Toadsworth is an elderlyToad andPrincess Peach's longtime steward, introduced inSuper Mario Sunshine. Toadsworth acts as caretaker to the princess and other Toads, and is distinguished by his white beard, spectacles, and brown-spotted mushroom cap. He has an English accent and often utters old-fashioned English phrases like "Tally-ho!" and "Pip pip!", most of which made their debut inMario Party 7. Before Toadsworth's introduction inSuper Mario Sunshine, theChancellor fromSuper Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars and from theSuper Mario Kodansha manga played a role very similar to his and even sported a similar appearance.

History[edit]

Super Mario series[edit]

Super Mario Sunshine[edit]

Mario and Toadsworth talking to each other in Super Mario Sunshine

InSuper Mario Sunshine, Toadsworth accompaniesMario, Princess Peach, and an entourage of Toads toIsle Delfino for a vacation. While traveling there, he can be seen daydreaming about the relaxation that he can get at the island as well as about the roller coaster atPinna Park that he is tempted to ride on, resulting in his ignoring Peach when she attempts to warn him of seeinga doppelganger of Mario in the background of the tour video for the island. However, upon arriving on the island's airstrip, he and the other vacationers find the small island covered withgraffiti thanks to the mysterious fiend known asShadow Mario (who eventually frames Mario of ruining the island).

After cleaningDelfino Airstrip, Mario and the group are taken to a courthouse on the mainland, where Mario is put on trial for vandalizing Isle Delfino. Theprosecutor explains that someone who looks like Mario covered the island with graffiti, and that he is to blame. Peach and Toadsworth attempt to object, but they are overruled, and Mario is found guilty. He is then forced to clean the island, as well as find all theShine Sprites.

As Mario attempts to do so to clear his name, Toadsworth at first can be seen simply accompanying Peach around the island. After she is kidnapped by Shadow Mario, he can be found fretting and worrying in various locations. Often, he can be seen reminding Mario to go rescue the princess. After she is rescued, he and the other heroes can be seen finally enjoying the facilities at Isle Delfino as originally planned in the ending credits. Toadsworth presumably returns with the rest of the vacationers to theMushroom Kingdom later on.

New Super Mario Bros.[edit]

Toadsworth from New Super Mario Bros.
Toadsworth's role inNew Super Mario Bros. is being the host of the Toad House

Toadsworth replacesToad as the host ofToad Houses inNew Super Mario Bros. He gives out items to Mario or Luigi by conjuring up aRoulette Block with his wand. Some of the Toad Houses also give out extra lives to the Mario Bros. by having them play a card match up game. However, most of these houses require Mario (or Luigi) to pay 5Star Coins in order to enter.

In the opening cutscene, multiple models of Toadsworth are used to create the illusion of Toads running around in a panic once the thundercloud strikes Peach's Castle.[2]

Mario Golf series[edit]

A statue of Toadsworth appears inMario Golf: Toadstool Tour on Hole 7 ofPeach's Castle Grounds, while Toadsworth himself physically appears in onlyMario Golf: Advance Tour on Peach's Castle. A locker containing a fake moustache with his name on the back can also be found in aMarion Clubhouse locker room.

Mario Kart series[edit]

Mario Kart: Double Dash!![edit]

Award Ceremony

Toadsworth's firstMario Kart appearance is inMario Kart: Double Dash!!, where during the cup's ending ceremony, Toadsworth drives theParade Kart with the two winning players and takes them to their trophy; aside from this, Toadsworth also appears in the textures for the audience inWaluigi Stadium, but not in later iterations of the course.

Mario Kart Arcade GP 2[edit]

InMario Kart Arcade GP 2, large paper cut out figures of Toadsworth, as well asToad andToadette (done in the artwork style of theYoshi's Island series) can be seen near the entrance of the Trick House section ofYoshi Park 2.

Mario & Luigi series[edit]

Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga /Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga + Bowser's Minions[edit]

InMario & Luigi: Superstar Saga and itsremake, Toadsworth briefly appears at the start, where he presentsMario andLuigi with aSuitcase to take on their journey to theBeanbean Kingdom. Later he comes to the Beanbean Kingdom himself (along withPrincess Peach). He also provides the Mario Bros. with a spare dress for the Princess just before they set off to Joke's End to rescue the Princess from Bowletta's clutches, anticipating the possibility that she might have damaged it in an attempt to escape. After a while, he spends his time with Peach in the Mushroom Embassy. He is shown near the end of the game to be good friends withLady Lima.

