TheWing Cap, orWinged Cap,[1][2] is an item found inSuper Mario 64. It isMario's signature power-up inSuper Mario 64, being shown on the game's box art and a majority of itsmerchandise.
History[edit]
Super Mario 64 /Super Mario 64 DS[edit]
InSuper Mario 64, when wearing a Wing Cap, Mario becomesWing Mario and gains the ability tofly and slow his falls (when the player holds
), like with theSuper Leaf andCape Feather from previous games. Mario can begin flying by performing aTriple Jump (which can be done in place in that form) or by getting shot from acannon. The Wing Cap can be obtained only from ared block, which becomes solid upon Mario hitting theWing Cap Switch in theTower of the Wing Cap course. The wings last for a minute before wearing off. Other than the Tower of the Wing Cap andWing Mario Over the Rainbow, the Wing Cap appears in three courses: theBob-omb Battlefield,Lethal Lava Land, andShifting Sand Land. There is also a red block on the roof of theMushroom Castle, and when allPower Stars are collected, the nearby cannon is unlocked, allowing the player character to blast onto the roof.
While Wing Mario returns inSuper Mario 64 DS, the original Wing Cap is replaced by a white feather (with both the form and the item referred to asWings in English, although instances of "Wing cap" remain in-game) that only Mario can use, which can drop from red blocks.
Mario Party[edit]
Mario can be seen wearing the Wing Cap on one ofMario Party's title screens, where he is shown flying through the air inMario's Rainbow Castle.
Minecraft[edit]
In the Super Mario Mash-Up Pack inMinecraft, the original game's feather is replaced by one of the wings to the Wing Cap.
Other appearances[edit]
In both versions ofNintendo Monopoly, there is aCoin Block/Brick Block card that reads "Purchase a Wing Cap - Pay $50."

The theme "Powerful Mario" also plays when Mario rides on aKoopa Shell or becomesVanish Mario. Also, in theNintendo DS remake, a slower-paced version plays whenHoot is carrying Mario, and a different slower-paced version plays when Mario turns intoBalloon Mario after obtaining aPower Flower.
This theme is a cover of the music heard inSuper Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island, called "Powerful Infant," whenBaby Mario transforms intoSuperstar Mario, as well as the music played in certain bonus rooms in said game. "Powerful Infant" is in turn a cover of "Invincibility BGM" that plays when Mario acquires aSuper Star in the originalSuper Mario Bros. but with an added countermelody. This theme was reused inNew Super Mario Bros. as the invincibility theme, and it was later rearranged forSuper Mario Galaxy andSuper Mario Galaxy 2 for the equivalentRainbow Star power-up.
