemented, you can end up with name, name2, name3, name4, all with the same citation because of the assumption they must all be made different. For me personally, it is a "bug" that creates an annoying number of duplicated citations over time in an article.Kerry Raymond (talk)04:52, 19 April 2024 (UTC)Reply

Pressing and holding spacebar to move text cursor in iOS is unreliable

[edit]

In iOS, pressing and holding the spacebar normally allows you to relocate the text cursor. Trying to do this in the visual editor mode presents difficulties.

First, if the cursor gets moved too close to an inline citation, it will vanish. This makes trying to edit the characters directly next to a citation on mobile nearly impossible, since it’s difficult to get the cursor in the correct position without being incredibly precise.

Secondly, after moving the cursor around multiple times via the spacebar in the visual editor, sometimes the entire browser will freeze up. This is not an issue in source mode. For reference, this is using safari.Duckduckgoop (talk)07:57, 8 January 2024 (UTC)Reply

I've noticed similar issues, but it doesn't seem to be very consistent. Sometimes it does it, sometimes not. It also seems as if sometimes, it causes the screen to scroll up (by itself). —TheDJ (Not WMF) (talkcontribs)13:37, 8 January 2024 (UTC)Reply

Can't "go back" from preview

[edit]

I was trying to get the right tags on a File: link, using the Preview function. This is almost bafflingly complex.

After hitting Preview, I noticed I had to make further edits. I pressed the "back" button in my browser, but nothing happened. I pressed it again thinking perhaps I had missed it, and still nothing happened. With long experience with web apps that cache intermediate changes, I continued clicking back.

Eventually the page did change, but it took me not back to the editor, but to the page before the one I had visited. That is, it did not take me back to the Sixel page I was modifying, but theDRCS page I had clicked through. I cannot tell if that's because I clicked too many times or not, but in any event, the lack of responce of the back button is generally bad. Doing so without stopping me to inform me I would be discarding my edits is very bad indeed.

Performing the edits and pressing Preview again, I noticed there is a button at the bottom of the screen called Review your changes. Why this is at the bottom of the screen and not the top beside Publish changes is lost on me (and I expect, every other user). In any event, I clicked that button which took me to a different screen, where I pressed the other "back button" in the upper left (which I only noticed because this form is more compact), which took me toanother screen, the original Publish changes. Pressing back on Review should take me to the last screen I used, not an entirely different one!

In any event, once I was back at the original Publish I could finally click the X button to go back to the editor to make more changes.

I tried another variation on File. This time the preview showed me a display that looked good, so in the preview screen I pressed Publish changes. This went ahead and did so without returning me to the publish form, so the edit went in without a change note.

Suggestion 1: The "stop whatever I'm doing and return to the editor button should be on every one of these forms, and should be clearly marked.

Suggestion 2: The Publish changes button on the sub-forms should put you in the Publish changes form, not just go ahead and publish it. The common workflow is that we are going to use preview to check whether we like it, make more changes, and repeat. When we see what we like we will publish. Since we are not going to enter the same change notes every time we want to do a preview, its likely there will be no notes unless we get one last chance.Maury Markowitz (talk)14:59, 26 January 2024 (UTC)Reply

Please stop mangling infoboxes

[edit]

VisualEditor has messed up hundreds or thousands of infoboxes in recent years. Please fix this problem.

I previously reported this at [[Wikipedia talk:VisualEditor]] in September 2023, but no one responded. At that time, I reverted the following 2 edits createded by VisualEditor.

If you are referring to the changes in indentation, then this is caused by the authors of infobox settlement defining a specific formatting to be followed by VE, so VE complies with that. —TheDJ (Not WMF) (talkcontribs)21:13, 4 February 2024 (UTC)Reply

Correcting links in tables in VE

[edit]

When editing Enrico Kolling (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Enrico_K%C3%B6lling) I made a mistake and accidentally linked the disambiguation page for Bernau. Not a problem. The problem comes when I tried to fix it. If I'm in VE, I can't correct links in this section (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Enrico_K%C3%B6lling#Professional_boxing_record).

I fixed it in wiki text but I'm wondering if there is a way in VE. ~Redfiona99 (talk)22:18, 20 February 2024 (UTC)Reply

Do you mean that, because they're wrapped using a template, you can only edit them as wikitext? If so, sadly that's a very long-known missing feature,T52355.Jdforrester (WMF) (talk)16:13, 21 February 2024 (UTC)Reply

Improving adding categories in VE

[edit]

I'm hoping adding categories could be improved in VisualEditor. Sometimes I copy and paste categories from somewhere else. I can't edit the name categories in VE though. eg. I paste "Australian companies established in 1997" and want to just change the year.

