Doors,[1][2] also referred to asWarp Doors,[3] appear in several installments of theSuper Mario series as objects that takeMario,Luigi, or another character to another part of alevel. Most of them are unlocked, while some, known asKey Doors, require akey to be opened. Some games featureP Warp Doors, which are blue doors that appear only while aP Switch is active.
History[edit]
Super Mario series[edit]
Super Mario Bros. 2[edit]
InSuper Mario Bros. 2, doors are the main means of transporting between areas. The game consists of three different types of doors: red swing-open ones, doorless entryways, and special doors with keyholes that require the player to search for the Key inPhantos' lairs to open. They also serve ascheckpoints as, on losing a life, the player would resume from the last door they passed through. In both theSuper Mario All-Stars andSuper Mario Advance versions, a pair of dark yellow double doors (similar toSuper Mario World's) replaces doorless entryways while in the overworld areas, and a giant iron bar door with aBob-omb emblem appears as the cave entrance inWorld 6-3.
Super Mario Bros. 3 /Super Mario Advance 4: Super Mario Bros. 3[edit]
Doorless entryways are also used in theNintendo Entertainment System version ofSuper Mario Bros. 3. In both theSuper Mario All-Stars andSuper Mario Advance 4: Super Mario Bros. 3 versions, they are replaced with wooden doors. P Warp Doors make their first appearance in this game, being visible and usable only when a P Switch is active. Another variant known asMagic Doors appears inWorld 4-6; when Magic Doors are entered, Mario can transition between giant and normal-sized versions of the stage.
Super Mario World /Super Mario World: Super Mario Advance 2[edit]
Yellow Doors,[4]:12 orYellow Exit Doors,[4]:13 are used mainly inGhost Houses, fortresses, andcastles inSuper Mario World andits reissue to transportMario orLuigi to another room. Big red ones debut in this game, serving as boss rooms' entry points.
New Super Mario Bros. series[edit]
In theNew Super Mario Bros. series, doors have appeared in many Ghost Houses,Towers and Castles, as well as at the end of each Tower and Castle throughout the series leading to the boss. The regular Warp Doors now has the control pad and an up arrow on them. Starting withNew Super Mario Bros. Wii, tower boss doors are red, castle boss doors are blue, and the door that leads to Bowser is green. Some doors in Ghost Houses are fake; if the player tries to open one, it disappears and fourBoos run away, leaving acoin behind.
Super Mario 3D series[edit]
Doors also appear inSuper Mario 3D Land,Super Mario 3D World andSuper Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury, where they are mainly found inToad Houses, as well as Ghost Houses, and in some other stages.
Super Mario Maker subseries[edit]
InSuper Mario Maker andSuper Mario Maker for Nintendo 3DS, Warp Doors can be used as course elements. They transport the player to a different part of the area. Up to 8 pairs of doors (4 pairs per area) can be placed in the level. As of the 1.20 update, players can knock multiple times on doors in the Course Maker to revealWeird Mario. The 1.30 update introduces a variation: TheP Warp Door, which cannot be activated until pressing aP Switch. Another variation introduced on the 1.40 update is theKey Door; they can only be opened with akey, another feature introduced in this update.
Warp Doors reappear as course elements inSuper Mario Maker 2 under the Gizmos section and can be used in all game styles, including theSuper Mario 3D World style. Like the previous game, players can knock multiple times on doors in the Course Maker to reveal Weird Mario.
Super Mario Run[edit]
Doors appear in some courses inSuper Mario Run, using their Ghost House appearance fromNew Super Mario Bros. U. They mainly appear in Ghost House courses, where they help the player advance from one room to another. A door also appears inCutting Edge Spire where it takes the player outside the Tower and to the end of the course. The player enters Warp Doors by being on the ground while within their space, rather than through any separate input. The player cannot enter any door that they exited from. In interior areas of a Ghost House, such doors are red instead of green.
In the coursesGhost-Door Deception, there are multiple fake doors and a real door in each room. The player can tell which door is fake by the fact that it shakes periodically. InBoohind Lock and Key, there is one Key Door in every room.
In Remix 10, Warp Doors serve as the goal of courses in Ghost House interiors as well as in Cutting Edge Spire. This also means the door takes on some of the properties of theGoal Pole, in that entering one collects all gravity affected coins and convertsSuper Mushrooms andSuper Stars that are not insidebubbles into five coins.
Super Mario Odyssey[edit]
Doors appear again inSuper Mario Odyssey. One type of door is ared door, and they can only be opened by throwingCappy at it. Another type is one that is colored blue that can only be opened by throwing Cappy onto aScarecrow, thereby forcing Mario to traverse whatever is behind the Warp Door without the aid of Cappy. The third type of door is a pink-colored one, which are frequently used forCrazy Cap stores and theSlots minigame, but can just as easily lead to another area. Last are pink colored doors with a lock on them. The player cannot open them directly, but a nearby NPC will remove the lock and allow access to whatever is inside if Mario talks to them while wearing a specific outfit.
Super Mario Bros. Wonder[edit]
Doors appear once again inSuper Mario Bros. Wonder, acting how they did in previous games. Additionally, an enemy called aNoknok is introduced in this game. This enemy disguises itself as a normal Door, but when the player comes near, it opens up, revealing large teeth and legs. It then chases the player until they jump on it, stunning it and allowing the player to go in the door, either gaining a coin or warping.
Super Paper Mario[edit]
Doors appear frequently inSuper Paper Mario as the main means of travel between areas. These doors usually appear red, with a distinct rainbow-colored border and star symbol, although they appear greenish brown in theWhoa Zone. Some doors can only be entered by usingTippi to reveal them, while others can only be accessed byflipping into 3D.
Seven pairs of different-colored doors appear on top of Flipside Tower known asdimensional doors, which lead to new chapters. A singular eighth dimensional door appears atop Flopside Tower, leading to Castle Bleck.
Additionally, a trio of sentient doors collectively known as theDorguys can be encountered in Chapter 7-2:Underwhere Road.
