Tanooki is a character briefly appearing in theSuper Mario Bros. comic "Tanooki Suits Me." His name is a reference to theTanooki Suit, and was the very first tailor to set up shop in theMushroom Kingdom, whose specialty was to create Tanooki Suits.
Tanooki is first mentioned by an elderly man who noticesMario in a Tanooki Suit, commenting that it has been years that he has seen such a fine example of Tanooki-tailoring. He goes on to explain that Tanooki was the first tailor of the Mushroom Kingdom and the creator of the Tanooki Suit, whose trademark was to sew a tail on the back of every suit he made. The suits became very popular, with everyone wanting a Tanooki Suit, as each had special powers, such as cleaning one's house and turning one into astatue. However, Tanooki grew tired of trying to keep up with the demand for Tanooki Suits, and, one day, closed his shop and disappeared. The man tells Mario to take care of his Tanooki Suit, as a genuine one is rare nowadays.
