Super Stars (also written asSuperstars),^[1][2] originally referred to asStarmen and alternatively referred to asStar Bonuses,^[3]Invincible Starmen,^[4]Invincibility Stars,^[5]Stars,^[6][7] orStar-Men,^[8] are recurring items in theSuper Mario franchise, especially theSuper Mario series and theMario Kart series. Super Stars are generally depicted as five-pointed stars with beady eyes, usually yellow in color. If the player gets a Star, they becomeinvincible. The user becomes temporarily invulnerable to all damage, being able to defeat almost any enemy. However, hazards that would be fatal regardless of power-ups (lava,poison,pits,time running out, getting crushed, etc.) still defeat the user, even with the Super Star. In addition, thesplotchy goop in theBowser's Fury mode inSuper Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury causes the player to lose their invincibility if touched while also taking damage, as if they took damage without the power-up.^[9] The projectiles or enemies that come into contact with the user of the Star while it is activated are destroyed, damaged, or knocked off the screen (depending on the type of enemy and what game it is). The Star also increases the speed of the user substantially (again, depending on the game). In most games sinceSuper Mario World, if the player collides with and defeats a sequence of enemies while invincible, the player gets anextra life. Thepoint chain is usually 200 - 400 - 800 - 1,000 - 2,000 - 4,000 - 8,000 - 1UP - 1UP - 1UP... As the player continues defeating enemies, the player keeps getting extra lives for each additional enemy defeated until the Star's power wears off and they are no longer invulnerable. Touching another Star while already invincible prolongs the effect and allows the player to continue getting more lives.

Super Mario series[edit]

Super Mario Bros. /Super Mario Bros.: The Lost Levels[edit]

Starmen are uncommon items that first appear inSuper Mario Bros. and return with the same role inSuper Mario Bros.: The Lost Levels. They are first seen inWorld 1-1 of the former game. WhenMario orLuigi gets a Starman, he becomes invincible to any enemy or object exceptpits or time running out, and theinvincibility theme plays. The Starman allows for enemies to be destroyed along the way. Invincibility is indicated by Mario's flashing sprites and the Starman theme, which replaces the current soundtrack. After several seconds, the effects of the item wear off.

Yume Kōjō: Doki Doki Panic /Super Mario Bros. 2[edit]

Starmen return inYume Kōjō: Doki Doki Panic andSuper Mario Bros. 2. The player can obtain one by collecting fivecherries in a level. Starmen spawn from the bottom of the screen before traveling upward in a zigzag pattern but otherwise work the same as before.

Super Mario Bros. 3[edit]

Starmen inSuper Mario Bros. 3 are very similar to their appearance inSuper Mario Bros., except they also allow for faster running. If Mario jumps when he is notSmall Mario, he does flips in the air. This game also introduces theContinuous Starman^[10][11] chain, where certain ? Blocks contain stars instead of coins if the player character is invincible while hitting them.World 7-7 requires the player to use Starmen to walk on top of theMunchers without taking damage. A Starman is one of thegoal icons, and achieving three in a row earns the playerextra lives.

Super Mario Land[edit]

Stars return inSuper Mario Land, with the same effects as before, although the musical theme is different than before; it is composed of two loops of an excerpt from the "Galop infernal" fromOrpheus in the Underworld byJacques Offenbach, a tune most commonly associated with thecan-can. Combos from defeating successive enemies behave in an unusual way compared to mostSuper Mario games; the next enemy in the combo must be defeated relatively quickly after the previous enemy, a trait shared withstomping inSuper Mario Land. The maximum combo that can be obtained from a Star is 4000 points, with 4000 additional points being rewarded for every successive enemy in the combo. The only level with a formation of enemies dense enough to get a 4000-point combo isWorld 4-3.

Super Mario World[edit]

Super Stars are items found mostly inRoulette Blocks inSuper Mario World. From this appearance onward, defeating enemies in succession results in increasing point values for successive enemies, eventually gainingextra lives after achieving 8,000 points. TheStar World theme is also a slowed-down variation of the Super Star theme.

Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins[edit]

Stars return inSuper Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins. They no longer bounce upon being released from a block, and one can alternatively received from defeating 100 enemies. UnlikeSuper Mario World, Mario begins receiving extra lives from the fifth enemy defeated onwards. The Super Star theme is completetly different but is not the same as the one inSuper Mario Land, utilizing the same recurring leitmotif as most songs inSuper Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins.

New Super Mario Bros.[edit]

Starmen retain their usual function inNew Super Mario Bros., with the theme using the arrangement fromSuper Mario 64. They are much rarer and sometimes appear in hidden ? Blocks. Starmen are not found inToad Houses and are the only item that cannot be aStored Item. The star can be found inWorlds 1-1,1-2,4-6,4-Castle,6-2,7-3,8-4, and8-7. In certain levels, using a Starman causes a trail ofBlue Coins to spawn behind the player. In the Mario vs. Luigi mode, a Starman may potentially appear when Mario or Luigi collects eightcoins, and a player is more likely to obtain a Starman if they are losing; the mode also features theBig Star variation, which have to be collected by Mario and Luigi.

Super Mario Galaxy /Super Mario Galaxy 2[edit]

Super Stars are replaced byRainbow Stars inSuper Mario Galaxy andSuper Mario Galaxy 2, having the same function and having the same invincibility theme associated with it.

New Super Mario Bros. Wii[edit]

Stars are mostly found throughRoulette Blocks or just regular? Blocks inNew Super Mario Bros. Wii. Their only major differences is lighting up dark areas and the corresponding theme having a different arrangement. Stars can now be obtained from Toad Houses and stored in the overworld inventory. Multiplayer allows an invincible player to grab another to pass the power of invincibility to them.

Super Mario 3D Land[edit]

Super Stars are more common inSuper Mario 3D Land than previous appearances. Aside from their function in the three-dimensional playing field, Super Stars function the same as before, but extra lives can be earned after the fifth enemy onward. As the power-up starts wearing off, the corresponding theme speeds up, similar to the Rainbow Stars in theSuper Mario Galaxy games, but speeds up in the second bar rather than the fifth bar like inSuper Mario Galaxy, though theE3 2011 demo version had it the same as in the latter.

New Super Mario Bros. 2[edit]

Super Stars reappear inNew Super Mario Bros. 2, functioning like in earlier two-dimensional installments. A Super Star can only appear in the item storage by collecting it from theWorld Star Toad House.

New Super Mario Bros. U /New Super Luigi U /New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe[edit]

Super Stars return inNew Super Mario Bros. U,New Super Luigi U, andtheir port, working like they do inNew Super Mario Bros. Wii.

Super Mario 3D World /Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury[edit]

Super Stars reappear inSuper Mario 3D World andits port. They are mostly based on their appearance inSuper Mario 3D Land, since the associated theme plays faster upon reaching the second bar. Like inNew Super Mario Bros. Wii, the effects of a Super Star can be passed on to other players in multiplayer. Unlike before, the chain of points restarts after obtaining an extra life.

In theBowser's Fury campaign ofSuper Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury, Super Stars can be obtained randomly upon collecting 100 coins, like with other power-ups.

Super Mario Maker series[edit]

Super Stars are a placeable course element inSuper Mario Maker,its port, andSuper Mario Maker 2. They function no differently than in most 2D installments.

Super Mario Run[edit]

Super Stars reappear inSuper Mario Run, following much of the same rules for appearances and moving as before. In this game, Super Stars still grant invincibility, but have the additional effect of magnetizing nearby coins andBonus Medals to the user.Black Coins andRed Coins are resistant to this force. The Black Coins only shake left to right. In Toad Rally, collecting a Super Star will also start Coin Rush mode, with the meter glowing white until the effects wear off. In Remix 10, while Coin Rush is not an element, Super Stars grant an effect similar to it. The screen dims, more coins start to appear, defeating enemies is worth additional coins, ? Blocks that drop coins drop more coins, and ? Blocks that drop power-ups drop three power-ups instead of one. In Remix 10, every 100 coins the player collects resets the coin counter and gives them abubbled power-up. If the player isSuper, then a Super Star is provided.