Toadsworth also appears inMario & Luigi: Partners in Time, playing a larger role in this game than in its predecessor. He is with Mario and Luigi when Princess Peach takes an experimental trip back in time, and is paranoid that something terrible might happen. He eventually faints fromshroomshock due to his excess worrying for the princess, creating a comedic scene of Mario getting arefreshroom for the elderly Toad to feel better. His fears later become justified, as when the time machine returns, aJunior Shrooboid is in it. He is soon attacked by the Shrooboid though Mario and Luigi eventually defeat it. He is still confused when he wakes up and accidentally pushes Mario and Luigi into a time hole. He later teams up with hisyounger self to teach the Bros. new moves (such as theToadsworth Twist,Bros. Ball, etc.) and keepBaby Peach entertained while she stays in the future.Toadsworth is indirectly responsible for sending Mario and Luigi into the past from the start, as he had accidentally knocked Luigi into atime hole, causing Mario to go in after him. Near the end of the game, aShroob character based on Toadsworth calledShroobsworth appears as a common enemy.

Toadsworth returns inMario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story and itsNintendo 3DS remake. He, along with many other Mushroom Kingdom residents, eventually get swallowed up by Bowser afterFawful tricks Bowser into eating theVacuum Shroom. He is then found inPump Works ofBowser's body where he must be rescued by the Mario Bros. Compared to the last game, his role is very small, appearing in various areas, mainly Toad Square. At first, he can often be seen sobbing for the Princess's well being after she is kidnapped by Fawful. After getting over the Princess's well being, and being assured that Mario and Luigi would save her, Toadsworth tries to stop moping and stay strong, and teaches the Mario Bros. aboutbeans. He is shown to be good friends withToadbert as well. Toadbert and Toadsworth are seen having some tea together while waiting forBowser's back to heal.

Mario & Luigi: Dream Team[edit]

Toadsworth as he appears in Mario & Luigi: Dream Team.

Toadsworth appears inMario & Luigi: Dream Team, where he, Mario, Luigi, Princess Peach, and the Toads are invited to Pi'illo Island for sightseeing. His role is even smaller than in the previous games and is mainly used for comic relief (him worrying about Peach and getting annoyed whenDr. Snoozemore falls asleep). Excludingreissues,Dream Team is the last original game in which Toadsworth physically appears.

Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door[edit]

Sprite of Toadsworth
Toadsworth inPaper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door

Toadsworth accompaniesPrincess Peach on her trip toRogueport duringPaper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door. He keeps Princess Peach very close to him, but ends up losing her. WhenMario comes to Rogueport, he meets a frantic Toadsworth who is incredibly worried about the missing Princess. Mario assures Toadsworth that he is going to save her, and Toadsworth spends the remainder of the game in Rogueport'sInn. In the ending, he, Mario, and Princess Peach leave Rogueport on a boat back to the Mushroom Kingdom. Later, after the credits roll, Toadsworth accompanies Princess Peach toMario's house where she invites Mario to venture back to Rogueport. However, Toadsworth will no longer be present at the inn when playing from a save file where theShadow Queen has been defeated.

The secondRDM issue that Mario receives states that Toadsworth had frequently been seen with the cookZess T. This issue of the RDM also reports that Zess T. had said, "What's wrong with spending time with my little Toadle-toes?", referring to Toadsworth.

According toan e-mail, Toadsworth is 60 years old (however, mention of his age is omitted in the English version of theremake).

Mario Tennis series[edit]

Mario Power Tennis /New Play Control! Mario Power Tennis[edit]

Toadsworth can be seen reffing a game inMario Power Tennis

Toadsworth is the umpire inMario Power Tennis and itsNew Play Control! version, where he sits on a high chair and watches characters play. He reminds "not to respond a serve before it bounced once", whenever it is done. During the opening cinematic, Toadsworth is seen at the upper barracks of thePeach Dome with Peach standing by his side during the night of the final match. After Toadsworth announces the remaining contenders, Mario and Luigi against Yoshi and Donkey Kong, Wario and Waluigi in league with Bowser arrive after Yoshi and Donkey Kong fail to show up, which catches Toadsworth off guard. Further turmoil ensues as explosives fly all over the venue, and Toadsworth catches a glimpse of a horde of explosives stowing aboard the underside of Bowser's balloon.

