Tiny (status effect)
- “Tiny! Attack power has now dropped!”
- —Battle text,Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door
Tiny is a status ailment in thePaper Mario series and theMario & Luigi series.
History[edit]
Paper Mario series[edit]
Paper Mario[edit]
InPaper Mario,Bzzaps! andHammer Bros. have the ability toshrinkMario. When he is shrunken, his Attack Power drops by half. It is indicated by a pink, white, and green circle above Mario. Mario can also shrink enemies using theShrink Stomp Badge and its associated move. Even though enemies are shrunken for between 2 and 4 turns by Shrink Stomp, it ends just before the enemy attacks on the last turn (when a "1" is displayed on the turn marker), so it actually lasts for 1 turn fewer than what the turn marker indicates.
Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door[edit]
The Tiny status effect returns inPaper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door. In this game, it reduces the target's Attack Power by two points. It is indicated by a very small face. Once again, Mario can use Shrink Stomp to shrink a foe.Yoshi can inflict this status on enemies with hisMini-Egg move. TheMini Mr. Mini item can also make enemies Tiny, or Mario and his partners when it is used by enemies.X-Naut PhDs are able to inflict Tiny on Mario and his partners by throwing chemicals, as areBeldam using her magic andBonetail through her breath attack. Hammer Bros. no longer inflict this status with their attacks.
While Tiny, a character's voice and sound effects are raised in pitch. A counterpart status,Huge, was also introduced in this game, which raises the target's Attack Power by two points.
Super Paper Mario[edit]
InSuper Paper Mario, Mario and co. can use thePixlDottie to shrink themselves down to a microscopic size; however, in this game, it does not affect the strength of their attacks. While tiny, the heroes can fit through small passages, enter tinyWarp Pipes and doors, and remain undetected by enemies.
Mario & Luigi series[edit]
Mario & Luigi: Dream Team[edit]
This status effect reappears inMario & Luigi: Dream Team, but referred to asMini, replacing thepoison status effect from previousMario & Luigi games.Spritzblooms,Viruses,Krubbishes,Antasmen andShy Guy Airtubs DX are some of the enemies that can give this status effect to Mario and Luigi.
While a Bro is mini, their POW and DEF are reduced, and neitherBros. Attacks orLuiginary Attacks can be used. In the case of Bros. Attacks, this also means the other Bro cannot use them even if they are not mini. Note that Mini stacks withPOW-Down andDEF-Down. The former case reduces the damage that a Bro can deal severely, while the latter can increase the damage of any oncoming attack to values that could inflict a one-hit KO.
Mario & Luigi: Paper Jam[edit]
- “Oh ho! This one's a real gas! It'll shrink you down to micro size!”
- —Ludwig von Koopa,Mario & Luigi: Paper Jam
The Tiny status effect reappears inMario & Luigi: Paper Jam, but it can only be inflicted on Mario, Luigi, andPaper Mario as the effect of the secondBattle Card fromLudwig andLarry in their second battle, which costs 4 darkStar Points to use.
It functions mostly the same as it did inDream Team, lowering POW and DEF, and disabling Bros. Attacks andTrio Attacks. The only exception is that there's no indicator displayed above each inflicted Bro as long as they are tiny, unlike all other status effects.
Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga + Bowser's Minions[edit]
In theMinion Quest: The Search for Bowser mode ofMario & Luigi: Superstar Saga + Bowser's Minions, theLightningCaptain Command can shrink the entire opposing squad, at which point all their stats will drop and will be unable to useSpecial Skills.
Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story + Bowser Jr.'s Journey[edit]
The Lightning command returns with the same effects in theBowser Jr.'s Journey mode ofMario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story + Bowser Jr.'s Journey. During the levelBe Leery of Lightning, all allies will remain small for the entire level.
