Weird Mario is a form ofMario acquired by using aWeird Mushroom which first appeared inSuper Mario Maker. In this form, Mario becomes skinnier, much taller and lankier with long legs, making him comparable in height toWaluigi. His physics also become similar to those ofLuigi, gaining higherjumps but lower traction. According toTakashi Tezuka, the form came from a bug that happened during the development ofSuper Mario Maker that madeSuper Mario skinny. However, Tezuka and the team liked the form's design, so they implemented it into the final game. It is exclusive to theSuper Mario Bros. game style, so if the player changes the game style, every Weird Mushroom turns into aSuper Mushroom. If Weird Mario collects a power-up or gets damaged mid-jump, he continues to jump high with the new sprite gaining the animation for walking in mid-air. In the version 1.20 update ofSuper Mario Maker, if the player knocks on aWarp Door by tapping it enough times in build mode, the door briefly opens to reveal Weird Mario in a variety of different poses and costumes, most of which are based on power-ups or mechanics from the original games that are otherwise absent inSuper Mario Maker, such asIce Mario orHammer Mario. While the door is open, the music stops playing.
Weird Mario would have returned inSuper Mario Maker 2, but the form was scrapped from the final game for unknown reasons.[1] However, Weird Mario still answers if a Warp Door is tapped enough times in a row. Weird Mario also appears if the player fails theCatch & Win! minigame in a Super World, coming out of theToad House and shooing the player away while making garbled noises.
In the E3 2014 prototype ofSuper Mario Maker, Weird Mario was originally simply an elongated version ofSmall Mario's sprite, instead of being tall.
