Whomps are a species related toThwomps that debuted inSuper Mario 64. They are large enemies that resemble rectangular stone slabs with snaggletoothed faces, simple hands and arms, and legless feet. They are commonly seen asminions ofBowser and theWhomp King, though some Whomps in theMario Party series are shown to be independent. They attempt to crushMario by falling over and trying to land on top of him when he gets near. They can be defeated by Mario causing them to fall over and subsequentlyground-pounding on their sole weak spot, their back, which is marked by a cracked area with usually a bandage, or a Ground Pound symbol in a few other games. In their initial appearance, the Whomps and Thwomps share the same voice clip. In later games, Whomps are given a unique voice.

They are inspired by the Japanese mythological creature known as thenurikabe.^[1] The nurikabe is a sentient wall that blocks the way of travelers, which Whomps do as well in theMario Party series, on boards such asDK's Jungle Adventure, andKing Boo's Haunted Hideaway.

Super Mario series[edit]

Super Mario 64 /Super Mario 64 DS[edit]

Whomps, also namedWhomp Lieutenants,^[2]Slab Beasts^[3] orSmall Whomps,^[4] appear inSuper Mario 64 as enemies only inWhomp's Fortress alongside their leader, theWhomp King. Whomps will patrol back and forth in a small area, attempting to slam Mario into the ground for three damage when he gets near. Atrick in the original version only allows Mario to pass through one and get on its back if hejumps while it falls. Landing on the back of a Whomp will release acoin up to five times, whilePounding the Ground on a Whomp while it lays flat will defeat it, which releases five coins.

InSuper Mario 64 DS, Whomps were redesigned with a bit of a smoother rocky texture, bodies being rougher and rounder along the edges, and their hands matching their body's color and being rectangular with a thumb instead of purple and spherical. Finally, besidesPounding the Ground, Whomps can be defeated from the effects of amushroom instead.

New Super Mario Bros.[edit]

Three Whomps appear as enemies inNew Super Mario Bros. All of them are encountered inWorld 3-Castle only. They stand still in the background, waiting for the player to approach, before attempting to crush them. A Whomp now releases four coins when Ground Pounded. They can also be used as platforms to cross harmful parts of the environment, likespikes. One Whomp allows the player character to obtain the secondStar Coin. There is oneBig Whomp, which differs not only by size but also from walking around, though the strategy guide does not differentiate it from other Whomps.^{[citation needed]}

Super Mario Galaxy 2[edit]

Whomps receive a redesign inSuper Mario Galaxy 2 and itsNintendo Switch port, with more rectangular body features, smoother textures, and a removal of their unfocused eye design. They also now have aGround Pound symbol on their back, replacing the bandage from their original design.

Upon noticing Mario (orLuigi), Whomps move after him quickly before stopping, shaking, and then slamming down. Whomps can defeat Mario instantly by crushing him, unlike before. They can be defeated by Ground Pounding its back, causing it to releaseStar Bits. As they are fully solid, they can be stood on andWall Jumped off of; this is required to obtainBowser's Lava Lair'sComet Medal.

Whomps appear in all missions of Bowser's Lava Lair andBowser's Gravity Gauntlet, as well asThrowback Galaxy'sfirst mission. There, a large Whomp appears at the top of the fortress, and defeating it is required to encounter the Whomp King. In its battle, the Whomp King summonsWhimps, a smaller Whomp variant debuting inSuper Mario Galaxy 2.

New Super Mario Bros. 2[edit]

Whomps return with Big Whomps inNew Super Mario Bros. 2, using their design fromSuper Mario Galaxy 2. They are encountered inWorld Mushroom-Castle andWorld Star-3 only. Whomps are either in the background or walk around, and likewise with Big Whomps. A Whomp releases only one coin when defeated.

Mario Party series[edit]

Mario Party[edit]

Whomps guard some junctions inDK's Jungle Adventure inMario Party. There are three Whomps, and paying them ten Coins is required to pass. If a player chooses the route not guarded by a Whomp, it begins to block the route instead.

Mario Party 2[edit]

Whomps appear on several boards inMario Party 2. The Whomps inHorror Land guard junctions, like inMario Party, although they cannot move during the night. InSpace Land, ifSnifit Patrol is on duty, a Whomp chases the player instead of a Thwomp.Mystery Land features a Whomp without arms or legs. A Whomp may appear at the start of the last five turns, always predictingMario to become the Super Star. A Whomp appears in one minigame,Day at the Races.

Mario Party 3[edit]

Whomps appear inMario Party 3. In Duel Mode, they areDonkey Kong's initial partner; it has four health; no attack power; and a salary of three coins per turn. If the player receives a second Whomp as a partner while one is still active, the Millennium Star decreases their salaries by one instead of raising their attack (as is typical of other partners). They're the only partners who can't attack. Three Whomps appear in theCreepy Cavern board, next to theWhomp King, where they appear to be playing aMario Party-themed board game based onRules Land fromMario Party 2.

