Mario andBombette visiting the Toad Town Dojo

TheToad Town Dojo is a location inPaper Mario. It is a part ofToad Town whereMario and the gang can practice their fighting skills againstChan (aBuzzy Beetle),Lee (aDuplighost), andThe Master himself, aToad martial artist. Each battle earns a harder challenge and recognition. It acts as a successor to the dojo ofJinx (andJagger) inSuper Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars;Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door gives a similar role to the much largerGlitz Pit (which must be gone through once as part of the game's plot, and can be gone through again afterwards) and thePit of 100 Trials (which is wholly optional).

This is where Mario can earn theFirst,Second,Third andFourth-Degree Cards as well as theDiploma. Despite the fact thatMario can face powerful optional bosses here, no reward (or evenStar Points) is given other than the aforementioned cards and diploma, as the battles are just a challenge.

During his adventure, Mario can talk to three participants of the Dojo who each earned a degree and will give different responses depending on Mario's ranking:

  1. A Toad with yellow-green spots in Toad Town, just outside the Dojo, has a First-Degree Card.
  2. ADryite with an orange tagelmust inDry Dry Outpost has a Second-Degree Card.
  3. Apenguin inShiver City, near the warp pipe, has a Third-Degree Card.

Additionally,Little T., who only appears in a photo on aletter he writes to Mario, is a participant of the Dojo.

Notes[edit]

  • The Japanese characters on the Dojo's calligraphy read 「茸道」, meaning "way of the mushroom", from 「茸」 ("mushroom") and 「道」 ("", or "way"), like 「剣道」 (kendō, "way of the sword"). It is written in thesōsho script and with the writing orientationinverted (from right to left).
  • The music that plays here is called "The Dojo", which may also be heard coming through the floor if Mario stands on the far right of theShroom Grocery's interior.
  • If Mario'sHP drops to zero during any one of the fights, instead of aGame Over, the screen goes back to the Dojo with Mario only having 1 HP.
