Large bodies ofwater are a staple of theSuper Mario franchise. While their purpose varies between games, they often exist as an alternate medium of traversal compared to dry land, requiring the player character toswim in them to progress. In games where the player character cannot swim, water is often a hazard, functioning similarly to apit. Water often contains unique aquatic enemies, such asCheep Cheeps,Bloopers, andUrchins.
As water is as ubiquitous in theSuper Mario franchise as it is in real life, this article will only cover bodies of water that are directly relevant to gameplay.

Donkey Kong franchise[edit]
Donkey Kong Jr.[edit]
InDonkey Kong Jr., theVine Scene contains water at the bottom of the screen that functions the same as a pit.
Donkey Kong (Game Boy)[edit]
Water appears in several stages ofDonkey Kong for theGame Boy.Mario can enter water andswim through it much like in theSuper Mario series. However, holding akey will cause him to sink, forcing him to walk along the bottom of the water with reduced speed and jump height. Enemies such asBukubuku andGessori can be found in water, making the reduced mobility a greater hazard.
Water appears in twelve stages:
Donkey Kong Country series[edit]
Donkey Kong Country[edit]
Donkey Kong Country, as well as itsGame Boy Color andGame Boy Advance reissues, features four fully underwater levels:Coral Capers,Clam City,Croctopus Chase, andPoison Pond. In these,Donkey Kong andDiddy Kong can swim in any direction, as well as ride onEnguarde, the onlyAnimal Friend to be used underwater. Underwater levels are inhabited by unique enemies such asChomps,Clambos, andCroctopuses, among others.
Donkey Kong Country 2[edit]
Swimmable water reappears inDonkey Kong Country 2: Diddy's Kong Quest andits remake, though it is no longer the sole medium in any level; i.e. bodies of water now have a physical boundary separating them from dry land, with player characters being able to freely jump in and out of it. Newly-introduced marine enemies includeFlotsams,Lockjaws, andShuris; land-based enemies move slowly and cannot be attacked while submerged, as illustrated by aKlomp found at the beginning of Glimmer's Galleon.Glimmer debuts as a second underwater Animal Friend alongside the returning Enguarde.
Several game mechanics tied to swimmable water are introduced in this game, often acting as the defining gimmick of a level. In Lava Lagoon, water is red-hot and must be periodically cooled down withClapper to be traversable. In Slime Climb, rising water pursues theKongs as they scale the shipwreck's masts, carrying aSnapjaw with it. Fluctuating water levels may also appear in icy environments, such as in Arctic Abyss and Animal Antics. In Clapper's Cavern, the Animal Friend can temporarily freeze the water solid and render its surface walkable.
Swimmable water appears in seven levels:
Swamp-themed levels (namelyBarrel Bayou,Krockhead Klamber, andMudhole Marsh) feature a type of murky water that covers their entire bottom side; if the Kongs fall in it, they lose a life. These waters are often inhabited byKrockheads.
Donkey Kong Country 3[edit]
InDonkey Kong Country 3: Dixie Kong's Double Trouble! andits remake, water functions largely as in the predecessor. Many levels combine water with dry land, typically in stilt- and riverbank-themed levels such as Lakeside Limbo and Riverside Race. Fully underwater levels also return, including Bazza's Blockade, Fish Food Frenzy, Floodlit Fish, and Ripcurl Reef. Common acquatic enemies in this game includeKocos andNibblas. Enguarde is now the sole Animal Friend to be used underwater, thoughEllie can swim on its surface.Squawks releases the Kongs and flies off upon approaching the surface of a water body. Exclusively in Tidal Trouble and Ripcurl Reef, constantcurrents run through the water, either flowing against the player characters (in the former) or continually pushing them left and right (in the latter).
There are some water-related interactions unique to this game. Thrownbarrels andSteel Barrels become buoyant in water, floating on the surface and acting as platforms; if Ellie stands on one of these, she can store water in her trunk and release it in a spraying attack.Kiddy Kong can performWater Skips on the surface of water. In Lightning Lookout, thelightning strikes momentarily electrify entire bodies of water, zapping the Kongs if they are in contact with the water at that moment.
Swimmable water appears in 16 levels:
The levelPoisonous Pipeline is filled with apoisonous fluid that has the properties of swimmable water, except it reverses the player's horizontal controls. Additionally, waterfalls are a prevalent aesthetic and functional element in certain levels.
