History[edit]

Super Mario series[edit]

New Super Mario Bros. Wii[edit]

Princess Peach about to be kidnapped in the intro cutscene of New Super Mario Bros. Wii
Everyone witnesses the Koopalings bring in a huge birthday cake.

Yellow Toad and Blue Toad first appear as, respectively, the third and fourth playable characters inNew Super Mario Bros. Wii. They attendPrincess Peach's birthday party along with Mario and Luigi, but the party is interrupted by theKoopalings andBowser Jr. disguised as a large birthdaycake in order to kidnap the princess. The four venture through eight differentworlds, stoppingBowser andhis minions and saving Peach. After Bowser is defeated and the princess is saved, the two Toads go on a hot air balloon, and they soon invite Luigi to join their balloon after his balloon leaves with Mario and Peach onboard.

Yellow Toad and Blue Toad are the first new characters to use power-ups such as theFire Flower in aSuper Mario game sinceWario inSuper Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins.

New Super Mario Bros. U /New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe[edit]

Yellow Toad and Blue Toad with Mario and Luigi inNew Super Mario Bros. U

Yellow Toad and Blue Toad make their next appearance inNew Super Mario Bros. U. They regain their role as two of the main protagonists of the game along with Mario, Luigi, andMiis. As of this game, their voice lines are swapped with each other when compared toNew Super Mario Bros. Wii.

Within the game's introduction sequence, the Toads are seen with the Mario Bros. and Princess Peach attending a lunch atPeach's Castle. However, their peaceful get-together is soon ruined by the sudden appearance of multiple airships consisting of Bowser and the Koopalings. Using a giant mechanical arm (which extended itself from Bowser's airship into the main hall of Peach's Castle where the heroes were taking their lunch), Bowser pulled away Peach's chair from harm and instead gave a mighty punch at the heroes and causing them to be knocked out.

Seizing the opportunity, Bowser used the mechanical arm to scoop up Yellow Toad, Blue Toad, and their friends and threw the heroes far across the Mushroom Kingdom. Upon crashing into theAcorn Tree consisting ofSuper Acorns and falling back to the ground (with Blue Toad going as far as sliding on his large mushroom head from the force), the four heroes soon get up and see Peach's Castle getting invaded by Bowser's forces in the far distance. Deciding to take action, Blue Toad and his friends run across the plains in the start of a new adventure.

Yellow Toad and Blue Toad return as playable characters within the multiplayer mode of the expansion pack gameNew Super Luigi U. Very much like inNew Super Mario Bros. U, the two journey through the Mushroom Kingdom to save Princess Peach once again along with the help of Luigi, andNabbit. While they play similarly as inNew Super Mario Bros. U, Yellow Toad and Blue Toad are able to perform ascuttle jump much like Luigi and the other playable characters.

InNew Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe, Yellow Toad and Blue Toad share one character slot under the generic identifier of "Toad," and the two can be switched between on the character select screen by holding theL Button orZL Button button (SL Button button when playing with a single Joy-Con).

Super Mario 3D World /Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury[edit]

Toad inSuper Mario 3D World

While neither Yellow Toad nor Blue Toad appears inSuper Mario 3D World and itsNintendo Switch port,Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury,Toad appears instead with the same appearance as of Blue Toad, reflecting his in-game appearance inSuper Mario Bros. 2. In the game's electronic manual, however, Blue Toad's artwork fromNew Super Mario Bros. Wii was reused to represent Toad.[2] Additionally, when Toad grabs a Fire Flower, he uses the same color scheme as Fire Yellow Toad.

Super Mario Maker 2[edit]

Like inSuper Mario 3D World, Toad appears as a playable character inSuper Mario Maker 2 with an identical appearance to Blue Toad. During Co-Op and Versus Modes, as well as in "Play Together" mode, Toad is the third-player character. In theNew Super Mario Bros. U game style, Toad's voice lines are a mix between Yellow and Blue Toad's voice lines in previous games. The color scheme of his fire form in theSuper Mario 3D World style has been changed to look like Fire Blue Toad instead of Fire Yellow Toad.

Super Mario Bros. Wonder[edit]

Flower Kingdom from the August 31, 2023 Nintendo Direct

Yellow Toad and Blue Toad appear as two of the playable characters inSuper Mario Bros. Wonder, this time being separate characters who can both appear together in multiplayer mode, unlikeNew Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe.[3] Like previously, both Toads share the same attributes as other characters besides theYoshis andNabbit, but they each have distinct jumping sounds.

They are first seen in the opening accompanying Princess Peach riding onYoshi in their visit to theFlower Kingdom. When Bowser appears, along withBowser Jr. andKamek, and fuses with Florian's castle to becomeCastle Bowser, Yellow Toad tries to protect Peach while Blue Toad appears frightened and cowering much like Luigi. However, both of them join their friends in their journey to collect allRoyal Seeds and defeat Bowser.

Super Mario-kun[edit]

Yellow Toad and Blue Toad, who are brothers in this adaptation, first appear in volume 41 ofSuper Mario-kun. In the first chapter ofNew Super Mario Bros. Wii, the two Toads help Mario, Luigi, and Yoshi defeatLarry. Afterwards, with permission from their mother, they join the heroes on their quest to rescue Princess Peach.

