- “Wouldyou do me a favor and get thatPower Star back from theWhomp King at the top of this hill?”
- —Bob-omb Buddy,Super Mario Galaxy 2
TheThrowback Galaxy is agalaxy inWorld 6 fromSuper Mario Galaxy 2 and itsNintendo Switchport which is a redesignedWhomp's Fortress fromSuper Mario 64. The music is a jazzy arrangement of the originalSuper Mario 64 Main Theme, as the original version was also played on Whomp's Fortress. Although the course is generally identical, a few minor changes have been made.
The clouds in the background are notably darker than the original Whomp's Fortress, andblack holes were added below the course. New enemies have been added, such asParagoombas,Skeeters and aWiggler. Other enemies seen first in the original game also return, likePiranha Plants,Thwomps,Whomps, andBomps. SomeBob-omb Buddies also appear in the galaxy, and even mention thatMario seems familiar, a reference to his earlier visit to Whomp's Fortress inSuper Mario 64 and its remake. AWhomp is found at the top of the fortress, and defeating it will open an area where theWhomp King is found. AComet Medal, notes (released from breaking a crate, playing theSuper Mario Bros. underground theme) and a bonus planet featuring Piranha Plants can be found in the stage too. SeveralCloud Flowers also appear in the galaxy's second mission.
Planets[edit]
Whomp's Fortress (Starting Planet)[edit]
A planet almost identical toWhomp's Fortress inSuper Mario 64. However, the floating islands that containedRed Coins and the area where theStar Switch mission is done inSuper Mario 64 DS are no longer found. The cannon used to destroy two walls ina mission in the previous games is replaced with a Sling Star, along with the points in the walls already being destroyed. There are a lot of enemies, such as Thwomps and Piranha Plants, on this planet, and at the top, Mario can defeat a Whomp to access a vertical tunnel which will take him to the underside of the planet where theWhomp King is fought.
Bonus Planet[edit]
There is ateleporter near the base of Whomp's Fortress that leads to the Bonus Planet, which is inhabited by multiplePiranha Plants. IfMario orLuigi is able to defeat them all within the time limit, they receive three1-Up Mushrooms.
During the second mission, the player can use aCloud Flower to get to the Bonus Planet, which is only a short distance away from the main planet. However, the player has used all three of their clouds at this point, so they are not able to get back again.

Notes[edit]
- TheBob-omb Buddy who requests that Mario gets the Power Star back from theWhomp King inReturn of the Whomp King states that the Whomp King is at the top of the fortress. This is not true, as the Whomp King is fought at the bottom of the planet, while one of hisWhomp minions is at the top instead.
- When theWhomp King is defeated inSuper Mario Galaxy 2, he will explode and Mario will be standing on the ground, while inSuper Mario 64, Mario will still be in the air after the Whomp King is defeated.