Mario Tennis: Power Tour[edit]

Toadsworth appears inMario Tennis: Power Tour where he, along with Mario, escortClay andAce to the Mushroom Kingdom on theToad Express. He also acts as the umpire as in the previous game for matches taking place in thePeach Dome.

Yakuman DS[edit]

InYakuman DS, Toadsworth is the first-ranked and most difficult opponent. He can also be unlocked by beating him in the game. This is the first game where Toadsworth is a playable character.

Super Mario Stadium series[edit]

Toadsworth prepares to bat in Mario Super Sluggers.
Toadsworth batting inMario Super Sluggers

In theSuper Mario Stadium series, Toadsworth is playable in bothMario Superstar Baseball and its sequel,Mario Super Sluggers. He is onPrincess Peach's team, the "Peach Monarchs". Throughout the two games, Toadsworth uses a larger version of his cane as his bat, unlike the other playable Toad characters who use regular baseball bats. He is a very skillful fielder in both games and has a great pitch, but he does not hit for power, does not run fast, and has low stamina. Despite his good pitching stats, Toadsworth's pitches tend to move slower than what most Toads can pull off.

During the opening cinematic ofMario Super Sluggers, Toadsworth is seen standing by Peach's side, greeting those who are about to arrive at theBaseball Kingdom on a yacht. In Challenge Mode, Toadsworth frequently worried about Peach's kidnapping and he constantly reminds the player to rescue her. He is first seen near a fountain that is later secured by the statue ofDaisy. He watches over the statue, but eventually joins the team when Peach has been rescued. Toadsworth has good chemistry with Peach, Toad, Toadette, Baby Peach, and Pianta, while he has bad chemistry with Goomba, Paragoomba, and Bowser.

Mario Party 7[edit]

Party Cruise from Mario Party 7
Toadsworth as the host inMario Party 7

Toadsworth's only physical appearance in theMario Party series isMario Party 7, where he plays a role during the story. As a token of his appreciation for all that Mario and his friends have done for the Kingdom, Toadsworth organizes an extravagant cruise for them in traditionalMario Party fashion. He is also the host of the boards. However, the cruise is deterred by Bowser, who is furious about his exclusion from the guest list. Toadsworth also runs theDuty Free Shop in this game, where players can buy merchandise, view figures they purchased, listen to sounds, and view records. In theNeon Heights board, a cardboard cut-out of himself appears in the shooting game where if shot, the minigame ends and the player earns no coins.

Though he has no otherMario Party appearances, Toadsworth may have beenplanned to appear inMario Party 8 as his model and two voice clips fromMario Party 7 remain unused in the game's files. Toadsworth also cameos in the Collection mode ofMario Party: The Top 100.

Super Princess Peach[edit]

Toadsworth is a supporting character inSuper Princess Peach, where he is first seen accompanying Princess Peach on her stroll whileBowser'sminions attackPeach's Castle and capture the Mario Bros. As Peach sets off to rescue them, Toadsworth initially objects but then gives her the umbrellaPerry, whom he had bought from a shop before the events of the game, to accompany her. He is also a guitarist for thePeach Hit Five.

Super Smash Bros. series[edit]

Toadsworth in theSuper Smash Bros. series appears only in the form of collectible items. InSuper Smash Bros. Brawl, there are twostickers of Toadsworth, depicting his artworks fromSuper Mario Sunshine andMario & Luigi: Partners in Time and boosting the user's attack power by 10 points and launch power by 5 points, respecitvely.Super Smash Bros. Brawl also has atrophy of Toadsworth, which can be randomly obtained in a single-player mode. Another trophy of Toadsworth appears inSuper Smash Bros. for Wii U, and can be unlocked by defeating eight or more fighters inCruel Smash. A Novice-class supportspirit of Toadsworth appears inSuper Smash Bros. Ultimate, and fighters equipped with it will start battles with aRamblin' Evil Mushroom. The spirit'spuppet fighter isMario on thePrincess Peach's Castle stage.