Mario Party 4[edit]

A Whomp co-hosts the Extra Room with a Thwomp inMario Party 4. Whomps function as dominoes in the minigameDomination.

Mario Party 5[edit]

Whomps are background characters in various minigames ofMario Party 5, such asRandom Ride. On thePirate Dream board, Whomps allow players to use aladder as a shortcut for ten coins.

Mario Party 6[edit]

Two Whomps have a role of blocking a path on a board inMario Party 6, appearing inSnowflake Lake andFaire Square, respectively. Both Whomps charge the player ten coins to pass. Whomps also appear alongside Thwomps as obstacles inTricky Tires.

Mario Party Advance[edit]

InMario Party Advance, Whomp appears inShroom City as a duelist. Whomp is fought on the first floor ofDuel Tower, where he leaps down to afterMouser talks to the player briefly. Whomp challenges the player to a duel, allowing the player to continue to the next floor if they win. After losing inStair Scare, Whomp admits to underestimating the player's strength, and he allows them to continue to the second floor. The epilogue reveals that Whomp had befriendedThwomp and moved into hishouse with him.

Whomps also appear in some minigames, such asOn the Spot andOutta My Way.

Mario Party 7[edit]

The Whomps inMario Party 7 use their design fromSuper Mario 64 DS. One of them is an obstacle on the boardPyramid Park, blocking the path to the Bowser Sphinx unless the player pays them ten coins. Whomps are also obstructions in theSphere Factor, and one of the pictures to form inSpin Off.

Mario Party 8[edit]

Whomps appear in the boardKing Boo's Haunted Hideaway inMario Party 8, and another also appears in the minigamesMoped Mayhem andSpecter Inspector. In thePrima Games guide ofMario Party 8, the author mistakenly refers to Whomp as aThwomp.^{[citation needed]}

Mario Party DS[edit]

Whomps are featured in the minigamesWhomp-a-thon andToppling Terror inMario Party DS. A plush in its likeness also appears inPlush Crush.

Mario Party 9[edit]

A Whomp is one of the bosses inMario Party 9, using its design fromSuper Mario Galaxy 2. Whomp appears inBob-omb Factory in Solo Mode, and its boss minigame isWhomp Stomp.

Mario Party: Island Tour[edit]

A Whomp appears inMario Party: Island Tour, receiving a redesign once again that consolidates the designs fromSuper Mario 64 DS andSuper Mario Galaxy 2, and is the final obstruction of thePerilous Palace Path board. To win, the player has to take a chance at rolling aDice Block, which depletes its health. If the Whomp is not damaged enough, it squashes the player. A Whomp appears in the minigameKa-Goomba! after some time, and by defeating it, the player wins.

Mario Party 10[edit]

A Whomp blocks the path in front of the middle castle during Bowser Party inMario Party 10. The Whomp can be defeated after six hits, allowing players to continue.

Mario Party: The Top 100[edit]

Whomps reappear inMario Party: The Top 100 in the minigame Sphere Factor fromMario Party 7, serving the same role as they did in the original.

Super Mario Party[edit]

Whomps are non-playable characters on theWhomp's Domino Ruins board inSuper Mario Party. They move around periodically, blocking paths, but players can make them move by paying a coin toll. Whomps can also appear as obstacles inFollow the Money, as well as one alongside aThwomp and aSumo Bro inRattle and Hmmm. Whomp has a few lines of unique dialogue forBowser andBowser Jr.:

I hate to do this to you, but I need [#] coins.
You're free to pass! Sorry for the holdup!
I wish I could let it slide… But you can't enter without the coins!
The thing is I need coins. I know, I know…

Mario Party Superstars[edit]

InMario Party Superstars, Whomps retain their roles in both theHorror Land andSpace Land boards fromMario Party 2.

Super Mario Party Jamboree[edit]

Whomps reappear inSuper Mario Party Jamboree in the returningDomination minigame fromMario Party 4, with an updated design. Whomps also appear in the minigameMatch Makers. There is a Whomp in the Thrift Store event inRainbow Galleria, which will forcibly buy one of the items from the player. A Whomp can sometimes appear alongside aSnifit during the Runaway race cars event inRoll 'em Raceway. Artwork of Whomps can also appear on the balls ridden byToads in the minigameBig-Top Quiz.

During Party-Planner Trek, a Whomp blocks one of the paths inGoomba Lagoon. If the player wins the Domination minigame, the Whomp will move and open the path.

Mario Golf series[edit]

Whomps make two physical appearances in theMario Golf series. InMario Golf: Toadstool Tour, Whomps appear in Hole 16 and 17 ofBowser Badlands, where if they squish the golf ball, the player is given a penalty stroke. Whomps behave identically toThwomps, except Whomps disappear after falling. InMario Golf: Super Rush, Whomps are an obstacle in Battle Golf and theBowser Highlands course, serving as barriers for both balls and players.

