History[edit]

Super Mario World /Super Mario World: Super Mario Advance 2[edit]

Volcano Lotuses appear inSuper Mario World andSuper Mario World: Super Mario Advance 2. They are stationary enemies that periodically spew four small fireballs into the air at a diagonal angle, which proceed to slowly float down on the surrounding area after reaching their highest point. While invulnerable toFire Mario's fireballs, Volcano Lotuses can be defeated by whirlingMario's (orLuigi's)Cape next to them, crushing them with a Body Press asCaped Mario, or eating them with aYoshi.Spin-jumping on them or stepping on them while riding a Yoshi does not harm them, but it makes the player bounce off without taking damage.

The player can encounter Volcano Lotuses in the coursesDonut Plains 1,Tubular, andGroovy.

Super Mario World television series[edit]

A Volcano Lotus, referred to as aFire Plant, appears in the episode "Send in the Clown" of theSuper Mario World television series. It produces the fireballs that Mario, Luigi,Yoshi, andPrincess Toadstool use in a tennis game (in lieu of actual tennis balls).

Super Princess Peach[edit]

Volcano Plants appear inSuper Princess Peach. They also received a Calm counterpart, theC. V. Plant.

Minecraft[edit]

In the Super Mario Mash-Up Pack inMinecraft,Spore Blossoms are replaced with Volcano Lotuses.

Volcano Lotus is a flower creature that looks exactly like the Lava Lotus (p. 91) from Mario 3. Volcano Lotus spews fireballs in four directions at a steady rhythm. Don't panic, use a Cape or fire to defeat them.

Naming[edit]

Etymology[edit]

Page 50 of the Super Mario Bros. Daizukan.
Scan ofSuper Mario Bros. Daizukan, where Volcano Lotus and Panser are recognized as the same subject.

The English name "Volcano Lotus" appears in the ending of the originalSuper Mario World and has been the only English name applied to the enemy. The use of "lotus" is likely in reference toLava Lotus, its underwater relative fromSuper Mario Bros. 3. The enemy is one of several not mentioned in the instruction booklet released with the game. However, in the description forJumping Piranha Plant, it is asserted to be, "a tropical plant version of theVolcano Plant!"[3] The Japanese equivalency for this statement makes no mention of a "Volcano Plant," instead stating it is the tropical variant of normalPiranha Plants,[4] and it is not apparent if the English name used is in reference to the Volcano Lotus enemy specifically. However, other European localizations of the booklet make the same type of assertion present in the English one, and localizations of subsequent media that features Volcano Lotuses have used the same names used in those assertions.

The Japanese name for Volcano Lotus,「ポンキー」(Ponkī), is shared withPanser, a flower enemy fromYume Kōjō: Doki Doki Panic andSuper Mario Bros. 2. They have comparable means of attack and the 1994 character guidebookSuper Mario Bros. Daizukan recognizes them as the same enemy.[5] However,Perfect Ban Mario Character Daijiten, a similar guidebook published the same year, asserts that they are distinct enemies.[6] The English names used on the pages forSuper Mario Bros. 2 andSuper Mario World onMario Portal apply the distinctive names of "Panser" and "Volcano Lotus" despite erroneously applying the same English name to two different enemies that incidentally share the same Japanese name on other pages (e.g., the bee enemyBunbun is listed referred to as "Boom Boom" on Mario Portal).

Names in other languages[edit]

The contemporaneous name for each language is listed first. Subsequent names are listed in chronological order for each language, from oldest to newest, and have the media they are associated with in the "notes" column.