Fortune Street[edit]

“Oh dear! I think I spent too much gold shopping here. Toadsworth will never let me live this down!”
Toad,Fortune Street

While Toadsworth himself does not appear inFortune Street,Toad provides reference to him throughout the game through his quotations. It is implied that Toadsworth may have some authority over Toad as he appears to be frightened of what Toadsworth would think of his choices at times throughout the game. One of Princess Peach's quotes mentions him as well, where she states that she may need to turn to Toadsworth for financial advice.

Other appearances[edit]

Play Nintendo[edit]

InMario Reads Your Letters episodes 5 and 7 uploaded byPlay Nintendo, Toadsworth's name appears as one of Mario's email contacts on his computer with the subject "Long time no see".[3][4]

Unused appearances[edit]

The Super Mario Bros. Movie[edit]

Toadsworth appears in early concept artwork forThe Super Mario Bros. Movie.[5] TheToad General has a similar role to Toadsworth's in the final film.

General information[edit]

Physical appearance[edit]

Toadsworth is portrayed as an elderly Toad with a tan complexion and a beige cap with brown spots. He has a puffy, white mustache, although if the player looks in a locker inMario Golf: Advance Tour, they find a fake mustache labeled "Toadsworth", jokingly implying that his facial hair isfake. Like other Toads, Toadsworth is short and stout. Despite his age, he is quite energetic. He also speaks with a southern English accent.

He wears a light purple vest with gold buttons that have Toad emblems on them. Layered on top of the vest is a purple, sleeveless jacket that hangs down like a tuxedo with a gold trim. He wears white bottoms underneath and brown, padded shoes like those of all other Toads'. He also wears small, black round glasses and a red bow-tie. He walks around using a stick-like cane that has a brown mushroom cap on top with beige spots on it.

In hisyounger form, he has a brown mustache, small, curious-looking eyebrows, and the same mushroom cap. His attire is more similar to that of other Toads, being a red vest with a golden trim baring his chest, along with his red bow-tie.

Personality[edit]

Toadsworth is a kind character who tries his best to help others, particularly Princess Peach, whom he cares for very deeply, having had a hand in raising her since she was a baby. Toadsworth constantly worries about Peach when she has been kidnapped byBowser, and while Toadsworth is quick to panic and flee with the other Toads when danger arises, he sometimes tries to stay and protect the princess or offer advice to the Mario Bros. InSuper Princess Peach, Toadsworth was originally hesitant to let Peach go to save Mario, out of fear for her safety. Toadsworth is known for addressing many other characters with the "Master" honorific due to his polite nature. Although kind overall, he does have his limits, as after the Shroob threat was over, he privately admits he's glad that his younger counterpart will be off his back, although denies claiming that when Toadsworth the Younger expresses suspicion of his true feelings toward him.

Powers and abilities[edit]

Toadsworth's cane appears to possess magical abilities, as inNew Super Mario Bros., he could create? Blocks with it. In addition, he is shown to be able to drive inMario Kart: Double Dash!!, but he has yet to be seen participating in akart race. He is also skilled at playing mahjong, as seen inYakuman DS, where he is the highest ranked opponent.

Relationships[edit]

Toadsworth and Princess Peach hosting the "finals" at Peach Dome in the opening for Mario Power Tennis
Toadsworth alongside Princess Peach in the intro ofMario Power Tennis

Toadsworth's most established relationship is withPrincess Peach, but there are discrepancies over the relation between them, not unlikeDonkey Kong andCranky Kong. Some sources claim Toadsworth to be the father of Princess Peach,[6] but it has been stated in games and game booklets that Toadsworth is Peach's attaché and thus is subordinate to her. Additionally, inMario Superstar Baseball, when naming all of the players on Peach's team,Lakitu says"And... your grandpa?! Oh, pardon me! Venerable Toadsworth!" While not made entirely clear, Lakitu may have at first been mistaken, but then corrected himself. Peach also addresses him as "Toadsworth" (not as "father" or "grandfather") inSuper Mario Sunshine. Regardless of his position, he cares deeply for the Princess, very much in a fatherly manner, and has taken care of her since she was a baby, similar toKamek andBowser's relationship. They also have good chemistry with each other in theMario Baseball series.
