Plot synopsis[edit]
On a hot summer day in July inNew York City,Mario jumps into a kiddie pool in his front yard as he comments on how hot the day is, finding himself fortunate that he has a swimming pool. However, when he jumps into it, it instantly pops. As he cries from having hurt his nose when jumping into the pool, a mound of a dirt appears under him as someone sings "Schwarzbraun ist die Haselnuss". The singer soon emerges from the mound, revealing to beBottles from theBanjo-Kazooie series.
Bottles is confused to find himself in Mario's front yard, thinking that he may have taken a wrong turn fromBamberg, and wonders if Mario isBanjo orKazooie. Mario suggests that he should buy some stronger glasses, before asking if he can help make his front yard vacation more tolerable; Bottles offers to be his tour guide, with him being his travel companion, an offer Mario immediately accepts. Bottles thentells the reader to extinguish their cigarettes, as the descent is about to begin. As Mario, confused, comments that he does not smoke, Bottles wishes the reader a safe trip and hopes that have their toughest overalls on. Mario then jumps into Bottles's hole as he digs a tunnel, the former surprised by how far and deep he falls.
The two end up on a beachHawaii, where their appearance scares everyone away from the beach. As several women run away, Mario is angry that his deodorant failed just as he meets a group of women. Bottles, however, laughs at them having scared them away, finding it "cute". Bottles soon notices a message center advertising a golf tournament at theWaialae C.C. Believing that winning the tournament will get them money and women, the two properly dress themselves and present themselves to the groundskeeper. The groundskeeper, impressed by their outfits, takes them to a beaten-up golf cart. The groundskeeper tells the two how to operate the golf cart as they drive away, with Mario complaining on how "uncool" the cart is. As Mario hopes that no one sees them in the golf cart, a stray golf ball hits the cart, resulting in it being destroyed. Bottles laments that their formal clothes are also ruined, but claims that it "won't shake a plumber" (in reference to "Das kann doch einen Seemann nicht erschüttern", written by German songwriterBruno Balz), presenting a set of "golf clubs", with Mario sarcastically complimenting him on his unconventional selection.
Mario begins by using a fly-infested toilet brush, but accidentally hits Bottles in the face when it slips out of his hands when trying to hit the golf ball. After this mishap, Mario manages to hit the ball with the toilet brush, which flies high into the air. However, the ball flies so far that it takes them two hours to find the ball, which has landed in a sunbathing woman's two-piece. Mario, somewhat scared of the woman's reaction, compliments her for having found "Bottles"'s ball, who the woman compliments for having made a "hole in one" as the ball falls out of her two-piece. Mario hits the ball, also hitting the woman's pet cat, to the hole, which, after a little bouncing, lands in the hole. Bottles compliments for having hit the ball into the hole as Mario explains that it is how golfing is done.
The two continue making their way through the holes, causing mischief along the way (such as Mario taking out an airplane's engine when he hits it when trying to get a hole in one). Mario dominates the tournament, surpassing all obstacles (and also making obstacles when there are none). Mario takes the game seriously, clearing the premises of all competitors.
As Mario runs to claim his prize, the groundskeeper, furious, explains that he destroyed the entire golf course and scared away all of the players. With the country club having lost all profit from him having scared away the players, the groundskeeper gives him his "prize", demanding that he never come back to the country club again. As Mario is surprised that he did not get any money or girls, Bottles notes that the "prize" the groundskeeper gave him is a plane ticket for two people to New York City. Mario, furious, begins chasing Bottles with a toilet brush and baseball bat into the horizon, explaining that he did not want to come to Hawaii just to go right back home.
