Universal City Studios LLC, doing business asUniversal Pictures and also known as simplyUniversal and formerlyUniversal Studios Inc., is an American film distributor and publisher owned byNBCUniversal, which in turn is owned byComcast.

In 1982, Universal Studios fileda lawsuit againstNintendo, claiming that both thetitular character and scenario of Nintendo's gameDonkey Kong infringed on Universal's rights toKing Kong. However, the district court ruled in favor of Nintendo.

In 2021,Super Nintendo World was opened atUniversal Studios Japan, followed by the opening of another inUniversal Studios Hollywood in 2023 andUniversal Epic Universe in 2025.

Universal is a producer and distributor ofThe Super Mario Bros. Movie, a film released in 2023, as well as its 2026 follow-upThe Super Mario Galaxy Movie. Both films were co-produced by Universal's animation divisionIllumination.
