Super Mario Galaxy is an enhancedNintendo Switchport of theWiigame of the same name released worldwide for theNintendo Switch on October 2, 2025 as part of theSuper Mario Bros. 40th Anniversary celebration.[1] First announced during the September 2025 Nintendo Direct, the game can be purchased individually on theNintendo eShop or together withSuper Mario Galaxy 2 in theSuper Mario Galaxy + Super Mario Galaxy 2 bundle.[1] This is the second reissue ofSuper Mario Galaxy for the Nintendo Switch, following the version included inSuper Mario 3D All-Stars.

Differences from the Wii version[edit]

Gameplay[edit]

  • An update, when played on theNintendo Switch 2, allows the second player in Co-Star Mode to play with Joy-Con 2 mouse controls.[13]
  • As withSuper Mario Odyssey, the game features anAssist Mode that allows the player to start with six health as if they collected aLife Mushroom, allows them to recover health by remaining stationary, and automatically returns them to solid ground if they fall into the void. Switching between Assist Mode and Normal Mode returns the player to the last checkpoint, resetting collectibles and enemies as if the player had died.[14]
  • Rosalina's Storybook includes an additional chapter.[14]
  • The soundtrack can be accessed and listened to from the main menu.[14]
  • amiibo are now supported, and, like inSuper Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury, scanning them gives the player in-game items. Scanning anyMario orRosalina amiibo grants aLife Mushroom or1-Up Mushroom, respectively. Additionally, amiibo figures from theSuper Mario franchise grantcoins, while all other compatible amiibo grantStar Bits.
  • As withSuper Mario Galaxy 2 onward, the game now autosaves after collecting Stars rather than prompting the player to save manually.
    • When saving, an icon appears at the bottom left corner of the screen. The player can freely move around while the game is saving.
  • As withSuper Mario Galaxy 2, the player can now useLeft Stick andDirectional Buttons to navigate menus, rather than having to use the pointer.
  • Collecting aLife Mushroom when the player has six segments of health now gives an extra life, rather than having no effect.

Changes taken fromSuper Mario 3D All-Stars[edit]

  • The title screen now only says to pressA Button instead ofA Button andB Button. Unlike3D All-Stars, however, pressingB Button no longer emits a yellow glow effect that appears around the logo.
  • Miis can no longer be selected as a save icon, similar to the Nvidia Shield version.[15]
  • Due to the lack of speakers in theJoy-Con controllers, any sounds played through theWii Remote speakers in the original game are instead heard through the game's audio.
  • The animated icon for how tospin by shaking the Wii Remote is changed to a Joy-Con (R). The animated icon for motion control-related tutorials displays guidance for both a Joy-Con (R) and the entire Nintendo Switch console in handheld mode, regardless of which input is being used at the time.
  • The text has been updated to reflect the new controls, and the game features extra tutorial dialogue to accommodate for handheld mode.
  • WhenMailtoad is spoken to during the 121stPower Star in theGrand Finale Galaxy, he now has different dialogue. The "Yes" or "No" prompt is removed, and the two images obtained from him are automatically sent to the Nintendo Switch album if he is talked to. Additionally, the message from theSuper Mario Galaxy staff that was originally sent to theWii Message Board is now read out by Mailtoad in-game.[citation needed]
  • The player can no longer spin the star cursor by tilting the controller, or pan the camera while incannons by holding down the crouch button (ZL Button) and moving the controller away from the screen, due to the lack of a Sensor Bar.
  • Due to the lack of a Sensor Bar, theStar Pointer originally brought up by the Wii Remote automatically is instead brought up by pressingR Button on any menu (or clicking the stick in Co-Star Mode), in order to stay faithful to the original Wii's menu controls.
  • Bunnies that need to be chased move slower than in the Wii version.[citation needed]
  • Due to the lack ofNunchuk compatibility, the text boxes that appear when it needs to be connected, when it is connected, and when communications with it have been interrupted no longer appear.
  • The icon and warning sound that appeared when the Wii Remote is low on batteries no longer appears.

Visuals[edit]

  • As with the version ofSuper Mario Galaxy included inSuper Mario 3D All-Stars, the game runs at 1080p in docked mode and 720p in handheld mode.[16]
    • An update, when played on the Nintendo Switch 2, allows the game to run at 4K in docked mode and 1080p in handheld mode.[14]
  • The UI has been updated.[16]
    • TheHUD font used for the Life Meter, currencies, race ranks, and the "Welcome to the Galaxy!", "3", "2", "1", "Go!", "Time's up!", "Too bad!", "Goal!", "You lose", "Game Over", "You Got a Star!", "You Got a Grand Star!", and "The End" text has been replaced with themodernSuper Mario font introduced inSuper Mario 3D Land, and appears less glossy than in the original. In addition, the aforementioned text is now stylized in all caps.[17]
  • Most environmental and character textures have been replaced with higher-resolution versions.[18]
  • The opening pre-rendered cutscene has been re-rendered at a higher resolution with certain textures replaced with higher-resolution versions. The aspect ratio has also been changed from 2.20:1 to 1.78:1, matching the gameplay aspect ratio and showing more on the top and bottom.[18]

Text and translations[edit]

  • At the start of theSpace Junk Galaxy mission "Tarantox's Tangled Web",Captain Toad's text was changed to refer to both Toads encountered throughout the mission instead of a singular Toad, now saying (changes highlighted inbold), "Some brave brigadeToads went to search for a Power Star. They went off to that planet and haven't been seen since! You thinkthey're OK?"
  • In theSea Slide Galaxy mission "Faster Than a Speeding Penguin",Yellow Toad now refers to the leader of thePenguin Racers as "the captain" instead of "Coach" to differentiate him fromthe large penguin also seen in the game.
  • The game is now localized in Traditional Chinese, Dutch, and Brazilian Portuguese.
    • It also uses a new Simplified Chinese translation, as opposed to reusing the one from the Nvidia Shield TV version. In addition to being more accurate to the Japanese script, text using the HUD font is left in English rather than being localized into Chinese.
    • The game has been re-titled in Korean fromSuper Mario Wii: Galaxy Adventure toSuper Mario Galaxy, making the Korean version consistent with other regions, and simultaneously dropping theWii branding.
  • In the Korean version, KoreanNGL is now used as the body text font instead of KoreanSDNR.
  • In Italian, some titles have been renamed, most of them to give the bosses and enemies their recent names, and the boss mission names that originally had descriptive names now have the bosses' names: for example,Beware of Bouldergeist is changed from "Beware the Phantom Boss!" to "Beware the Bouldergeist!", andThe Dirty Tricks of Major Burrows is changed from "Here comes the Big Rodent" to "Here comes Major Burrows".
  • "Wall Jumping up Waterfalls" now uses its NTSC name across all English regions.
