View plates[1] are switches inSuper Mario 3D Land. They appear only in bonus rooms accessed viaWarp Pipes. These rooms all have a fixed camera, and they contain a configuration ofEmpty Blocks and aStar Medal. The Empty Blocks are laid out in a way that resembles anoptical illusion; if the player tries tojump to where it looks like the Star Medal is, they do not collect it. If the player steps on a view plate, it changes the camera's position in these rooms, which breaks the illusion. The direction the camera moves is different for each level. Only three view plates are used in the game; they are located inWorld 1-1,World 2-1, andWorld 4-4.