Super Stars do not necessarily have to appear from blocks or from Red Coins. Certain courses, such asFollow That Shell! andPiranha Plant Field, have Super Stars bouncing around on their own for the player to collect.

The courseLakitu's Revenge has frequent Super Stars, such that the player can be invincible for most of the course.

There is aSuper Star Statue item in the Kingdom Builder mode, The8-bit Super Star Trim and8-bit Super Star Statue are other Kingdom Builder items that use the Super Star's appearance fromSuper Mario Bros. Three Super Stars are depicted on the top ofPrincess Peach's Cake.

Super Mario Bros. 35[edit]

Super Stars appeared inSuper Mario Bros. 35, working mostly like inSuper Mario Bros., though the Item Roulette had a chance of granting the player a Super Star.

Super Mario Bros. Wonder[edit]

Super Stars are common inSuper Mario Bros. Wonder. They can attract coins over, retaining the ability fromSuper Mario Run. In multiplayer, the ability to pass a Super Star's effects to other players has also been retained. Instead of a scoring system, ratings appear in the order of "Good", "Great", "Super", "Fantastic", "Excellent", "Incredible", and "Wonderful"; from then on, each consecutive defeat awards the player a 1-Up.

Starmen also make several appearances throughout the threeSuper Mario animated cartoon series produced byDIC Entertainment.

InThe Super Mario Bros. Super Show!, they do not grant invincibility; they instead can power-up Mario and Luigi intoFire Mario and Fire Luigi, giving them increased strength and the ability to shootfireballs. The person wielding the Starman, often Mario, usually recites, "Starman, star bright, give me pasta power, give me pasta might!", before powering up. This power lasts until either a fair bit of time elapsed, or they are attacked by an enemy. However,Fire Flowers, along with other powerful artifacts such asmagic doodads, can also be used in lieu of Starmen in order to power-up. In "Toad Warriors",Toad manages to transform into theToad Warrior by using a Starman, although in the next episode, "The Fire of Hercufleas", he transforms intoSuper Toad by using a Fire Flower.

Starmen continue appearing intoThe Adventures of Super Mario Bros. 3 andSuper Mario World. Their role is more consistent with the games, granting only temporary invincibility. Unlike the Cape Feather and Fire Flower, both Mario and Luigi are seen using the Super Star inSuper Mario World: Luigi collects one to dispose of theCaterpillars in "Party Line", and Mario collects one from one of the "dizzy stars" that appear after he is knocked out by anevil dinosaur in the same episode. Mario also collects one when he escapesNeon Castle with Yoshi in "The Yoshi Shuffle".

Mario's Egg Catch[edit]

InMario's Egg Catch, a Starman occasionally appears in the lower right corner of the screen. When collected, Mario gains 5 points.

Super Mario-kun[edit]

Involume 6 ofSuper Mario-kun, while transversingTubular,Balloon Mario comes across twoPassin' Chucks that manage to pop him and making him fall straight into a pipe. Mario reemerges from the pipe, which is actually a sentientPipe Cannon, with aSuper Star, and is shot at full speed against the Passin' Chucks, defeating them.