InMario Golf: World Tour, Whomp is one of the names that can be seen on the tournament scoreboard.

Paper Mario: Sticker Star[edit]

A single Whomp appears during the second phase of the final battle withBowser inPaper Mario: Sticker Star. It attacks by walking up to Mario and either swinging its arms at him or slamming down on top of him. Whomp moves aside whenever Bowser attacks, briefly exposing and then covering the scissors image on its back. Each attack deals only one HP of damage to Whomp, but it will topple over when struck consecutively with hammer attacks (which is most easily achieved with anEekhammer), leaving it vulnerable to regular damage.

Mario & Luigi series[edit]

Mario & Luigi: Paper Jam[edit]

Papercraft Whomps appear in the Papercraft Fire Mario segment ofMario & Luigi: Paper Jam. They attack like normal Whomps, by slamming down on top of Papercraft Fire Mario. Their vulnerable spot is the bandages on their back.

Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story + Bowser Jr.'s Journey[edit]

During the opening to theBowser Jr.'s Journey mode ofMario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story + Bowser Jr.'s Journey, someone exclaims that someblorbed Goombas have knocked several Whomps down like dominoes.

Mario Tennis Aces[edit]

A Whomp is fought in the third phase ofDefeat Bowser's Minions! at the Castle Gates during Adventure mode inMario Tennis Aces. Whomp takes damage fromBullet Bills andMechakoopas being hit at it with Mario's tennis racket. The Whomp attempts to sidestep Mario's shots.

Dr. Mario World[edit]

A Whomp was originally going to appear as an assistant, but it was removed from the game;^[5] however, theWhomp King still appears as an assistant that can be obtained as a reward in versus mode in at least Tier 9.

Mario Kart series[edit]

Mario Kart Tour[edit]

Whomps made theirMario Kart series debut inMario Kart Tour as obstacles filling the gaps of theBerlin Wall section ofBerlin Byways and inPlaza Mayor inMadrid Drive 3R. They fall on the track as racers drive by, flattening any racer caught under them but providingJump Boosts to those that drive on top of them as they lie down. When lying down, Whomps are invulnerable; otherwise, they can be taken out for bonus points by hitting them with aSpiny Shell,Bowser's Shell,Super Horn,Giga Bob-omb or aSuper Bell, or by driving into them while under the effects ofFrenzy mode, aSuper Star, aMega Mushroom, or aBullet Bill. Notably, this is the first time sinceMario Party: Island Tour in which the redesigned Whomps' expressions become more aggressive-looking before they fall down.

Mario Kart 8 Deluxe[edit]

Tour Berlin Byways returns in theMario Kart 8 Deluxe – Booster Course Pass, bringing Whomps back with it. They are once again filling in gaps of the Berlin Wall, and function the same as they do inMario Kart Tour. They can still be used for Jump Boosts. Their expressions have become more exaggerated to look even more disfigured and unfocused, notably having mismatched eyes.

Mario Kart World[edit]

A new, wedge-shaped type of Whomp called aWhamp appears inMario Kart World, acting as a ramp when it topples over. It has three separate bandages rather than two in an "X" shape, and its face resembles the Whomps' design inSuper Mario Galaxy 2, albeit with a different-shaped mouth and one front tooth instead of three.^[6] It can be found on aroute connecting toCheep Cheep Falls.

Physical description[edit]

Whomps are somewhat similar toThwomps, resembling stone slabs with faces. They have arms and legs, and in their debut,Super Mario 64, their hands are purple ball-shaped, a relic of aprototype designMedia:SM64 Whomp Proto.png's body color. In itsremake and later games, their hands are bare and mitten-like. Like Thwomps, they have red eyes, though Whomps' appear to be glowing over black sclera. Their faces feature permanently angry expression and open mouth with five misaligned teeth. In most titles, Whomps have adhesive bandages in an "X" shape on their backs, covering up various cracks. InSuper Mario Galaxy 2,Mario Party 9 and theSuper Smash Bros. for Wii Utrophy depicting their appearance fromSuper Mario Galaxy 2, they have a carved circle with theGround Pound symbol on it.

In their early appearances, Whomps bore a somewhat narrow shape. InSuper Mario Galaxy 2, their bodies became wider overall, but this has been changed once again sinceMario Party: Island Tour, where it consolidated the two games' designs into one.

Speech[edit]

Whomps make low grunting sounds in the majority of their appearances, varying in tone depending on what they are feeling. In theMario Party series, Whomps are given text dialogue; starting withMario Party 4, their speech is "gangster"-style. However, inMario Party Superstars andSuper Mario Party Jamboree, their words are spoken byToad or the narration.
