‘Mufasa’ Roars to Top of Disc Sales Chart

Disney’sMufasa: The Lion King debuted at No. 1 on the Circana VideoScan sales chart, which tracks combined DVD and Blu-ray Disc unit sales, and the dedicated Blu-ray Disc sales chart the week ended April 5.
The prequel to 2019’sThe Lion King tells the story of how Mufasa came to become king of the Pridelands, alienating his adoptive brother Scar. The film has earned $254.6 million at the domestic box office.
With 74% the sales total of the top title, No. 2 on the overall sales chart and No. 3 on the Blu-ray chart was Lionsgate’sFlight Risk. The thriller is directed by Mel Gibson and stars Mark Wahlberg as a pilot transporting an Air Marshal (Michelle Dockery) accompanying a witness (Topher Grace) for a mob trial. As they cross the Alaskan wilderness, tensions soar and trust is tested, as not everyone on board is who they seem. The film has earned $29.8 million at U.S. theaters.
The No. 3 overall disc seller, and No. 4 on the Blu-ray chart, was Universal Pictures’Dog Man. The DreamWorks Animation film adapts the Dav Pilkey books about a police dog and his human police officer partner who are fused together into a new superhero after being injured on the job. The film earned $97.9 million at the domestic box office.
The top seller the previous two weeks, Disney’sMoana 2, dropped to No. 4 on the overall disc sales chart and No. 6 on the Blu-ray chart.
Rounding out the top five overall sellers chart was another newcomer, Disney-owned Searchlight Pictures’A Complete Unknown. The biopic stars Timothée Chalamet as Bob Dylan and tracks the singer-songwriter’s industry-transforming rise in the early 1960s. The film earned $75 million at the domestic box office.
Other newcomers in the overall top 20 included Universal’s action comedyLove Hurts (No. 7 overall, No. 8 on the Blu-ray chart), Toho’s anime movieMy Hero Academia: You’re Next (No. 8 overall, No. 5 Blu-ray), Warner’sCompanion (No. 9 on both the overall and Blu-ray charts), and the Sony Pictures comedyOne of Them Days (No. 15 overall).

HD formats accounted for 46% of total unit sales ofMufasa, with 37% from regular Blu-ray and 9% from a 4K Steelbook combo pack, which seems to have become Disney’s preferred way of distributing UHD discs of its family titles. As a result,Mufasa was only No. 6 on the dedicated 4K disc sales chart.
The top 4K disc seller wasA Complete Unknown, which was only available on disc in HD editions. It had 29% of its sales come from the 4K/Blu-ray combo pack edition, compared with 71% for the standalone Blu-ray.
ForCompanion, 62% of its sales were from Blu-ray formats, with 16% from regular Blu-ray and 46% from 4K disc. It was No. 2 on the 4K chart.
Flight Risk had 46% of its sales from HD formats, with 32% from regular Blu-ray and 14% from 4K disc. It was No. 4 on the 4K chart.
