Undergrunts[1] areenemies inSuper Mario Galaxy andSuper Mario Galaxy 2. They slightly resemble early depictions ofMonty Moles due to their light-colored cheeks and rounded snouts, but have large eyes, toothy grins, and yellow camo-plated helmets, the last of which is the only thing of them visible while they dig.

Super Mario Galaxy[edit]
InSuper Mario Galaxy and itsNintendo Switchport, Undergrunts appear inGusty Garden Galaxy in the mission "The Dirty Tricks of Major Burrows" as uncommon enemies on two planets. Even though the Undergrunts' helmets lack spikes on the top (though they do have spikes on the sides),Mario orLuigi cannot safely jump on them. However, Undergrunts can be defeated byGround Pounding near them, thenspinning them after they have popped out. They give acoin when defeated. Undergrunts also appear inGold Leaf Galaxy's second mission, "Cataquack to the Skies".
Blue Undergrunts on a cannon, calledUndergrunt Gunners, appear in the Gold Leaf Galaxy, theDeep Dark Galaxy and theToy Time Galaxy.
At the end of Gusty Garden Galaxy, there is the boss of this galaxy,Major Burrows, who is the leader of the Undergrunts and can be defeated in almost the same way.
Super Mario Galaxy 2[edit]
Only two normal Undergrunts appear inSuper Mario Galaxy 2 and its Nintendo Switchport on the Undergrunt Planet inBattle Belt Galaxy. They are defeated the same way as in the previous game. However, they give threeStar Bits instead of a coin when defeated. Undergrunt Gunners have now become a much more common enemy species.
In addition, Major Burrows reappears inBoss Blitz Galaxy.

Naming[edit]
Etymology[edit]
"Undergrunt" is a portmanteau between "underground" and "grunt," American slang for infantry soldiers. This followsMajor Burrows being named after a military rank as well.
