Wayaway Island is one of the major islands inMario & Luigi: Brothership, located on the rightmost portion of theGulchrock Sea. For the majority of the game, it is occupied byBowser andhis minions, who constructed acastle on it, using it as a stronghold and base of operation. Due to being a distant island even beforeConcordia split apart, it is not adjacent to, or on, any currents, nor does it have alighthouse, making it impossible to reach by normal means, such as theShipshape Island's cannon, or theReturn Pipe. Instead, a hidden pipe onMeeger Islet, and another opened from within the island toMynor Islet, are the only ways to visit it.

History[edit]

Background[edit]

Prior to the game's event, Wayaway Island was a deserted island, far away from most of Concordia and thus mostly vacant of people. Sometime before the withering of theUni-Tree, a friend ofDr. Vulko journeyed here, and brought him several of the island's specialty,Ampberries, as souvenir. Due to not being connected to the Uni-Tree, it was mostly unaffected followingZokket's attack on Concordia. After theGreat Conductor's attempt to summon Concordia's potential saviors transported Bowser and his army to this island, they quickly constructed a castle on the island as a base to combat Zokket's troops.

Mario & Luigi: Brothership[edit]

After infiltratingOffandon Island and escaping it with the whereabouts of a shortcut to Wayaway Island, the Mario Bros. venture here to obtain someAmpberries. On the way, they encounterBuddy, who intends to make up withBowser Jr. after their fight. Entering the castle, the Bros. are immediately confronted withKamek, who quickly gave orders to flood the castle with lava, blocking access to the top floor, where the storage room for the Ampberries are located. The Bros. must navigate the castle withBalloon Elevators, using theBros. MoveFire & Ice to control their altitude, and reach the top floor of the castle. Once there, they come face-to-face with Bowser, who refuses to reason with the Mario Bros., and instead summon his legion of minions to attempt to best them.

When Bowser inevitably falls inbattle, theExtension Corps jump in to kidnap Bowser Jr. while the king is still immobile from the battle, planning to use him as a hostage to deter the Bowser army's further aggression. Mario and Luigi attempted to give chase, but after inflictingGlohm on Buddy, who attempted to hinder the kidnapping attempt, the Extension Corps fled with their captive. After instructing nearby minions to fetch an Ampberry in order to cure Buddy, aGoomba accidentally let slip the location of the Ampberries stash, allowing the Bros. to finally retrieve their objectives.

After finalizing the plan to upgradeShipshape Island with eitherTechnikki orAdaphne, the Mario Bros. are tasked to obtain aPart of Bowser's Airship to fully construct the upgrade. Though it is seen in the same storage room as the Ampberries, it is blocked off by various items, and can only be obtained by going through the previously closed side door of the castle, and traversing through its airship hangar to reach the storage room from an alternative exit.

Any enemies fought here has a small chance to drop aWayaway Chain, which is used in certain side quests from the Shipshape Island's workshop.

After Bowser blasts awayReclusa's minions in theSoli-Tree, the front gate to the castle is locked, so the player willnot be able to enter from there. The hangar area on the right where the airship part was found remains accessible, however.

Side quests[edit]

How's Bowser's Health?[edit]

Initially available after linkingJellyfish Island, this time-limited side quest entailsStarlow visiting Bowser as he recovers from his injury, and bringing him aHot Drumstick as a peace offering. Finishing it rewards the player withBowser Spikes. This side quest expires after the second visit toFortress Zokket.

Craft Some Amped Gloves /Craft an Escalation Belt[edit]

Depending on which of the siblings mans the workshop,Billdit andMaykit will put in their respective request to make their magnum opus after the defeat ofGlohm Gorumbla, and the subsequent reconciliation betweenGorumbla andWillma. Regardless of the equipment produced, the material cost remains the same, with the required 8 Wayaway Chains only obtainable through fighting enemies on this island. This quest does not have a deadline, and is always available before the end of the game.

Notes[edit]

  • Using theFire andIce Flowers pressed against the front gate's right side, the player can glitch into the entrance's hitbox and re-enter the castle even when it is locked off, gaining back access to the whole castle.[4] However, the game willsoftlock upon exiting the castle. The only way to escape is to reset the game without saving, as theReturn Pipe does not work here.
  • Wayaway Island's music comes from thefortress theme fromSuper Mario Bros. 3.