Donkey Kong Country Returns[edit]
Donkey Kong Country Returns anditsreissues forgo swimming mechanics entirely, though water is still a prominent gameplay element. This time, it stretches along the bottom portions of many levels in theBeach andRuins worlds, acting as a substitute to pits that cause the Kongs to lose a life. Water is typically inhabited bySnaggles, who regularly leap out of it to attack. In Stormy Shore, the rough sea creates tall water tides that carry platforms. It becomes a destructive force in Tidal Terror, where large waves come crashing down from the background at regular intervals, destroying enemies and structures; the Kongs instantly lose a life if caught by a wave.
Bodies of water acting as pits appear in nine levels:
Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze[edit]
Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze andits port restore swimmable water sections seen in earlierDonkey Kong Country titles. These are prevalent inLost Mangroves andSea Breeze Cove and host enemies such asBlue Finleys,Gordos,Mama Saws, andFritz.
Swimmable water appears in 12 levels:
In addition, a juice-like fluid appears in many sections ofPanicky Paddles. The Kongs can swim through it just as in water.
Donkey Kong Bananza[edit]
InDonkey Kong Bananza, water is a type ofterrain classified as "extra soft". Individual bodies and streams of water occasionally appear, whichDonkey Kong can destroy by moving into it or inhaling it using theElephant Bananza. Water can be continuously destroyed if Donkey Kong stands below a water stream.
Large bodies of indestructible water also appear in layers such as theLagoon Layer and theResort Layer. Donkey Kong may swim through orSurf Surf on it, or dash on top of the water surface usingZebra Bananza. Inhaling these bodies of water using the Elephant Bananza does not destroy the water, but still allows Donkey Kong to store spheres of water in his trunk.
Being in contact with water turnslava into obsidian. Water also conducts electricity, allowing an electric current to run through a body of water. In theFreezer Layer, water is cold and deals freezing damage when Donkey Kong is in contact with it.
Super Mario series[edit]
Super Mario Bros. /Super Mario Bros.: The Lost Levels[edit]
Bottom:World 3-1's pool of purely aesthetic water.
Super Mario Bros. introduces underwater levels to the franchise. They are entirely submerged in water, allowing Mario (orLuigi) toswim freely, and they are near exclusively populated byBloobers andCheep Cheeps. A smaller body of water also appears inWorld 3-1 only. This type of water is purely aesthetic and cannot be swum in, and it instead serves as a type ofbottomless pit, functioning identically tolava.
Swimmable water appears in five levels:
- World 2-2
- World 5-2 (sub-area only)
- World 6-2 (sub-area only)
- World 7-2
- World 8-4 (penultimate section only)
Both the swimmable and aesthetic types of water reappear inSuper Mario Bros.: The Lost Levels and function identically to their previous appearance, although purely aesthetic water is now considerably more common. Purely aesthetic water appears in ten levels:
Swimmable water appears in ten levels:
In the originalNintendo Entertainment System versions of both games, water uses the same graphics as lava but colored blue instead of red. InSuper Mario Bros. Deluxe, the surface of the water is now animated.
Super Mario Bros. (Game & Watch)[edit]
Super Mario Bros. for theGame & Watch features a single underwater level,World No. 4 Channel. Although it is visually identical to other levels, Mario is granted free movement in all four directions, and is unable to fall into pits.
Super Mario Bros. Special[edit]
Both swimmable bodies of water, as well as the aesthetic pools of water that cannot be swum in, re-appear inSuper Mario Bros. Special, functioning the same as they do inSuper Mario Bros., albeit with swimming controlling differently. In addition, some levels will only have segments set underwater before transitioning to an above-water area. A new item, theWing, allows Mario to fly through the air by using the game's swimming controls, as if the level was underwater.
Swimmable water appears in six levels:
Purely aesthetic water appears in ten levels:
Super Mario Bros. 2[edit]
Non-interactable bodies appear inSuper Mario Bros. 2 where they function as a type of bottomless pit. They appear in all levels ofWorld 4. Waterfalls are present in some levels, but are likewise non-interactable.Trouters are a notable water enemy, usually found jumping in and out of water.Whales are found exclusively inWorld 4-2, where they can serve as platforms to cross large bodies of water. Whales will also occasionally spray water out of their blow holes, which can be used to reach higher places. However, touching these water sprays from the sides causes the player to take damage.
Super Mario Bros. 3[edit]
Swimmable water reappears inSuper Mario Bros. 3, building on its iteration inSuper Mario Bros. Rather than being limited to fully underwater or overground levels,Super Mario Bros. 3 features bodies of water of various sizes, allowing Mario (or Luigi) to enter and exit them without the need to travel through a pipe. Swimmable waterfalls that pull the player down are intoduced in this game, as well aswater tides, bodies of water that can move up and down.
Water Land, the third world of the game, is primarily centered around water, and introduces the majority of new aquatic enemies, such asBoss Bass,Lava Lotus, andJelectro. Its overworld map also features aCanoe that can be used to freely traverse the water, granting access to two hidden islands with exclusiveToad's Houses andSpade Panels.
