対 クッパ戦 VS Koopa Battle | Battling Bowser | This piece is one of my personal favorites, and among the first pieces of music I composed for the game. It's an arrangement of Bowser's theme from Super Mario Bros. 3. I rearranged several tracks for this game, and this was one where I felt confident the arrangement came out well. Come to think of it, I referenced quite a lot of music from Super Mario Bros. 3. Take "Super Mario House," for example. The main melody is the one we're all familiar with, while the backing I took from a different track in Super Mario Bros. 3. |
森のキノコにご用心 Beware of Forest Mushrooms | Beware of Forest Mushrooms | I received a lot of compliments about this composition from my colleagues and acquaintances. Curious as to why, I asked Sugawara, the sound engineer, to give me his analysis. He said it was because out of the entire soundtrack, this piece sounded strangely lyrical. Considering where this track plays, I don't think it was strange at all! During development, the area was first called the Forest of Spirits and later the Lost Forest before the name was eventually finalized as Forest Maze. I wanted to express the feeling of being inside an eerie forest shrouded in mystery, hence the "strangely lyrical" direction. Well, I like this track a lot, so I'm happy other people do, too. |
Docaty Mountain Railroad | Moleville Mountain Rail | One evening, I decided to have dinner at an okonomiyaki restaurant close to my workplace. The country music that was playing over the speakers shook me to my very core! I knew then and there that it was a sign from the universe telling me to compose a country piece for the mine cart minigame! However, the song they were playing was rather old, and the album was already out of print. Nonetheless, I wrote this track before that flash of inspiration dimmed. I finished in under thirty minutes. Not that it's a very long piece, anyway. |
そしてわたしの名はブッキー And That Means My Name Is Bucky | And That Makes Me Booster! | "Booster's quite the jokester, so his tower is like a huge toy box, with booby traps and tricks around every corner to entertain his guests. It's what every boy dreams of." This is what I was told when I asked for a description of Booster Tower. I thought it'd be something cute and whimsical, until I opened up said box of tricks myself. Wowee! I kept the developer and the designer's requests in mind to produce this jazzy-sounding track. I think it fits. |
マルガリ・マルガリータ Margari-Margarita | Valen-Valentina | This might sound weird coming from me, but this is one strange track, isn't it? The laughter in the background is none other than Valentina. The voice samples were provided by Chii, one of the staff in charge of sound effects. We asked her to give us the most pompous sounding cackle she could muster, even though "pompous" is not a word I'd use to describe her at all. Still, this piece sure is an odd one. Though as soon as you take out the laughter, there's nothing that remarkable about it… |
対 変身好きのカジオー戦 VS Transformation-Liking Kajiō Battle | Battling Smithy's Many Forms | These days it feels like it's a given that the final boss undergoes some sort of transformation, doesn't it? (Although, the less they transform, the fewer tracks I'd have to compose…) This boss fight didn't have any extra phases originally, but those plans changed at the very end. Back to my keyboard it was… After tearing my hair out over what kind of theme to write, this is what I came up with. I will say I do like the brief, reggae-like section that pops up in the middle. |

Notes
- "The Hill," the song that plays onBooster Hill, ends a few seconds earlier in the soundtrack album than in the game in theD major verse. However, the original full version of the song has its last two verses inE major and a repeatedG flat major in a higher octave than the first verse, both verses of which were absent in the soundtrack album and in the game.