Secondly, I hoping the category search could be better. Right now I have to be very precise with what I type (different behaviour from adding a link to a article). I can't just type "Australian established 1997", I would have to type "Australian companies established in 199" to get a matching suggestion.Samuel Wiki (talk)06:25, 5 March 2024 (UTC)Reply

> I paste "Australian companies established in 1997" and want to just change the year.
I don't understand.. why can't you edit that ? There is no cursor in the text input to do so ?
> I have to be very precise
This is going to be a problem even with search. There are a LOT of categories, so even with search it is very likely you are going to get a lot of noise in your search results. It should be possible however to allow for at least typos, if VE would use prefix search instead of title prefix matching. I have filed a ticket for that inphab:T359302.
I've also been thinking that one of the problems with adding categories, is that you can not choose a higher or lower level categories from a match. It might be a good idea if you could navigate the tree from the Category input field. —TheDJ (Not WMF) (talkcontribs)10:40, 6 March 2024 (UTC)Reply
Thanks for creating that ticket.
Regarding the first point... actually the scenario where I encountered that issue was I copied the source of one article to use as a starting point for another article. But when I switch to VE, I can't edit the categories.
The point I was trying to make was once a category is entered, it cannot be edited in VE. It would be great if they were editable.Samuel Wiki (talk)11:48, 6 March 2024 (UTC)Reply
You can edit the categories in VE by going to the drop down menu at the top right (three horizontal lines) and choosing: Categories. Or simply by clicking the previewed categories. You can then remove incorrect categories and add new ones. —TheDJ (Not WMF) (talkcontribs)12:35, 6 March 2024 (UTC)Reply
Thinking about it again, I suspect that your problem is that when you are in the categories dialog, you don't want to have to type out from scratch the category name that you want ? This is why you speak of modifying (technically, there is no such thing, each category spelling exists and each of them is a valid category). I guess this would be helped if you could at least copy the text of the 'wrong' category name, but this is currently not possible in the dialog. —TheDJ (Not WMF) (talkcontribs)12:49, 6 March 2024 (UTC)Reply
Yeah, I was talking about the categories dialog and editing each individual category. It isn't very flexible at the moment. :/Samuel Wiki (talk)13:31, 6 March 2024 (UTC)Reply
I agree. I find it easier to switch into source mode to edit categories than to do it in VE. Or use HotCat and don't bother with any editor. When you are in the category-edit pop-up in VE, you see a category name with a down arrow to the right which currently takes you a popup with a textbox for the sort key. What if it took you to a popup with two textboxes, one with the category name as editable text and the other as the sortkey? That might be a solution for the VE users.Kerry Raymond (talk)04:28, 19 April 2024 (UTC)Reply

Ultimately it looks unfeasible for that wikitext hack to be made to work, as you're trying to push page-level meta-data through a template (which is incompatible with the future of templates, of course). Removal of new line at the end of comments in templates

[edit]

Visual editor is removing new line characters at the end of comments inside infobox templates. This is very disruptive. For examples see:

https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Santa_Maria,_California&curid=108140&diff=1233223778&oldid=1233174582https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Sunnyvale,_California&diff=next&oldid=1232524470

Comments such as "" serve as subheadings in templates helping editors by providing structure. The is modelled in the template here:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Template:Infobox_settlement

Visual editor is also reducing the number of spaces used to align the equal signs so that this ergonomically valuable alignment is disrupted.

Using Visual Editor on just a single section?

[edit]

One of the things that annoys me about VE is that you can't edit just a single section. Even if you click on the "edit" link next to an individual section heading, you still end up editing the entire page. I remember reading somewhere that due to the way VE parsed the page (or something like that), this was unavoidable.

But, I just noticed that onwikitech, it does work! Clicking the "edit" link next to a section head does indeed get you into VE looking at just that section. For example:https://wikitech.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=Help:Toolforge/My_first_Flask_OAuth_tool&veaction=edit&section=1. Wonderful! So, how does this work? Is there some option I need to enable? Or is wikitech running a newer version of VE and I just have to wait for it to get rolled out to enwiki?RoySmith (talk)17:05, 13 July 2024 (UTC)Reply

@RoySmith: That is an experimental feature that the Editing team rolled out to wikitech for testing. Not sure if they feel comfortable rolling it out to other wikis; it has some potential for confusion, and would likely need a lot of careful work before then, but I defer to them. :-)Jdforrester (WMF) (talk)21:41, 29 August 2024 (UTC)Reply

Stop the VisualEditor from creating duplicated references in the reference list

[edit]

When I copy a reference and paste it back in somewhere else, the reference list creates a new bullet list in the reference list, despite the reference already being there. This can quickly clutter the reference list, especially if placed more in the middle of an edited article.Sabelöga (talk)21:28, 28 August 2024 (UTC)Reply

If i check the full backtrace i are lost in the media-wiki sorce code space :-)

Visual Editor doesn't work with NYT, Times of Israel and Washington Post

[edit]

Hi all, if you add an URL of the New Yoirk Times, Times of Israel or Washington Post, the Visual Editor does not upload any pparameter suc as title, date if publication, author, website or acccess-date.79.51.125.37 (talk)21:43, 9 November 2024 (UTC)Reply

Unfortunately paywalls are increasingly causing such problems. There is not much that can be done against this I’ve been told. —TheDJ (Not WMF) (talkcontribs)22:38, 9 November 2024 (UTC)Reply

Disconnect between visual editor and source editor

[edit]

I added a blockquote, and as a result it merged the paragraph right under the blockquote with a separate paragraph right under that paragraph, with both showing them as together in visual editor, but in the source editing, they were shown as separate. Fixed it, but was recommended by an editor at the help desk to report it.