Water appears in 26 levels:
Super Mario Land[edit]
Super Mario Land features water exclusively in theMuda Kingdom. Its first two levels,World 2-1 andWorld 2-2, merely feature a layer of purely aesthetic water at the bottom of the level, in a manner reminiscent ofSuper Mario Bros.World 2-3, however, is entirely submerged underwater, enabling Mario to traverse it using theMarine Pop. The entirety of Muda Kingdom features various aquatic enemies that jump out of the water, swim within it, or both.
Super Mario World /Super Mario World: Super Mario Advance 2[edit]
InSuper Mario World, water appears in three distinct forms:
- The first is underwater-themed levels, in which the entire stage is flooded with water.
- The second type is a semitransparent layer of water covering the bottom of the screen, which continuously moves to the left, carrying the player with it.
- The third is opaque pools of water that occupy specific areas of the level.
In all cases, Mario (or Luigi) is able to swim in water, just like in previous games. Various new enemies are designed to interact with water, or appear exclusively within water; these areTorpedo Ted,Blurp,Porcu-Puffer,Urchin,Rip Van Fish andFishbone. The returningCheep Cheeps now flop around while out of the water.Floating Mines, floating island platforms and some types oflift float on the surface of water.
Water appears in 21 levels:
- Yoshi's Island 4 (layer of water)
- Donut Secret 1 (fully underwater)
- Vanilla Dome 2 (pools of water)
- Vanilla Dome 3 (pools of water; exclusive to sub-area)
- #3 Lemmy's Castle (pools of water)
- Vanilla Secret 3 (layer of water)
- Vanilla Fortress (fully underwater)
- Cookie Mountain (layer of water; exclusive to sub-area)
- Soda Lake (fully underwater; also features pools of water in its ending area)
- Forest of Illusion 2 (fully underwater)
- Forest of Illusion 4 (fully underwater; exclusive to sub-area)
- Chocolate Island 1 (layer of water; exclusive to sub-area)
- Chocolate Island 2 (pools of water; exclusive to the third area's third variation)
- Chocolate Island 5 (pools of water)
- Sunken Ghost Ship (first two sections are fully underwater, final section features a pool of water)
- Valley of Bowser 1 (pools of water)
- Valley of Bowser 4 (pools of water; exclusive to sub-area)
- Front Door (fully underwater; exclusive to door #6)
- Star World 2 (fully underwater; also features pools of water in its ending area)
- Awesome (pools of water)
- Mondo (layer of water;moves up and down)
Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins[edit]
Water appears in several levels ofSuper Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins, functioning similarly to its appearance inSuper Mario Bros. 3 andSuper Mario World. There are no levels that take place fully underwater. Due to the more varied themes of this game's zones, water is more spread out throughout the game, although it is the most prominent inTurtle Zone. It appears in seven levels:
- Bubble Course
- Flower Course
- Fireplace Course
- Graveyard Course
- Cheep Cheep Course
- Sunken Ship Course
- Whale Course
Two parts of the game feature mechanics that function similarly to water: the low-gravity environment ofStar Course allows Mario to jump repeatedly to gain height, whileTree Trunk Course features pockets of gelatinoustree sap that provide a near-identical effect.
Super Mario 64 /Super Mario 64 DS[edit]
Water is a common element of courses inSuper Mario 64 and its remake,Super Mario 64 DS. Once again, entering water allows the player to swim, utilzing unique controls compared to previous 2D installments. While submerged in water, the player will slowly losehealth, and will regenerate it by being on the water's surface. As such, water can be used to heal damage from other sources.
Various new mechanics related to water are introduced. Bodies of water can havecurrents that push the player in a given direction.Wet-Dry World featuresCrystal Taps that change the water level when touched.Snowman's Land andChief Chilly Challenge featurefreezing water, which damages the player when swum in.Metal Mario (or Metal Wario in the remake) sinks in water instead of swimming, enabling him to walk on the floor below. Two types ofKoopa Shell allow the player to surf on top of water or swim faster within it, respectively. Similarly,Luigi, who is exclusive to the remake, has the ability to run on the surface of water for a brief period of time.
Several characters and enemies introduced in this game interact with water, such asSkeeters,Dorrie,Sushi, and themanta. Conversely, some returning enemies feature new interactions with water, such asGoombas dying upon touching it, or the aforementioned Koopa Shell surfing.
