Whack-a-Monty is an Actionminigame found inNew Super Mario Bros. Its name and gameplay are based on the real-life arcade gameWhack-a-Mole.
The music that plays during this minigame is an arrangement of "Underground BGM" fromSuper Mario Bros., like inCoincentration,Intense Coincentration, andHide and Boo Seek.
Gameplay[edit]
The minigame takes place on a 5×4 grid, whereMonty Moles andLuigis come out of holes and quickly hide back in them. The player must tap Monty Moles with thestylus to defeat them. Each Monty Mole is worth onepoint if hit. However, the player should be careful that Luigis sometimes pop out. If Luigi is hit, three points are deducted. The player must rack up as many points as possible within the 30-second time limit. The maximum number of points that one can get is 468, as proven through the use of aTAS.[1]
As the player hits the Monty Moles, a stack of hit Monty Moles grows in height in the background, with the hit Monty Moles landing onto the stack. The stack stops increasing in height after the player hits 30 Monty Moles.[2]
In the multiplayer version, up to four players can compete, and whoever has the most points wins. Unlike in single-player mode, the points can go below zero. Multiplayer mode also has adjustable difficulty. The Easy difficulty has no Luigis, the Normal difficulty has some slowly moving Luigis, and the Hard difficulty has many quickly moving Luigis.