Mario Kart series[edit]

Stars are one of six items to appear in allMario Kart games, serving as a rare item that only low-ranking drivers can get. Stars make the player who uses it invincible to all attacks and able to knock over items, course obstacles and other drivers, which in some games makes the player lose their current items. The player receives a speed boost increasing their average speed by 1/3 and is able to cross off-road terrain without losing any speed (Super Mario Kart andMario Kart: Super Circuit are exceptions, as the item doubles their speed in those games). The invincibility lasts for different time periods depending on the game: 6.13 seconds forSuper Mario Kart, 10.13 seconds forMario Kart 64, 6.3 seconds forMario Kart: Super Circuit, 7.6 seconds forMario Kart: Double Dash!!, 7.46 seconds forMario Kart DS, 7.42 seconds forMario Kart Wii, 7.46 seconds forMario Kart 7, and 7.54 seconds forMario Kart 8 andMario Kart 8 Deluxe.^[12]

In some places, Stars can be obtained through specialItem Boxes. One is inDK Pass, where there is an Item Box on top of a hill. If the player, in any position, touches said Item Box, the player may receive a Star,Triple Mushrooms,a single Mushroom, or, very rarely, a singleRed Shell. The same rule applies forChain Chomp Wheel, except that Red Shells and Triple Mushrooms are absent.

Starting inMario Kart Double Dash!!, the player can steal Balloons andShine Sprites inBattle Mode when hitting people with the Star in the applicable modes. FromMario Kart Wii onwards, due to the introduction of Coin Runners, Coins can also be stolen in the same way.

The Star is also the emblem of theStar Cup in everyMario Kart game to date. Also, it is obtainable as an uncommon item from 2nd to 8th place inMario Kart 64, 6th to 8th place inMario Kart: Double Dash!! (approximate positions used due to there not being a known item probability table forDouble Dash!! orSuper Circuit), and 5th to 8th place inMario Kart DS andMario Kart 7, as well as 7th to 12th place inMario Kart Wii.

InMario Kart Wii, theSugarscoot has a star emblem on its spare tire on the rear. In this game, when characters acquire this item, their voice will echo, with the exception ofRosalina, whose voice will echo even more, as her voice already echoes. Some of theleaf piles onMaple Treeway, including in the section with theWigglers and the section before thefinish line also have the potential to drop Stars when driven through. Players under the effects of theMega Mushroom can get hit by this item. Up to three Stars can be in play at a time.

InMario Kart 7, all courses that have obstacles that drop items when broken (like thejars onShy Guy Bazaar) have the potential to drop a Star when they do so.

A Star inMario Kart Arcade GP DX

InMario Kart Arcade GP,Mario Kart Arcade GP 2, andMario Kart Arcade GP DX, the Super Star appears again.

InMario Kart 8 andMario Kart 8 Deluxe, thePrincess Peach statue inToad Harbor can be seen holding a Star in its raised right hand. Additionally, inMario Kart 8 Deluxe, if the player has purchased theBooster Course Pass DLC or currently has aNintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack membership, a small icon of a Star can be seen next to the version number on the game's title screen.

Unlike in previous installments, Stars themselves do not appear as collectible Item Box items in regular single-player races inMario Kart Tour. Instead, getting aFrenzy has the same effects as using a Star, with the same invincibility music fromMario Kart 8 playing, while its icon appears on-screen if another racer behind the player is in Frenzy mode. Stars found in Item Boxes appear in multiplayer mode when the rules have less than three item slots, as frenzies are unobtainable then. Stars are also found in certain challenges, first found in the Break Item Boxes challenge of theTokyo Tour'sWendy Cup. Once obtained, Stars can be activated by tapping the screen, making the player temporarily invincible. Additionally, if the player is about to receive a High-End driver from apipe, a Star appears briefly on-screen.

