Collection: Issues after Toolserver shutdown / Sammelstelle: Probleme nach Toolserver-Abschaltung
Hi! We would like to provide an overview for everyone and see which tools are most wanted and what is not working properly.
If you miss any tools or have noticed any broken redirects or any other error messages, please fill in below! The Toolserver was a community project and Wikimedia Deutschland cannot maintain volunteers' tools in the long run. But as many tools use free licenses, you could become the new maintainer. If you are a tool developer or if you want to become one, you can use the list of most-missed tools to get an idea where to get started. We can help you to contact the person who first wrote the tool and find out if he or she is still active or agrees to handing over the project. We will also check the broken redirects and other errors.
Please note that the backups of the tools will only be available until end of August 2014.
Thank you all for your help!
Hallo!
thank you for participating and for all your feedback! The good news are, that, among the tools which got named very often: Dispenser's tools are back in service, though he quit Tool Labs; Overlordq's Whois will hopefully be migrated by their maintainers; Luxo's derivative has found new maintainers. Also some other tools got fixed or will be migrated. Thanks, this is much appreciated!
What's next? Where can you help?
As mentioned below, Steinsplitter and Bawolff still are looking for someone who would like to help them out with Luxo's derivative.
VVV's adminstats got 9 votes, followed by Holek's citigen and Nikola's SVG translate. So if you are interested in maintaining a tool and you don't prefer a specific one, these could be the tools to get started with. We can help you to contact the current maintainers to find out about the whereabouts of their tools.
Not migrated, nobody working on it (3 or more mentions)
Please name the tool and, if possible, the name of the tool developer and the tool's old web address. Please add your signatures tovote until July 15th (IPs welcome).
Do not add the same tool more than once please! Just add your +1 if a tool has already been named! (as in "add your signature to vote...)
This tool seemed to work much better than most of the alternatives for quickly building citation references from arbitrary web pages.--ToddDTaft (talk)05:59, 5 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]
I and others get this message when trying to log in: "Login Internal Error. Wrong answer from the TUSC system, please notify User:Luxo on his talkpage. Error: t - string"FunkMonk (talk)13:10, 17 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Loss of Reflinks tool (partly moved up here from bottom of page)
It seems that Reflinks, previously hosted on Toolserver, isno longer functioning. Reflinks is a tool essential for our mission to provide citations and enhance verifiability. It simplifies the job of populating references, yet the developer feels that the WMF is forcing him to abandon the tool. It's exactly cases like these that makes me wonder where I should be asking questions about the whys and the wherefores. Not only that, I'mextremely disappointed and slightly angry that this has happened, and would like to appeal to the powers that be to reconsider. --Ohconfucius (talk)07:22, 1 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]
-1. Dispenser has told me on IRC that it is under a proprietary license (unusable on Labs), and seems unlikely to reconsider.πr2 (t •c)19:00, 1 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Support --User:SecretName101 I support bringing back reflinks, it was a useful tool that should not have been removed. Either, there should have been a proper replacement or no removal at all. Many new users have difficulty creating proper links, and this tool helped them immesurably, and even experienced users utilized it to save time correcting articles with innumerable references needing corrections.SecretName101 (talk) 16:35, 2 September 2014 (UTC)Support I frequently use reflinks while doingAfC reviewing. This is a really essential tool!Jodi.a.schneider (talk)13:54, 13 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Most recently (20–28 June) for many of the changes withinthis bunch of edits -- which took a fair amount of time, but much less than without checklinks. I'd only recently discovered checklinks and had been planning to continue, using checklinks to go through every article for which I was the major contributor. Toolserver.org sometimes seemed to be down. No big deal: I'd just wait till it was up again. (There were always plenty of other things to keep me busy in the meantime.) --Hoary (talk)13:31, 2 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Unfortunately, that just returns the numerical count rather than a list of the page titles, which is what WikiProjects used the Transcluded Pages tool for. ~~~~
It's apparently broken now, even thoughNemo_bis confirmed it worked before. Unfortunately I don't have access to fix it even though I asked erwin a while back. AFAIK none of the other maintainers are active...πr2 (t •c)17:44, 30 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
I have migrated that one. There is still a problem with it for commons, which I don't understand and hope to tackle later. Are you trying to use it for commons?Akoopal (talk)11:47, 1 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Akoopal, yes, I use it exclusively on Commons. If it is at all possible to get it working, you'll have my undying gratitude. I don't check this wiki often, but if you get it functioning, please ping me on Commons or En.wiki, I'll be happy to test and troubleshoot.Huntster (talk)01:39, 2 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Bawolff and Steinsplitter are working on luxo's tool (not yet working, but here:http://tools.wmflabs.org/derivative/). Steinsplitter wrote to me on IRC that help is needed for some security improvements. Her didn't go into detail though. Please contact Steinsplitter if you want to help.Silke WMDE (talk)10:10, 7 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]
+1 (even a simplified tool, i.e. limited to text composing for copy/paste to the base upload page, would be very appreciated. --Fulvio314 (talk)06:19, 10 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]
+1 It was very useful. Now I just upload as new files, because doing otherwise takes too much time... I agree that license violations are a bad thing though, so sometimes I quickly paste the URL to the original file.Nicolas1981 (talk)06:54, 15 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]
