Swallowing, oreating, appears in theSuper Mario franchise as one ofYoshi's most common moves. In mostYoshi games starting withSuper Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island, after catching an enemy with his tongue and swallowing, Yoshi can turn it into anegg. He can also spit an enemy back out, and it defeats another enemy upon contact. In theSuper Smash Bros. series, this move is calledEgg Lay, and the spitting move is used for Yoshi's throws.
Swallowing inSuper Mario Sunshine is used to eatfruit to refuel aYoshi's stomach. Yoshi also eats fruit in other games, such asSuper Mario World andNew Super Mario Bros. Wii. InSuper Mario World, when aBaby Yoshi eats fiveberries, it becomes an adult Yoshi, and eating ten fruits makes Yoshi lay an egg holding a power-up. InNew Super Mario Bros. Wii,New Super Mario Bros. U,New Super Luigi U, andNew Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe, only five fruits are needed to have Yoshi produce a power-up.