InMario Kart World, Stars can be found bouncing along the ground in the Free Roam mode. A sound effect also plays when it is about to run out. It received a slight redesign in this game, as it is more rainbow-colored overall.Mario Kart World additionally features many elements with Super Star imagery:

• TheSuper Star Metal Parts sponsor is named after Super Stars, and features them in its logo;
• A few vehicles feature Super Star designs, namely theChargin' Truck (by way of its Super Star Metal Parts decal), and the orange and pink variants of theCute Scoot;
• Several types ofDash Food feature elements designed after Super Star, namely:
  • The medium burger, which features a Super Star topper;
  • The small ice cream cone, which is topped with a Super Star-shaped cookie;
  • All three fruit salads, which feature starfruits with eyes, reminiscent of Super Stars;
  • The small and large cakes, which both feature a Super Star-shaped cookie.
• Twentystickers depict Super Stars:
  • Two are themed after Super Star Metal Parts;
  • One is based on the Star Cup emblem;
  • Two are based on the design of the orange Cute Scoot;
  • Three are based on the small cake, small ice cream, and medium fruit salad Dash Foods, respectively;
  • One depicts it in a graffiti style;
  • One depicts the actual words "Super Star" in a graffiti style;
  • One depicts it on a highway shield with the words "Super Star" on it;
  • One depicts it with a sombrero-like pattern, alongside the word "Wario";
  • One depicts it on a cyan background with the words "Crown Bridge" on it
  • One depicts it engraved on a gold medal;
  • One depicts it in a pentagonal emblem;

Yoshi's Safari[edit]

Super Stars appear inYoshi's Safari. They are dropped fromFlying ? Blocks or the green type during boss fights only. A Super Star allows Yoshi to defeat any enemies on contact temporarily, similarly to its role in other appearances. Collecting a Super Star earns the player 2,000 bonus points.

Mario's Time Machine[edit]

Several Super Stars appear as statues inBowser's Museum inMario's Time Machine, and are usable as platforms to reach some doors.

Wario Land: Super Mario Land 3[edit]

Stars appear inWario Land: Super Mario Land 3. It is functionally identical to those used in theSuper Mario series but has a different invincibility theme, following the same vein as theSuper Mario Land games.

Yoshi's Island series[edit]

Super Stars are rare power-ups in the first two installments of theYoshi's Island series:Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island (as well as itsremake) andYoshi's Island DS. Super Stars work completely different than before, turningBaby Mario intoSuperstar Mario andYoshi into a giantYoshi's Egg. Super Stars inYoshi's Island DS can be found in the levelsBaby Mario and Baby Peach: Dynamic Duo,Castle of Big Guy the Stilted,Superhard Acrobatics! andYoshi's Island Easter Eggs.

Though Super Stars are not inYoshi's New Island, a similar item namedYoshi Star appears. Yoshi Stars are featured in two colors, and both turn Yoshi intoSuper Yoshi. The yellow ones make him invincible and let him run on walls and ceilings, while the red ones let him blast through enemies and walls for a brief time. Both forms can be prolonged by grabbing more Yoshi Stars of the same color.

Mario's FUNdamentals[edit]

Super Stars are depicted on dominoes numbered 1 within the Dominoes game ofMario's FUNdamentals.

Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars[edit]

Stars are rare items withinSuper Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars. They can defeat enemies on the overworld and still earn Mario someexperience points. The Star is also used in theTriple MoveStarry Shell Spike in theremake, wherePrincess Peach tosses one out asBowser retreats into his shell and is kicked into the Star byMario, temporarily turning into Invincible Bowser and dealing damage to all enemies in the fight.

Game & Watch Gallery series[edit]

Super Stars appear in some of the Modern remakes ofGame & Watch games included in theGame & Watch Gallery series. In the Modern version ofFire inGame & Watch Gallery, a Super Star may emerge from aYoshi Egg within the burningMushroom Castle, being worth fivepoints when collected. InGame & Watch Gallery 2's Modern version ofParachute, a Super Star appears from one of the three Yoshi Eggs that come from theflying ship every 100 points. Just like inGame & Watch Gallery, collecting a Super Star is worth five points. In the game's Modern version ofHelmet, a Super Star appears if the player collects 50 coins without getting a miss, and obtaining it is worth at least 20 points. In the Modern version ofTurtle Bridge inGame & Watch Gallery 3, a Super Star is one of the itemsToad must deliver toPrincess Peach if he continues delivering amelon without losing a life, and he receives 15 points upon doing so.