Water first appears outside of theMushroom Castle'sCastle Grounds, filling the moat and the pond. The moat can be drained by traveling through a flooded passageway in the basement andGround Pounding two pillars; this grants access toThe Secret Under the Moat (known as "Vanish Cap Under the Moat" in theNintendo 64 version). Additionally, the Mushroom Castle's basement andcourtyard also feature small, shallow pools of water.
Aside from the Mushroom Castle, water appears in the following courses. Normal courses[1] are listed first, followed by mini courses.[2] Courses that only feature a small amount of water will beitalicized:
- Whomp's Fortress
- Jolly Roger Bay
- Cool, Cool MountainN64
- Big Boo's Haunt
- Hazy Maze Cave
- Shifting Sand Land
- Dire, Dire Docks
- Snowman's Land (freezing water only)
- Wet-Dry World
- Tall, Tall Mountain
- Tiny-Huge Island
- Sunshine IslesDS
- The Secret Aquarium
- Cavern of the Metal CapN64 /Behind the WaterfallDS
- Chief Chilly ChallengeDS
Super Mario Sunshine[edit]
Water is particularly prominent inSuper Mario Sunshine. The game's main mechanic isFLUDD, a machine worn by Mario that can spray water for various purposes. F.L.U.D.D. has a limited capacity that drains while spraying water, which can be refilled by submerging Mario in water. Swimming below the surface of water now drains Mario's air meter instead of his Health Meter. The air meter is restored if Mario is above the water's surface. If Mario enters water deep enough to swim in while riding a Yoshi, or dismounts a Yoshi in shallow water, the Yoshi dissolves.
Due to the game's tropical setting ofIsle Delfino, most areas in the game feature bodies of water, most commonly the ocean surrounding the isle. The only course to not feature any bodies of water isCorona Mountain.
Bianco Hills,Ricco Harbor, andNoki Bay also containslimy water in certain episodes. Slimy water deals damage to Mario if he stays on its surface, but it can be swum in normally (draining Mario's air meter) if he stays below the surface. Similarly, a substance known ashot water appears during the game's final boss battle againstBowser andBowser Jr., which causes Mario to recoil and take damage on contact. Despite its name, hot water does not resemble either real-world water or the game's ordinary water and appears to be a type of green slime.
New Super Mario Bros.[edit]
Water appears most commonly inNew Super Mario Bros. inWorld 3, which mainly consists of beach-themed levels. However, water also appears in some levels outside World 3 as a key component.
Super Mario Galaxy[edit]
Stages dedicated to water appear inSuper Mario Galaxy, such asBeach Bowl Galaxy, which mainly contains water-based missions.
New Super Mario Bros. Wii[edit]
Water appears most commonly inNew Super Mario Bros. Wii inWorld 4, which mainly consists of beach-themed levels that contain water. However, water also appears in some levels outside World 4 as a key component. Some levels ofWorld 7 contain floating bubbles of water.
Super Mario Galaxy 2[edit]
Stages dedicated to water appear inSuper Mario Galaxy 2, such asCosmic Cove Galaxy, which mainly contains water-based missions.
Super Mario 3D Land[edit]
InSuper Mario 3D Land, bodies of water as a gameplay element are featured in various coast-themed courses. Mario and Luigi retain most of their moveset when underwater; however, they fall slower, andGround Pounds cause them to instead only descend briefly. They can repeatedly swim upwards in water, reflecting the underwater movement seen inSuper Mario Bros.Coin rings tend be used in place of coins, andCheep Cheeps,Bloopers,Porcupuffers,Spike Eels, andthistles appear as enemies. Decorative seaweed and schools of fish can be seen in underwater areas.
The first coast-themed course,World 3-2, features alternating aboveground and underwater sections. A single underwaterpit is used as an additional hazard in this course. AWarp Pipe inWorld 6-1 leads to its sole underwater area, which features aRed Ring as well as the course's secondStar Medal. The majority ofWorld 7-1 takes place in acenote leading to a flooded cave system filled with Spike Eels.Special 2-2 is based on World 3-2 and features similar underwater sections. The musical theme that plays in these courses, "Beach Theme", transitions to a subdued arrangement whenever the player is submerged in water.
Shallow pools and streams of water occasionally appear as decorative components of courses. While the water itself cannot be entered, coins and Cheep Cheeps often move along these areas of water. The beginning ofWorld 1-1 features two flowing streams of water, and a pool of water can be found near the end of the course. InWorld 2-1 andSpecial 1-1, a pool of water appears near the end of the course on the castle's roof. A pool of water that feeds into a flowing stream of water appears inWorld 4-1. An underground room inWorld 5-4 with Warp Pipes andPipe Boards is filled with a shallow pool of water.
