Course map

Urchin Underpass is abattle course that appears inMario Kart 8 Deluxe. The course is based on thestage of the same name fromSplatoon and contains elements from that game, such as green and purpleink splotches scattered throughout the course that decrease vehicles' traction. There are alsoMario Kart elements, such asDash Panels. There are various paths that all loop around to the main area and several bridges.Jellyfish serve as spectators on the course and also appear on the course selection icon.

The music is a variant of the "Splattack!" theme, which is one of the themes that can play during online battles inSplatoon. When there is one minute left in a match, the music changes to a variant of "Now or Never!", which plays in the final minute in Turf War matches inSplatoon. This makes it the third course in the game to have a different music track during the final portion of the match (in this case, when the timer has one minute remaining), afterMount Wario andBig Blue, which play a different part of the music track during the final segment. The music that plays during the final minute is also the only course music in theMario Kart series that does not loop.

Just like inWaluigi Pinball,Hyrule Circuit, andAnimal Crossing, this course uses a uniqueItem Box roulette sound effect. In this case, it is the ability slot roulette sound fromSplatoon.^[1] This makes it the only battle course in the series to have a unique Item Box roulette sound. In Coin Runners and Renegade Roundup,Splatoon's currency,cash, is used in place ofcoins, making it the only battle course in the series not to use coins.

This is the only battle course from theMario Kart games to have kanji in its Japanese name.
This is the only battle course not to feature any spectators from theSuper Mario franchise, as it instead features jellyfish fromSplatoon.
Some background elements appear on the course's walls that are not present inSplatoon, such as graffiti ofTanooki Mario and anexit sign featuring aGoomba.
Despite not appearing in Urchin Underpass inSplatoon,Inkopolis Tower appears in the background, replacing a generic skyscraper present in the original game.
As the originalSplatoon does not have Dutch, Russian, Chinese, Korean, or Portuguese translations,Mario Kart 8 Deluxe was the first game in which Urchin Underpass was named in these languages, eight years prior to the stage's return in the 10.0.0 update forSplatoon 3.
- The Dutch name of the stage was reused forEeltail Alley inSplatoon 3, despite the two being completely different stages. As a result, when Urchin Underpass was added toSplatoon 3 in the 10.0.0 update, it had a new name in Dutch to differentiate it.
