Wallops[1] areThwomp relatives that only appear inSuper Mario 3D Land asenemies. These stone creatures look likeWhomps with small battlements on their heads and without arms. Their mouths resemble the mouths ofRhomps and laterGrumblumps. Like Whomps, Wallops seem to be inspired by the Japanese mythological creaturenurikabe, which block the path of travelers, just as Wallops do, but Wallops also bear a striking resemblance toBlocky from theKirby series. When the player is behind or a certain distance away from a Wallop, it stays dormant, with its pupils unlit and its feet retreated into its body. OnceMario orLuigi is in front of a Wallop, it attempts to block his way by mimicking his movements. A Wallop also jumps and slams the ground whenever Mario or Luigijumps, after which the Wallop is unable to move for a few seconds, giving the player a chance to bypass it. Byrunning in a direction and immediately turning the other way, Mario or Luigi can get past a Wallop without jumping. A Wallop can be defeated only from either Mario or Luigiturning into a statue using theStatue Leaf above or below the Wallop when it jumps. Wallops appear inWorld 3-1,World 6-4,World 8-6,Special 3-5,Special 6-1,Special 8-4, andSpecial 8-Crown.

Although no regular Wallops return inSuper Mario 3D World, the game introduces a spiky variant known asWalleyes, which attempt to block the player by constantly moving sideways instead of following them and cannot jump.

Naming[edit]

Wallops' name is a portmanteau of "wall", due to how they look and behave like walls, and "wallop", which means "to make a loud crushing noise" or "a large attack or beating".