Some courses feature water as a background element. World 1-1 is situated above a body of water in front of Peach's Castle.World 1-3 andSpecial 4-4 take place in a mountainous region above water that is filled with waterfalls.World 1-4 takes place among rock spires above an ocean, which appears to create geysers which lift the course'sSwitchboards; these geysers, however, appear in other courses that do not appear to take place above oceans. The coast-themed courses World 3-2, World 6-1, World 7-1,Special 1-4, and Special 2-2 all feature ocean backgrounds with scattered islands, and Cheep Cheeps and Porcupuffers appear to leap out of the ocean in World 6-1.World 5-5 takes place above a lake filled with islands occupied by wind turbines.
New Super Mario Bros. 2[edit]
Water appears most commonly inNew Super Mario Bros. 2 inWorld 3, which partially consists of beach-themed levels that contain water. However, water also appears in some levels outside World 3 as a key component.
New Super Mario Bros. U[edit]
Water appears most commonly inNew Super Mario Bros. U inSparkling Waters, which mainly consists of beach-themed levels that contain water. However, water also appears in some levels outside of Sparkling Waters as a key component.
Super Mario Odyssey[edit]
Super Mario Odyssey prominently features bodies of water, functioning similarly to previous 3D games in theSuper Mario series. Mario once again has an air meter while underwater, except inAssist Mode. Mario andCappy move slower underwater, which slows down theCap Throw move. ManyPower Moons are hidden underwater or require the player to traverse water to reach them.
If Mario falls towards water from a great height, he switches to a diving animation. If Mario dives into water from a large height, be that through this animation change or by using thedive move, he dramatically dives into the water. His air meter will not appear until this animation is finished. If Mario rebounds off a wall following aroll, long jump, dive, orquick swim at the surface, then falls into water, an alternate animation of him getting his bearings plays out. This takes longer than a normal recovery, and the air meter still starts from when Mario enters the water. A similar animation occurs when quick swimming into walls while underwater, which takes just as long.
Characters who cannot swim in water disappear on contact with it. This is especially relevant because Mario cancapture other characters to control them. Should the player steer a captured character who cannot swim into water, Mario will be forced out of the character as they vanish. However, some captures are designed to function alongside water:
- Frogs are able to swim on the surface of water, but cannot dive below it.
- Lakitus can fish for Cheep Cheeps, which awardcoins andhearts, andBig Cheep Cheeps, which award Power Moons.
- Zippers ignore water altogether.
- Cheep Cheeps are able to swim faster than Mario, while also having no air meter. A purple variant in the Snow Kingdom also allows Mario to swim infreezing water.
- Gushens recharge their supply of water when touching water, in a manner similar to FLUDD fromSuper Mario Sunshine. Much like frogs, they are also able to float on the surface of water, but cannot dive below it.
Water is first encountered inside theCap Kingdom'sTop-Hat Tower, and can be found in most kingdoms in some capacity. The only kingdoms without water are theCloud,Lost,Ruined,Luncheon, andMoon Kingdoms, and theDark Side.
TheLake Kingdom andSeaside Kingdom both prominently feature water, and a considerable part of them is submerged below it. The Lake Kingdom has glass domes in the water, which have entrances that allow people and air through but not water. Buildings such as theWater Plaza are within these domes, enabling ground based exploration despite being below sea level. Water is additionally used to pass between floors of the Water Plaza, with something similar to these domes holding the water in a column. The Seaside Kingdom is known for having carbonated water in its ocean. This water is blended in theGlass Tower to createSparkle Water, a beverage that is a focal point of the story in the Seaside Kingdom and one of the items stolen byBowser.
TheSnow Kingdom features the return of freezing water, while theLost Kingdom features an ocean ofpoison instead.
Super Mario Bros. Wonder[edit]
Water appears most commonly inSuper Mario Bros. Wonder inPetal Isles, which consists of beach-themed levels in the first few levels. There is also a Dolphin Kickbadge to help the player swim faster in water.
Yoshi's Island series[edit]
Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island /Yoshi's Island: Super Mario Advance 3[edit]
Bodies of water have a reduced presence inSuper Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island and itsGame Boy Advance reissue,Yoshi's Island: Super Mario Advance 3. Unlike Mario,Yoshi floats on water, and therefore can only swim near the surface of water. By jumping into water from a high place, he may dive slightly deeper, which can be used to get under certain barriers.Poochy can also swim across water in this way. Deeper water can only be traversed when transformed intoSubmarine Yoshi.Eggs can be skipped along the surface of water, including after ricocheting off of walls, which is necessary to collect certain items as well as to damageNaval Piranha, the only boss whose arena has water.
