TheTanooki Suit, orTanooki Costume,[1] is a fairly uncommon item found inSuper Mario Bros. 3 and its subsequent remakes inSuper Mario All-Stars andSuper Mario Advance 4: Super Mario Bros. 3 that transformsMario intoTanooki Mario. It is based onbake-danuki, Japanese mythological creatures inspired byJapanese raccoon dogs (tanuki) who can use leaves to shapeshift and cause chaos. The suit is an add-on to theRaccoon form that allows Mario orLuigi to temporarily turn into astatue and become immune to enemies and obstacles, in addition toflying and attacking enemies with tail swipes.
According toShigeru Miyamoto in theSuper Mario Bros. 3 entry of the 25th AnniversarySuper Mario History Booklet, he was aware that most players outside Japan would be overall confused with the Tanooki Suit and the transformation, but he left it in because he was too excited to remove it.[2]
While Tanooki Mario returns inSuper Mario 3D Land andSuper Mario 3D World, the Raccoon form and Tanooki Suit item do not. Instead,Super andStatue Leaves turn Mario into Tanooki Mario.

Super Mario Bros. 3 /Super Mario Advance 4: Super Mario Bros. 3[edit]
First found in either a blocked-offGiant LandToad's House orWorld 4-5, the suit transformsMario orLuigi intoTanooki Mario or Tanooki Luigi, respectively. The suit grants the same abilities as theSuper Leaf, with the added ability ofturning into a statue when the player holds and presses

Mario retains theP-Wing's infinite flight if he grabs a Tanooki Suit while using one. Also,Super Mario Advance 4: Super Mario Bros. 3 adds new utilities to this form that are seen in severalWorld-e levels: its Statue form can revealVanishing Blocks (found inA Sky-High Adventure) and breakRock Blocks (found in A Sky-High Adventure andPuzzling Pipe Maze).