Stars appear in every game of theSuper Smash Bros. series. If players touch a Star, they will become invincible, allowing them to attack foes, without worrying about damage. However, unlike with the actualSuper Mario games, players will not be able to hurt their opponents just by touching them. In the first twoSuper Smash Bros. games, the Super Star has a completely unique arrangement of its theme played, though fromSuper Smash Bros. Brawl onwards, the item uses its theme fromSuper Mario Bros. instead.

A Star also appears as asticker inSuper Smash Bros. Brawl, as well as an Ace-class supportspirit inSuper Smash Bros. Ultimate granting the fighter temporary invincibility if they land the first attack in battle.

Mario Tennis series[edit]

Stars appear in theBowser Stage fromMario Tennis. They are also theStar Cup and Final Cup emblem inMario Power Tennis andMario Tennis Open, respectively.Mario Tennis Open features a usable tennis racket, uniform, wrist bands, and shoes themed after Stars forMiis to use.

Mario Bros. (Game Boy Advance)[edit]

Super Stars can hatch fromEggs during only theMario Bros. Battle 2-player mode of theMario Bros. remake for theGame Boy Advance.

Nintendo Puzzle Collection[edit]

Super Stars are depicted on flags held byGoomba andKoopa Troopa audience members at the start of a Versus Mode match inNintendo Puzzle Collection version ofYoshi no Cookie.

Mario Golf series[edit]

Super Stars have made varying appearances in theMario Golf series. InMario Golf: Toadstool Tour, Super Stars are obstacles appearing only onPeach's Castle Grounds, where they also appear as tee markers. InMario Golf: Advance Tour, Super Stars appear on certain Star Courses, and whenever one is hit, the player becomes "invincible" against whatever their current ball lie is, and the ball acts as if it were on the optimum playing surface. InMario Golf: World Tour, when Mario or Gold Mario gets aBirdie or better in this game, his post-hole animation involves him grabbing a Star and running while invincible and then striking a pose. Also, when he gets anEagle in this game, he grabs a star, defeats a few enemies, and jumps. This item is also used as tee markers in theMario's Star course. A clothing set, golf ball, and set of golf clubs are designed based on the item, and are available for Miis to use. InMario Golf: Super Rush,Mario uses the Super Star to transform into Rainbow Mario during his special shot, the Super Star Strike. Additionally, Super Stars are used during the Super Star Rush event in the Battle Golf mode.

Mario & Luigi series[edit]

Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story /Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story + Bowser Jr.'s Journey[edit]

The Super Star is featured as theStar Rank withinMario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story andits remake, retaining this purpose in all later installment. For one of his attacks,Bowser Memory M uses a pixelated Super Star, functioning like they do in 2D games of theSuper Mario series.

Mario & Luigi: Dream Team[edit]

Super Stars are part of theStar Rocket attack in theMad Skillathon game inMario & Luigi: Dream Team. They do not appear until just after the 150th small star. Collecting a Super Star allows Mario and Luigi to speed up and destroydamage balloons temporarily, andDreamy Mario and his clones become invincible during the chase scenes from a Super Star.

Mario & Luigi: Paper Jam[edit]

Only one Super Star appears inMario & Luigi: Paper Jam in the form of aPapercraft item. Before the fight with Papercraft King Boo, the trio upon Papercraft Yoshi can find a floating Super Star and by using its tongue, they can pull it in and use it. While under the effects of the Super Star, Papercraft Yoshi can defeat enemies instantly, but it automatically wears off after all nearby Papercraft Goombas are defeated. TheNew Super Mario Bros. Wii version of the invincibility theme plays while in use. The Super Star does not reappear in theBattle Ring version of the fight.