In terms of roles and personality, the two are much likeToad: brave, smart, helpful, resourceful, and usually do not act as comic relief and are not affected by slapstick like Mario. Unlike in the games, they are portrayed as children who admire Mario.

Nintendo 3DS[edit]

Yellow Toad, Blue Toad, and the otherNew Super Mario Bros. Wii heroes were shown as some of the featured characters in theNintendo 3DS tech demo. Yellow Toad and Blue Toad were shown wearing thePropeller Suit in the demo as like in the original game's box art.[citation needed] The Nintendo 3DS tech demo screen ofNew Super Mario Bros. Wii (featuring the Toads and their friends) is later an obtainable puzzle in the Puzzle Swap mode ofStreetPass Mii Plaza.

New Super Mario Bros. Mii[edit]

The Toads, along with Mario, Luigi, andMiis, are also seen as playable characters in theWii U tech demoNew Super Mario Bros. Mii.

Wii make cameo appearances in the Wii gameTaiko no Tatsujin Wii: Minna de Party Sandaime, where the characters can be seen dancing to the various tracks featured inNew Super Mario Bros. Wii.

Possible appearances[edit]

Super Mario 3D Land[edit]

Letter look.

InSuper Mario 3D Land, Mario is joined by three Toads on his adventure, including a yellow Toad and a blue Toad.

After finishing World 8-Bowser's Castle2 a second time, the player will unlock a photo withTanooki Peach and a pair of yellow and blue Tanooki Toads.

Luigi's Mansion 3[edit]

Yellow Toad and Blue Toad in Luigi's Mansion 3

Luigi's Mansion 3 features an unnamed yellow Toad and a blue Toad referred to as Blue Toad (along with the mainToad character) accompany Princess Peach on her trip toThe Last Resort. Their role as Peach's Toad companions is typically filled by the playable duo fromNew Super Mario Bros. Wii, though it is unconfirmed if the pair of Toads seen inLuigi's Mansion 3 is the same.

The Super Mario Bros. Movie[edit]

Two Toad soldiers, one blue and the other yellow, guarding Peach's Castle.

InThe Super Mario Bros. Movie, whenMario and Toad attempt to enter Princess Peach's Castle they are stopped by two Toad guards, one yellow and one blue. Given their coloration, occupation, and the spotlight put on them in contrast with the other Toad guards, it is possible that they are at least references to Yellow Toad and Blue Toad respectively. One of the Toad guards is voiced byCarlos Alazraqui.[4]

General information[edit]

Personality[edit]

Screenshot of Yellow Toad and Blue Toad in th intro of Super Mario Bros. Wonder
The Toads in the opening ofSuper Mario Bros. Wonder

In all of their appearances, Yellow Toad and Blue Toad are shown to be noble characters, who are able to venture alongside the Mario Bros. on their dangerous mission to savePrincess Peach from Bowser and his minions; a force that most Toads tend to be afraid of. They are also shown to be kind and compassionate as seen in the ending ofNew Super Mario Bros. Wii where they happily invite Luigi to ride in their hot air balloon after he had been abandoned (albeit by accident) by Mario and Peach. In the introduction ofNew Super Mario Bros. U, Blue Toad is shown to be even more finicky than his partner Yellow Toad as he is seen to be in an extreme alarm when Bowser's mechanical arm pulled away the Princess.

Super Mario Bros. Wonder is the first time that their personalities are clearly differentiated in a game. As seen in the opening, Yellow Toad is shown to be the more courageous of the two, immediately jumping in front of Princess Peach to try and protect her from Bowser, while Blue Toad crouches in fear similarly to howLuigi would.

Speech[edit]

InNew Super Mario Bros. Wii, Yellow Toad has a higher-pitched voice that is very much like the voice that theYellow Toad of theToad Brigade had inSuper Mario Galaxy, who also sounded higher pitched in comparison to the other Toads in the game, while Blue Toad has a lower-pitched voice. However, inNew Super Mario Bros. U, the voices of Yellow Toad and Blue Toad were changed, with Yellow Toad having a lower-pitched voice and Blue Toad having a higher-pitched voice. This was switched again inSuper Mario Bros. Wonder.

Abilities[edit]

Throughout their playable appearances, the Toads play similarly to Mario. While possessing the samejumps as Mario, they are also shown to use similar techniques as well including theWall Jump andGround Pound. They are also able to maximize his jumps by using aSpin Jump. Unlike the Mario Bros. however, Yellow Toad and Blue Toad are shown to have a unique triple jump; the two Toads perform a high jump similar to a cartwheel while facing one side of the screen. The Toads are also shown to be quite strong, being able to carry items much larger than his own size (such asbarrels). They are also capable of picking up, carrying and throwing other characters (such as Mario) with ease. All of these traits are similar to not give players advantages over each other. InNew Super Luigi U, they have the ability to perform a scuttle jump much like Luigi.

Yellow Toad and Blue Toad are also capable of using the various power-ups in the game allowing them to use their special effects and achieve different forms (such asPropeller Blue Toad and Propeller Yellow Toad if they were to touch aPropeller Mushroom). Much like the other characters playable inNew Super Mario Bros. Wii, they are shown to be skilled in ridingYoshis.
