Mario Party 2
“Become deputies in a pioneer town of the Old West and help keep the peace. GetSteamer, the steam engine that circles the map, to knock your opponents off theirspaces and send them back to Start.”
Mario Party 2 instruction booklet[1]
“We're here, everyone! This is Western Land!!! This is a pioneer town of the Old West. A steam engine's whistle echoes across the prairie. You shall become deputies. It's your job to keep the Wild West peaceful! Your objective this time, is to defeatBowser the Brash, the scourge of this quiet town. Defeat Bowser to become the Super Star of Western Land. Good luck!”
Toad,Mario Party 2

Western Land is one of the playable locations in Mario Land inMario Party 2. While in Western Land, players are dressed as deputies, andToad, the host, wears a cowboy hat and plays the guitar. The main attraction is a train named Steamer, who travels around the board and stops at one of the three train stations. If a player wants to ride Steamer, they have to pay the toll of fiveCoins. Once on, the player hits a block that decides which direction Steamer goes. If it shows Toad's head, the train moves forward and stops at the nearest station. If it shows aGoomba, the train moves backward and stops at the nearest station. TheHappening Space also makes Steamer move forward to the next station. While Steamer is moving in either way, players that are in the way are knocked back to Start. There is also a Wiggler that owns a milk shop. It asks players that come by if they want to start a hootenanny for 20 Coins. If the player accepts, the fee is paid, and all of the other players come to the milk shop area. TheItem Minigame isGive Me a Brake!, and theDuel Minigame isQuick Draw Corks.

At the end of the game when Toad is about to announce the winner, he is interrupted by a redKoopa Troopa who comes and alerts the players that the board villain, Bowser the Brash, is robbing theKoopa Bank. A cutscene then shows Bowser the Brash telling the Koopa Banker to get him more coins from the bank, despite the bank having no more to give to him. Then, the superstar comes to confront Bowser. The Koopa hides in his shell as the two engage in a pop-gun quick draw. Bowser misses, shooting just above the superstar's head, and gets hit in the stomach by the superstar's cork. He faints, leaving the superstar to be congratulated by the other players, Toad, Koopa, and theStar.

Western Land returns inSuper Mario Party Jamboree as an unlockable board. It is unlocked after reaching Silver Player Rank.Bank Spaces and costumes were removed, various routes were reworked by either being moved around or redirected in the opposite direction, and the hootenanny is now activated byEvent Spaces near its location. The player is also given the option to call only one random player to the hootenanny for only ten coins. If the player invites everyone for the first time, they get the "Hootenanny Hound" achievement. There is also a new ticket station next to Wiggler's milk saloon that sells a new board-exclusive item called theSteamer Ticket, which can be used to call Steamer over to a station that is empty. The ticket's price varies depending on how many players have already bought it. Steamer himself now costs less to ride, only costing three coins; however, there is now an option to ride him across two stations for six coins. The board is referenced inRainbow Galleria on a sign on the second floor.

Notes[edit]

  • The Japanese version ofMario Party 2 depicts the superstar and Bowser in a quick draw with revolvers. In Western releases, it was changed to a quick draw with pop-guns. As a result of the change, it also makes it more obvious as to who won the gun duel (as originally, the bullets could not be seen, resulting in tense moments before it was revealed Bowser the Brash ended up shot).
  • With a total of 114 spaces, the original version of Western Land is the largest board in theMario Party series that follows traditional gameplay.
    • TheSuper Mario Party Jamboree version of this board is the second largest with 104 spaces, beating outShy Guy's Jungle Jam by only one space andSpiny Desert by three.
  • If the player refuses Wiggler's hootenanny offer, it will say "Y'all come back now, y'hear?", Jed Clampett's catchphrase from the TV seriesThe Beverly Hillbillies.
  • The intro of this board's theme is based on the "Minsky Pickup".