They grant Mario invincibility, allowing him to defeat enemies without battling them, much like inSuper Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars. Paper Mario: The Origami King[edit]

A Super Star is found after clearing the leaf memory game inWhispering Woods inPaper Mario: The Origami King, and is used to cross some beds of thorns to reach aHidden Block and Collectible Treasure. At Picnic Road, a Super Star is a possible reward of great fortune received from thefortune Toad; atOverlook Mountain, where it is used to destroy theThwomps; and in King Shroomses's tomb in theTemple of Shrooms, where it is used to defeat theScuttlebugs andCo Gasagoso.

Mario Pinball Land[edit]

Invincibility Stars can be obtained either from purchasing them atToad's tent, obtaining them from certain ? Blocks, or receiving them from a roulette after obtaining aquestion mark inMario Pinball Land. It is possible for the effect of the Invincibility Star to continue over into the next level.

Super Mario Stadium series[edit]

Stars are featured in a few minigames in theSuper Mario Stadium series. They appear inStar Dash ofMario Superstar Baseball, where collecting one gets the player ten coins and makes it possible for them to the same number of coins from other players as well as defeat Thwomps. Stars are featured similarly inGraffiti Runner andBlooper Baserun ofMario Super Sluggers, but are ineffective against a larger player's earthquake orChain Chomps.

Stars are also inToy Field, giving the player 30 coins from each opponent inMario Superstar Baseball, later changed to becoming part of a jackpot event to choose a treasure chest with it for coins inMario Super Sluggers.

Stars are usable only by the losing team of a match inSuper Mario Strikers. They double the user's speed, knocking down any opponent they touch.

Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games[edit]

Super Stars are featured within both thehandheld andconsole versions ofMario & Sonic at the Olympic Games. For the handheld version, they are items during theDream Basketball event, where they are named "Starman," and throwing a Powerup Ball with one on into a hoop turns every ball golden. They grant temporary invincibility from all items during theDream Canoe andDream Long Jump events, as well as increased speed in the latter. Super Stars are used automatically inDream Shooting upon hitting an Item Box, giving them unlimited shots temporarily. In every aforementioned event, the user's icon on the upper screen changes color constantly. Super Stars are also in the console variation ofDream Race, where they grant invincibility from all items except forBoos for five seconds.

Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Winter Games[edit]

Super Stars appear as items in severalDream Events in both thehandheld andconsole versions ofMario & Sonic at the Olympic Winter Games. In the handheld version, Super Stars appear inSki Cross Racing,Rocket Ski Jumping,Extreme Snowboarding andFever Hockey, granting invincibility and a boost in speed temporarily, as well as inSki Shooting, where they allow the player to achieve a combo by shooting targets of any color. The console version includes Super Stars as items that grant invincibility and a temporary speed boost in both theIndividual andTeam versions of Dream Alpine, theIndividual andTeam versions of Dream Ski Cross, theIndividual andTeam versions of Dream Snowboard Cross,Dream Short Track,Dream Bobsleigh,Dream Snowball Fight and theIndividual andTeam versions of Dream Gliding. Furthermore, the characters chase a star for most of the Mario World routine ofDream Figure Skating, as well as inDream Ice Hockey, where it grants increased speed and the ability to knock over opponents, in addition to the usual invincibility.

Super Stars are rare items inMario Sports Mix that have their usual invincibility function, in addition to two theme songs and increasing the speed and accuracy of the ball: the ball or puck cannot be intercepted in basketball and hockey, respectively; it immobilizes players on contact in volleyball; and takes away health in dodgeball.

Mario Party series[edit]

Super Stars appear infrequently in theMario Party series. They first appear inMario Party: Island Tour, as usable items inPerilous Palace Path, and using one doubles the total number of spaces the player gets to move with theDice Block. InMario Party 10, Super Stars appear in theCheep Cheep Leap minigame, where players have to use them to defeat as manyCheep Cheeps as they can in thirty seconds. InSuper Mario Party Jamboree, a Super Star appears in Bowser Kaboom Squad after drainingImpostor Bowser's health bar, granting all eight players invincibility to finish off Impostor Bowser for good. In addition, Super Stars are an item in Koopathlon, with their effects depending on the minigame.