In progress merl is migrating. His tools are still working on Toolserver because he got in touch with WMDE about the amount of work needed for him to adapt the code for Tool Labs (incl. rewriting a formerly proprietary library). Partly, he was waiting for missing features in Tool Labs until very recently, too. So we agreed to give him just a bit more time to finish migration. (The same for OSM-related projects.)Silke WMDE (talk)08:45, 7 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]
+1 the overlordq whois CGI is linked from all anonymous Special:Contributions on en:, and is really useful. --Joy (talk)15:31, 3 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]
The autoblock finder tool link fromw:Special:Log/Block is still pointing to a toolserver 403 page. Has this tool been moved? I have struck the "done" tick for now as it appears that this tool is not working. The link certainly doesn't work. This tool is essential for admins. Without it it is next to impossible to unblock someone who has been caught in collateral damage from someone elses block.SpinningSpark09:57, 6 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]
The tool does not depend on any toolserver support. It only uses api.php. The code could be placed on any public webspace. --77.184.67.3618:04, 4 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Doesn't seem to be loading for me. I tried using my own username as well as several others.Ansh666 (talk) 04:48, 4 July 2014 (UTC) And, just as I save this edit, it loads. Thanks!...Ansh666 (talk)04:49, 4 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]
I use Adminstats frequently to check on the current concentration of Admin work -- i.e. seeing that 90% of the work is being done by 10 people or whatever. Commons uses it every six months to determine which Admins have made the required five edits to retain their Admin status. Is there a substitute?Jameslwoodward (talk)11:59, 7 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Schnark: I think so, but the tool you suggested shows "Notice: Undefined offset: 0 in /data/project/grep/public_html/index.php on line 33 An unexpected error occurred".Helder.wiki 11:07, 8 July 2014 (UTC)
Please name the tool and what kind of information you need withinAugust 20th.
Bitte benenne das Tool und welche Informationen Du darüber haben möchtest (bis 20.8.).
I'm interested in helping migrate an abandoned tool to Tool Labs. I don't particularly care which tool -- happy to work on the one most needed / most abandoned. I'll need access to the source code, any data files, crontab entries, etc.Ijon (talk)20:22, 30 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
HeyIjon andπr2! Thanks again for your offer! As you see above, luxo's tool is missed by lots of people. There are Steinsplitter and Bawolff who started to migrate it. Steinsplitter would appreciate help with security questions. (But didn't go into detail, yet.) Does one of you want to support him to get luxo's tool up and running? Best,Silke WMDE (talk)09:36, 9 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]
I don't know why he won't work with the WMF on it, from what some of there people are saying they are willing to work with him. Someone needs to come up with a similar tool to DabSolver & Reflinks if he is unwilling to work with the WMF. We need high quality tools like these.Blethering Scot (talk)20:42, 1 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]
second that. This needs to capture all files at those paths as well (especially toolserver.org/~dschwen/wma/iframe.html → //wma.wmflabs.org/iframe.html) --Dschwen (talk)15:32, 1 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Can someone pleaseupdateToolserver's main page to reflect that the site has been shut down (instead of will be shut down) and add a link to this discussion for people to be able to request tool migrations and note bugs with redirects or whatnot? Thanks.Technical 13 (talk)14:58, 1 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]
With the closure of toolserver, we were left without a WHOIS tool (only days after I replaced the previous, "account-expired" tool). There's dozens of tools at thewmflabs page, none is labeled clearly as "Whois" and I don't have time to check each and everyone of them. Which is the whois tool we could use for the "WHOIS" option at the bottom of the IP contributions page? Also, to whom it may concern: please consider maintaining some basic tools, like whois, global contribs, edit count etcetera,by WMF's developers as an integral/centralized part of the wiki sites function, to avoid having to look for these tools, especially in hours of need, again and again every time a developer account expires. Thanks -Badseed (talk)23:10, 1 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Tried to contact overlordq about his/her missing tools. No answer yet though. Whois is licensed under GPLv3, so anyone could resurrect the tool.Silke WMDE (talk)09:31, 2 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]
This needs fixing as a matter of urgency. It is not just a tool in the toolbox of a few experienced editors. It is linked on the talk page and the history page of every single IP editor and they are all returning a 403 error. This is not quite as broken as the site could get but it is a pretty poor situation. I don't think the Foundation developers should be sitting around on their thumbs hoping that some volunteer will pick this up.SpinningSpark16:39, 2 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]
The link was added by the admins of some wikis, and they can remove it just as easily. It is not there by default.πr2 (t •c)17:48, 2 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]
I know that, but removing the link to the tool and pretending it never existed is not really any kind of solution. The transfer of tools from Toolserver has been completely botched, relying entirely on the efforts of individual volunteers to get it done. There is stuff broken all over the wiki. This is not the only highly visible breakage; most of the tools in the RfA menu have stopped working.SpinningSpark09:47, 3 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]
OverlordQ got back to us by now. He wrote in an email that he hasn't had time to migrate, yet, but he's got his backup and will hopefully set it up on Tool Labs soon.Silke WMDE (talk)08:54, 7 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]
The author claimed on en.wiki that it's relevant and it says "last update: 2014-07-02 13:08:44. UTC", maybe it was repurposed. But yes, not quite clear. --Nemo06:40, 12 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]
