- “Wow! Can ya believe it?! This must be that strange, legendaryworld we've been hearing rumors about! There are even morePower Stars around here! So! Let's go get 'em,Captain!”
- —Lubba,Super Mario Galaxy 2
World S, also known asSpecial World,[1] is the seventh and last world featured inSuper Mario Galaxy 2 and itsNintendo Switchport. It is located high in the sky of an unknown planet with colorful star-shaped islands, and has two rainbows in the background. This world is shaped like an "S", hinting at its name, and has no forked directions. It holds a total of seven galaxies, the last of which, theGrandmaster Galaxy, can only be accessed by collecting all 120Power Stars as well as all 120Green Stars. With the exception ofMario Squared Galaxy, every gallery is blocked by aStar Barrier (the most out of all worlds) that requires a certain number of Power Stars to unlock rather than simply completion of the previous galaxy. The world is unlocked after the player completesBowser's Fortified Fortress for the first time. This is the only world in the game to lack any Hidden Stars, with each galaxy featuring one main mission, onePrankster Comet (with all types except for the Romp Comet present and also the most comets out of all worlds), and (excluding the Grandmaster Galaxy) twoGreen Stars.
This world's appearance is hinted at by aBob-omb Buddy brought back from theThrowback Galaxy, who asks about the "strange, legendary world" in a manner similar to Lubba's. This world's music is a slower rendition of "Gusty Garden Galaxy" and "Overture" fromSuper Mario Galaxy.
All of the galaxies in this world except forFlip-Out Galaxy are references to previousSuper Mario games.Mario Squared Galaxy,Stone Cyclone Galaxy,Boss Blitz Galaxy andGrandmaster Galaxy (in the case of The Perfect Run, because of the music) are references toSuper Mario Galaxy,Rolling Coaster Galaxy is a reference to theRainbow Road courses from theMario Kart series andSuper Mario 64 (because of the music), andTwisty Trials Galaxy is a reference to "The Secret of Ricco Tower" fromRicco Harbor inSuper Mario Sunshine.
Galaxies[edit]
| # | Image | Galaxy | Description | Stars | Unlocking criterion |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Mario Squared Galaxy | This galaxy takes place on an 8-bitMario, which also appeared as a planet in theToy Time Galaxy from thefirst game. However, the spinning platforms have been replaced with Flipswitch Panels. An 8-bitLuigi appears on the opposite side and serves as aPurple Coin level. | DefeatBowser inBowser's Fortified Fortress. | ||
| 2 | Rolling Coaster Galaxy | This galaxy is similar to a roller coaster and, similar toRolling Masterpiece Galaxy,Mario (orLuigi) must roll aStar Ball to the end. Also, manyStarshrooms appear along the way. | Collect 75 Stars, including the first one from Mario Squared Galaxy. | ||
| 3 | Twisty Trials Galaxy | This galaxy is heavily based on the Episode 4 missionThe Secret of Ricco Tower fromRicco Harbor inSuper Mario Sunshine. The only major changes are that there is now a singleCloud Flower in the first mission,Yoshi in the second, and some of the spinning logs are larger. | Collect 80 Stars, including the first one from Rolling Coaster Galaxy. | ||
| 4 | Stone Cyclone Galaxy | This galaxy consists of only one planet, which is essentially a replica of theCyclone Stone from theBeach Bowl Galaxy inSuper Mario Galaxy. Some differences include the addition ofOctoombas, the removal of the lastThwomp, and the addition of multipleblue switches at different intervals around the planet. | Collect 90 Stars, including the first one from Twisty Trials Galaxy. | ||
| 5 | Boss Blitz Galaxy | This galaxy pits the player against five bosses from the first game (for a total of ten boss fights including the Prankster Comet mission, the most out of any world). The player faces off againstDino Piranha,King Kaliente,Major Burrows,Bouldergeist andFiery Dino Piranha, in that specific order. It contains six planets surrounding awhite dwarf star. | Collect 100 Stars, including the first one from Stone Cyclone Galaxy. | ||
| 6 | Flip-Out Galaxy | This the final galaxy unlocked before the player obtains 240 Power Stars. The galaxy uses the same concept as theFlip-Swap Galaxy fromWorld 1, except that instead of controllingRed-Blue Panels, the player controlsred and blue blocks. In this regard, it combines the mechanics of the Flip-Swap Galaxy withWall Jumping. | Get 110 Stars, including the first one from Boss Blitz Galaxy, then feed theHungry Luma on the World S map 2000Star Bits. | ||
| 7 | Grandmaster Galaxy | This galaxy is analogous to theGrand Finale Galaxy fromSuper Mario Galaxy because the player must collect all 240Power Stars andGreen Stars to unlock it. This is the only Galaxy where Green Stars do not appear because the player has to collect all of the Green Stars in the game in order to unlock this galaxy. | Collect the 240 Stars and Green Stars, excludingBronze Stars. |

- None of the galaxies in this world has ateleporter that leads to a Bonus Planet.
- During the introduction cutscene, Mario can be found as a little dot right next to the Boss Blitz Galaxy.