Various enemies are found on the surface of water, such asSpray Fish andNep-Enuts, and in deep water, such asLoch Nestors andPreying Mantas. Cheep Cheeps appear both on the surface of water and underwater, known in English as "Flopsy Fish" when on the water's surface and "Piscatory Pete" when underwater.
Water appears in 14 levels, one of which exclusive toYoshi's Island: Super Mario Advance 3:
- 1-7:Touch Fuzzy, Get Dizzy
- 1-8:Salvo The Slime's Castle
- 2-3:What's Gusty Taste Like?
- 3-1:Welcome To Monkey World!
- 3-2:Jungle Rhythm...
- 3-3:Nep-Enut's Domain (features Submarine Yoshi)
- 3-4:Prince Froggy's Fort
- 3-7:Monkeys' Favorite Lake (features Submarine Yoshi)
- 3-8:Naval Piranha's Castle
- Secret 3:Go! Go! Morphing!(GBA) (features Submarine Yoshi)
- 4-6:Lake Shore Paradise
- Extra 4:The Impossible? Maze
- 5-3:Danger - Icy Conditions Ahead
- Extra 6:Castles - Masterpiece Set(SNES) /Ultimate Castle Challenge(GBA)
Yoshi's Story[edit]
Bodies of water appear inYoshi's Story, most prominently inP. 5-Ocean. Besides the usual swimmable water,Torrential Maze features rushing water that can push Yoshi down slopes.
Yoshi's Island DS[edit]
Water inYoshi's Island DS serves a similar purpose as inSuper Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island. Submarine Yoshi reappears in this game.
Yoshi's New Island[edit]
InYoshi's New Island, if Yoshi has aMetal Eggdozer in their possession, then they sink in water and can walk across the ground. This is similar to Metal Mario does inSuper Mario 64. If the Metal Eggdozer isthrown, Yoshi immediately rises again. Submarine Yoshi returns as well.
Yoshi's Woolly World /Poochy & Yoshi's Woolly World[edit]
InYoshi's Woolly World and its remakePoochy & Yoshi's Woolly World, water reprises its roles from theYoshi series. Yoshi and Poochy retain their ability to swim from those games. Yoshi canGround Pound into the water to very easily sink below the surface briefly. Yoshi cannot jump high when leaving water, but can stand on Poochy to circumvent this.Yarn balls replace Yoshi's Eggs in this game, but have identical water skimming abilities.Mermaid Yoshi can freely swim underwater, and even up waterfalls. Sequins are seen in the water, as well as strands of blue yarn in varying shades.
The coursesRolling Down the River andWonderful World of Wool have sections where Yoshi rides a raft in autoscrolling sections. Downward sloped areas have strong currents pushing the raft and the screen faster than normal. These are indicated by conveyor belts in the water, moving the fluid and the raft but not doing the same for Yoshi.
Flowing water lets characters move faster when moving with it, but slows them down when they move in the opposite direction. If characters do not move in flowing water, they get pushed by it. The more flowing water is moving over the same surface, the stronger its effects are. Flowing water is represented entirely by strands of blue yarn in varying shades. It is usually seen flowing out of pipes. Certain portions of flowing water on steep slopes have conveyor belts of blue fabric under them to show they flow faster. If flowing water drops downward, it pushes Yoshi downward until he reaches water. There is one room with a door inNaval Piranha's Sewer where flowing water falling downward does not push Yoshi, given the pipes dropping this water are above a door on a platform and the player should be able to jump and reach that door in one motion. Flowing water passes through platforms that are grates.
Water using and water dwelling enemies from theYoshi series also reappear, like Spray Fish, Nep-Enuts, andLunge Fish. The only enemies that appear underwater areCheep Cheeps and Shy Guys trapped inIce Blocks. Any other enemies that touch a body of water are destroyed instantly. Note that flowing water is not a body of water.
InPoochy & Yoshi's Woolly World thePoochy Pups can replace yarn balls, but act identically to yarn balls when following Yoshi and when thrown. The remake also includes aPoochy Dash mode where Poochy is the player character. The only course with water isZippy Lagoon. Poochy handles in water as normal, though he can sink deeper given he can freely jump. Poochy does not bounce off walls and dropbeads in the process as long as he is in water. The Poochy Pups are collectables that follow Poochy once found, so they can swim as well. A whirlpool in the course allows Poochy to stay underwater in one area.
Yoshi's Crafted World[edit]
InYoshi's Crafted World, Yoshi cannot swim. However, Poochy retains the ability, so Yoshi can ride on Poochy to circumvent this.
Mario Party series[edit]
Bodies of water are featured in various minigames from theMario Party series. Water is typically an obstacle or a medium for players to navigate through, usually by swimming or being on transportation devices ranging from simple rafts to vehicles including boats and submarines. Other times, water is used as a hazard, where players that fall into it are considered eliminated.
