Bucks-bred Charlie Saxton rocks in ‘Bandslam’
Bucks County native Charlie Saxton only spent a couple of days in Allentown shooting the 2005 baseball flick “Rounding First,” but his memories are tasty ones.
Cast as a bully who terrorizes the three central characters (played by Soren Fulton, Sam Samenza, Matt Borish), Saxton recalls a day at Yocco’s on Hamilton Boulevard.
“The chefs didn’t have a lot of stuff prepared so we only had the pierogies,” says the Bristol, Bucks County, native by phone from his Los Angeles apartment. “But those pierogies were awesome.”
After “Rounding First,” Saxton, 19, began hitting home runs, snagging roles in M. Night Shyamalan’s “The Happening,” voicing the central character in the 2006 video game “Bully,” appearing alongside Ashley Judd in a Broadway revival of “Cat on a Hot Tin Roof” and playing a murder suspect in Peter Jackson’s “The Lovely Bones” (due in December).
Beginning Friday, Saxton can be seen in “Bandslam,” a musical about the adventures of an edgy high school band that morphs from a garage-rock trio into a nine-piece, Arcade Fire-style outfit (Saxton, Alyson Michalka, Vanessa Hudgens), complete with horns, cello and keyboards.
Shot in Austin, Texas, and nourished by that city’s indie-rock scene, “Bandslam” was “a life-changing” experience for Saxton.
“It’s funny and sad and it rocks,” the actor says. “It’s got cute girls and guitars. What more do you want?”
On set, Saxton made a point to meet the cameo-ing David Bowie, whose musical spirit infuses the film. “He tried to have an actual conversation with me but I was so [starstuck] that I just stood there,” Saxton recalls. “Finally, he stopped talking and pinched my cheek and went, “You have such a cute face, Charlie.’ “
Saxton is something of an accidental actor. Years ago, he was tagging along with his older sister to meetings with agents when the Philly-based talent manager Edie Robb spotted him and decided he should be in front of the camera, too.
Last fall, Saxton was preparing to take a break from performing and attend Indiana University when he snagged a regular gig on HBO’s “Hung,” and a leading role in Joel Schumacher’s “12,” a movie about snobby rich kids starring “Gossip Girl’s” Chace Crawford.
Saxton closed the deal to be represented by monster talent agency CAA (Tom Hanks, Tom Cruise and Justin Timberlake) the night of his Bristol High prom.
The one downside to being a success story? Saxton’s so busy he’s forgotten how to drive. “I got my license the day before I left for Austin to do “Bandslam’ and I haven’t been behind the wheel ever since.”
