Thetail attack[1][2][3], also captialized asTail Attack[4], is a move that can be performed byRaccoon Mario andTanooki Mario. As its name suggests, the attack involves using the forms' tail to smack enemies or objects, hitting anything close by at waist-height.Cape Mario is capable of a similar attack, and it is the first example of aspinning attack in theSuper Mario franchise.

Super Mario series[edit]
Super Mario Bros. 3[edit]
InSuper Mario Bros. 3, the tail attack can be performed by both Raccoon Mario and Tanooki Mario by pressing the button. It can defeat many enemies automatically, though it causes certain shelled enemies likeKoopa Troopas to flip upside down in their shells, while many stronger enemies likeThwomps andDry Bones are immune to it completely. Additionally, it can be used to hitBricks and? Blocks from the side. Tanooki Mario can turn intoStatue Mario by performing the move whilecrouching.
Super Mario 3D Land[edit]
InSuper Mario 3D Land, Tanooki Mario and derived forms can use the move, as well as various enemies that have been affected by theSuper Leaf's power, such asTail Goombas,Big Tail Goombas,Tail Boos,Tail Bullet Bills, andTail Bowsers. Gear-like objects calledTail Wheels can be activated by using the move on them repeatedly. Statue Mario is no longer activated with it, instead being activated by performing aGround Pound after collecting aStatue Leaf. Instead, performing a tail attack while ducking causes him to spin while moving forward, similar to aroll.
New Super Mario Bros. 2[edit]
InNew Super Mario Bros. 2, Raccoon Mario can use the move with the same properties as inSuper Mario Bros. 3.
Super Mario 3D World[edit]
InSuper Mario 3D World, Tanooki Mario can again use the move, though it is predominantly replaced byCat Mario's similar scratch attack.
Super Mario Maker series[edit]
InSuper Mario Maker,Super Mario Maker for Nintendo 3DS, andSuper Mario Maker 2 Raccoon Mario can use the tail attack in theSuper Mario Bros. 3 style, acting the same as that game.
Paper Mario series[edit]
InPaper Mario: Sticker Star,Paper Mario: Color Splash, andPaper Mario: The Origami King, theTail is a usable item that allows a tail attack to be performed as. In the former two games, it can reflect enemy projectiles if timed well. In the latter, it is an offensive move that deals damage to enemies in a 2x2 radius.

InMario & Luigi: Paper Jam, Big Tail Goombas can use their tails as a method of attack against Mario, Luigi, andPaper Mario.
Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga + Bowser's Minions[edit]
InMinion Quest: The Search for Bowser inMario & Luigi: Superstar Saga + Bowser's Minions, Big Tail Goombas and Tail Boos use a tail attack as part of theirSpecial Skill, Spin Cycle.
Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story + Bowser Jr.'s Journey[edit]
InBowser Jr.'s Journey inMario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story + Bowser Jr.'s Journey, Big Tail Goombas and Tail Boos once again use Spin Cycle.
Mario Kart series[edit]
The tail attack appears in theMario Kart series starting withMario Kart 7. Using aSuper Leaf gives the user's vehicle a tail that can be swiped by pressing the item button again, disappearing after several moments.
The Super Mario Bros. Movie[edit]
InThe Super Mario Bros. Movie, Tanooki Mario uses a tail attack twice. First, he knocks aKoopa Troopa out of aKoopa Clown Car-like vehicle while flying toBowser's Castle. Second, he tail attacks aBomber Bill's eye as the last of many attempts to stop the Bomber Bill from destroying theMushroom Kingdom by getting it to attack Mario. The tail attack makes the Bomber Bill flinch and come to a stop just as it reachesPeach's Castle, at which point it begins to pursue Mario.
Unused appearances[edit]
The tail attack was considered for the Raccoon form's appearance as the Super Leaf item's effect inSuper Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS andSuper Smash Bros. for Wii U, but ended up not being used in the final game.[5]