Puzzle & Dragons: Super Mario Bros. Edition[edit]

InPuzzle & Dragons: Super Mario Bros. Edition Super Stars appear as the symbol forLight Orbs. They are also used as Skill Items. They raise the Skill levels of teammates whose Skill levels are under level 4 such as both forms ofPeach,Bob-ombs, and all types/forms ofLakitus andBoos. Super Stars can be obtained by opening up? Blocks; winning them from the Lucky ? Blocks game atToad Houses; or from defeating Lakitus or Bob-ombs with a 10+ Combo attack.

InThe Super Mario Bros. Movie, Bowser seeks out the Super Star, a power-up that would make him invincible and thus extremely powerful. The Super Star floats on its own, instead of bouncing around as it does inSuper Mario video games. It is initially located inside aQuestion Block within a castle of theSnow Kingdom. Prior to the film's events, Bowser had been searching for the Super Star for years.^[15] From a plot standpoint, it combines the narrative role of being important and collectable fromPower Stars with the effect of making characters invincible traditional to Super Stars.

At the start of the film, Bowser attacks the Snow Kingdom in pursuit of the item. While thePenguins of the kingdom try to fight back, they are ultimately subdued. Bowser locates the Question Block of the Super Star after burning down most of the castle with hisFire Breath, then breaks the Question Block open to obtain the Super Star. Rather than using it immediately, Bowser intends to use it as part of a marriage proposal to Princess Peach, assuming that power will convince her to accept it, and take over the world together. If Peach refuses, he intends to use it himself and destroy theMushroom Kingdom. He communicates this tohis minions inhis castle during a concert while displaying the Super Star, excluding the "take over the world" portion. The Super Star is kept floating above Bowser's throne in his castle. The Toads of the Mushroom Kingdom learn that Bowser obtained the Super Star, and assume he is coming to the Mushroom Kingdom exclusively to use its power and destroy them. When Bowser arrives atPeach's Castle, he brings the Super Star with him and shows it to Peach. She assumes this to be a threat, but Bowser proposes to her with it, including the "take over the world" portion. Peach turns the proposal down.

Later on, after aBomber Bill explodes inside theWarp Zone, resulting in a vacuum effect that brings Bowser's Castle and everyone on it toBrooklyn, the Super Star bounces out of the castle and onto the city streets. When Mario notices the Super Star and Bowser climbing out of the castle, Mario tries to run over and grab the Super Star. However, Bowser jumps from the castle to land between them, then batters Mario away.

Later on, Bowser and his minions spread out onto the streets, withKamek using his magic to hold the Super Star in place. When Mario returns to confront Bowser, Peach uses a Koopa Shell to knock the Super Star away from Kamek and toward Mario, indicating that Mario needs to collect it. The Super Star lands past Mario and bounces farther down the street before coming to a stop. Both Bowser and Mario run to collect it, but Mario has a head start so Bowser tries to burn him with Fire Breath before Mario can get it. This is blocked byLuigi using a manhole cover, buying enough time for both Mario and Luigi to reach and use the Super Star. With the invincibility from the Super Star, they survive the Fire Breath, overpower Bowser's army, defeat Bowser, and demolish Bowser's Castle.

InMonopoly Gamer, the board contains four Super Star spaces. A player landing on one of these spaces can activate their "Super Star Ability" listed on their Character card.

In the Wii U and Nintendo Switch versions ofLEGO City Undercover, the Pop Star character is unlocked by finding and building 5 Super Stars. A balloon shaped like a Super Star also appears in Festival Square.

InOkaeri! Chibi-Robo! Happy Richie Ōsōji!, a Super Star appears as a gem when sieving dirt. It is a very rare gem and is worth 5000 Moolah. When picked up, it plays the invincibility theme fromSuper Mario Bros. and will keep playing as long as it is held. It is also seen on a face-in-hole board that appears when every gem in the game is found.