Underwater environments are sometimes the setting of some boards, such asDeep Bloober Sea andUndersea Dream, but the effect is purely aesthetic.
Water is featured in the following minigames, with their roles indicated.

Paper Mario series[edit]
Paper Mario[edit]
InPaper Mario, water cannot be entered or even jumped over unless Mario is ridingSushie, who allows him to swim over the surface and briefly dive beneath the surface. Mario can only start riding Sushie while standing onwooden docks, so not all bodies of water can be traversed this way.
Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door[edit]
InPaper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door, Mario can safely jump over water. However, if he lands in water, he is invariably attacked byNibbles, damaging him and forcing him back onto land, unless he is inBoat Mode. Boat Mode can only be activated while Mario is standing on specialboat panels, similarly to Sushie's wooden docks, so much like inPaper Mario not all bodies of water can be safely traversed.
Bowser'sWorld 2 platforming level features him underwater. While underwater, Bowser cannot jump out and is able to breathe fire at any height.
Super Paper Mario[edit]
InSuper Paper Mario, much ofThe Tile Pool takes place underwater. Smaller bodies of water appear elsewhere in the game:Flipside andFlopside have an underwater canal,Gloam Valley has platforms floating in a pool of water, theGap of Crag has a river, andThe Underwhere has theRiver Twygz. Underwater controls are similar to theSuper Mario series, although Brick Blocks cannot be broken by hitting them from below.
Paper Mario: Sticker Star[edit]
InPaper Mario: Sticker Star, water again is an impassible portion of the terrain, forming invisible walls. Mario does not gain any ability or any ally that allows him to enter water in the field. In this game, filled bodies of water have a shiny texture.
Water is used in additional ways in some courses.Water's Edge Way has water coming from a Bowser-shaped fountain head that flows down into a cave then back out through a different opening as a geyser. This water both prevents entry to the cave and prevents the player from reaching thescrap form of a Comet Piece thatKamek tosses away earlier in the course such that it lands on top of the geyser. The fountain head is powered by water coming through theFaucet, which is hidden in another cave, and collecting the Faucet causes the flow to drain into a separate grate. This stops the water from coming out of the fountain head, meaning there is no water to block the cave and carry the Comet Piece, enabling Mario to collect the Comet Piece to use later on to complete the course. The Faucet can be placed on a vessel of water inDamp Oasis throughpaperization, which causes the water to flow out of the vessel through the Faucet and flood the screen. When the water recedes, the area is restored from a barren desert to a lush oasis. AToad there switches into swim trunks during the cutscene so that they can relax in the oasis, and is in such a hurry to do that they do not lock the door to their house after they leave. This is a necessary part of progression, as the house contains atreasure chest that contains aTablet Piece. InRugged Road, Mario can enter theBubbling Waters Natural Hot Springs to recover HP.Kersti notes she cannot enter the hot spring, because she is asticker.
Surfshine Harbor connects to theDecal Channel, which is the only way to reachWorld 4,World 5, andWorld 6. Mario has to get a boat from Surfshine Harbor to be able to enter the Decal Channel and proceed to these worlds.
InWorld 3, most of the water in the forest is corrupted bypoison, which counterintuitively makes it traversable since it is poison and not water. OnceGooper Blooper, the boss of World 3 and the source of the poison, is defeated, all the poison goes away. Note that water does not return; all the passages poison occupied become empty. The lone exception is a hot spring inTree Branch Trail, which has water again and can be entered.
Paper Mario: Color Splash[edit]
InPaper Mario: Color Splash,Cobalt Base has an underwater section, with Mario floating in abubble. If he losesSnifit or Whiffit, aBig Urchin pops the bubble, leading him to drown.Fort Cobalt takes place at a port, with Ludwig attacking Mario with hisSuper Ludship andSuper Ludsub on the water.
InCherry Lake, aShy Guy gets caught on a waterwheel and dipped underwater, turning into aSoggy Guy. Water surrounds theIndigo Underground,Sunglow Ridge, andChâteau Chanterelle, as well as the hot springs in theRedpepper Crater. AtBloo Bay Beach, Mario can walk in shallow water.
The ocean is drained of color and needs the blue Big Paint Star to fill it in. After it is cleared, Mario and theViolet Passage captain's crew set sail toFortune Island, stopping atVortex Island andLighthouse Island along the way.
Plum Park is initially flooded with poisonous water that harms Mario if he stays in it, needing abucket to safely traverse it. AfterPetea Piranha's defeat, the water is purified and Mario can enter it normally.
Mario & Luigi series[edit]
Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga /Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga + Bowser's Minions[edit]
InMario & Luigi: Superstar Saga and its remakeMario & Luigi: Superstar Saga + Bowser's Minions, the entirety of theSeabed and parts ofGwarhar Lagoon are located underwater. Underwater areas are always connected to the surface via yellowWarp Pipes that Mario & Luigi can ascend by climbing up them. While Mario and Luigi move sluggishly in the overworld while underwater, it does not affect theirFirebrand andThunderhand moves, and Mario and Luigi are completely unaffected by water in battle.
While above water, Mario and Luigi can only cross water by Mario surfing using Luigi as asurfboard, which requires Mario tohammer Luigi using theDunk Hammer move into metal slots calledSurfing Spots located near water. These slots are only accessible after Mario and Luigi have theUltra Hammers.
Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story /Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story + Bowser Jr.'s Journey[edit]
InMario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story and its remakeMario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story + Bowser Jr.'s Journey, theSea Pipe Statue begins spraying an endless stream of water once it is defeated. Bowser can drink the water to flood thePump Works in his body, allowing Mario and Luigi to swim around freely.
Bowser canpunchcannonball-like devices inBlubble Lake, which loop around to knock Bowser into the water. While underwater, Bowser'sFlame is replaced by swimming upward. There is a cap on how high Bowser can rise, in that he cannot swim above the play area. To return to the surface, Bowser can stand on red clams that are occasionally pushed upward by underwater currents. The force of this current throws Bowser back to land. The only enemies found underwater areCrawfuls.
Bowser can stand onSquid Fit and punch against the terrain, which pushes him and the raft in the opposite direction across the surface of water. They can only move in orthogonal directions. However, Bowser can punch terrain while moving, redirecting him and the Squid Fit. The movement being performed before the punch is fully negated, again because they can only move in orthogonal directions.
Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker[edit]
InCaptain Toad: Treasure Tracker, water appears in several courses, serving the same purpose as it did inCaptain Toad Makes a Splash inSuper Mario 3D World. The newly-introducedSuper Pickax and spinning move can both be used to defeat enemies underwater.
InWalleye Tumble Temple,Captain Toad can fall into water which containsHidden Coins and an exit staircase.Piranha Creeper Cove contains a beachside body of water with hidden coins. It also includes an underwater section featuringPiranha Creepers that contains the course's secondSuper Gem.
Briny Bowl Swimming Hole is filled with water; usingPull Switches, Captain Toad can raise platforms to the surface of the water, granting access to the course's third Super Gem and its Power Star.Cheep Cheeps appear as underwater enemies in this course. The musical theme heard in this course as well as other courses featuring water, "Briny Bowl Swimming Hole", is an arrangement of "Beach Theme" fromSuper Mario 3D Land that similarlyadaptively plays a subdued arrangement when Captain Toad is underwater.
TheEpisode 3 prologue, which can be replayed asEpisode 3 Prologue, features a shallow pool of water. In theSpecial Episode exclusive to theNintendo Switch version of the game, this water also appears inBoo Spotting at Darkly Cove.
Floaty Fun Water Park is also filled with water, andInnertube Goombas that move along the surface of the water appear. When aP Switch is hit, the water and Innertube Goombas rise. A bridge that floats atop the water rises as well, allowingToadette to reach the course's Power Star. A hidden area of the course containing the course's third Super Gem features Cheep Cheeps as enemies.
One corner ofPickax Cave Plummet is filled with water, which can be entered with aSuper Pickax to reach the course's first Super Gem. A Pull Switch allows Captain Toad to exit the water. InStumpy Springs Sanctuary, a P Switch causes a geyser to start rising and lowering from a shallow pool of water.
In theWii U version of the game,Super Bell Hill andConkdor Canyon, returning fromSuper Mario 3D World, both feature small, circular pools of water containing coins. Newly-addedladders allow Captain Toad to exit the water. Super Bell Hill additionally features a shallow pool of water in its first area.
In the Special Episode,Goomba Galleon features a beached ship. A Super Pickax can be used to destroy an underwaterRock Block and cause half of the ship to sink deeper into the water, which grants access to the course's Power Star.
Several courses and areas feature decorative bodies of water. TheFire Flower andSuper Star optical illusion seen in the first of two title screen idle areas is placed above a shallow water basin. During the cutscene "The Hunt for the Great Bird's Lair", Captain Toad camps next to ahot spring.Mine Cart Tunnel Throwdown appears to take place in a cave above water and Super Bell Hill takes place above water.Mine Cart Cascade Crusade, which is exclusive to the Nintendo Switch andNintendo 3DS versions of the game, takes place in theCascade Kingdom and is filled with waterfalls that lead into shallow pools of water.
