Super Mario (simply calledMario inSuper Mario 3D Land)[1] is a form ofMario and various other characters assumed by obtaining aSuper Mushroom. Super Mario is twoblocks tall, twice as tall asSmall Mario (referred to in earlier games as "regular" Mario). He is able to withstand being hit by anenemy without immediately losing alife, instead reverting back to Small Mario. He can also breakBrick Blocks, and, as ofNew Super Mario Bros., earn multiplecoins fromCoin Blocks in one heldGround Pound, unlike Small Mario. Characters in their Super form are visually identical to their appearances in games in theSuper Mario franchise where the Super and Small forms do not appear.
"Super Mario" was used to define what is otherwise known as Fire Mario onThe Super Mario Bros. Super Show!, but this was dropped forThe Adventures of Super Mario Bros. 3, which used the correct term.
History[edit]
This section is astub. Please considerexpanding it to include any missing information.Specifics: History section should probably have per game sectioning. This is one of the most recurring subjects in the entire Mario brand, there's defensively more to be said about where the form appears and equally things to say about where it does not appear.
Super Mario series[edit]
TheSuper Mario games depict the Super form as Mario's regular usual form. In fact, Mario always appears as Super Mario in the endings of most games, and the opening scenes created forSuper Mario World: Super Mario Advance 2 andSuper Mario Advance 4: Super Mario Bros. 3 depict Mario and Luigi's Super forms as their standard forms. This also applies toPeach,Toad,Toadette,Yoshi andhis kind, andDaisy in post-Fall 2017 versions ofSuper Mario Run as well. Also, the opening ofNew Super Mario Bros. depicts Mario or Luigi starting out in their Super forms, only to take damage off-screen and revert to the Small form in time for the actual gameplay. This means that Super Mario is in fact Mario's normal usual form, and he becomes Small when taking damage, similar toWario inWario Land: Super Mario Land 3. Similarly, in post-fall 2017 versions ofSuper Mario Run, Peach and Daisy are depicted in their Super forms when being kidnapped byBowser, shrinking only when taking damage while playing as them, therefore meaning that Super Peach and Super Daisy are also their normal usual forms as well.
InSuper Mario Bros. 2 (original andSuper Mario All-Stars versions only),Super Mario 3D Land,Super Mario 3D World, andCaptain Toad: Treasure Tracker, should the player lose a life, they will start off in their Super form, regardless of what form they were in prior to losing a life. This is not the case in post-Fall 2017 versions ofSuper Mario Run as Peach, Toad, Toadette, and the Yoshis remain in their Small forms upon returning, even though they start the level in their regular usual forms. This did not happen in the pre-Fall 2017 versions, as they were defeated in one hit and did not shrink, therefore making their regular usual forms their only form in the game and also their weakest form, despite the advantage of being able to break Brick Blocks, unlike Mario and Luigi, who require their Super forms to do so. Additionally, inSuper Mario Bros. 2 andSuper Mario Run, the Super form is the maximum form that a character can be in as there are no higher tiered power-ups that allow a character to have additional abilities, such as the ability to shoot fireballs. In theBowser's Fury mode ofSuper Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury, Small Mario also turns back into his Super form upon collecting aCat Shine.
InSuper Mario 64 DS, Super Mario has a similar size and functionality toMega Mario inNew Super Mario Bros. onwards. The character can obliterate almost anything in his path, and if he breaks more than eight objects, he will get a 1-Up for every additional object he destroys. The mushrooms are always found inBricks andstumps scattered throughout the level and are introduced in theBob-omb Battlefield. The character cannot do any special types ofjumps, such as theTriple Jump. If Yoshi grabs a mushroom, he gains the ability to punch. While powered up by the mushroom, the music that plays is a variation of theMetal Cap theme.
A giant version of Mario's Super form also appears inBowser's Fury, afterGiga Cat Mario takes damage fromFury Bowser. The giant Super form highly resemblesMega Mario, but unlike it, this form is not completely invulnerable (Mario can still be damaged by Fury Bowser further, which reverts him to a giant version ofSmall Mario) and does not have a time limit.
InSuper Mario Bros.,Super Mario Bros.: The Lost Levels, and the original andAll-Stars versions ofSuper Mario Bros. 3, if Mario or Luigi get aFire Flower (or aSuper Leaf in the last game) while in Small form, they will only turn into their Super forms instead. This was changed inSuper Mario World so that Small Mario bypasses the Super form upon using a higher-tiered power-up. Also,Super Mario Bros.,Super Mario Bros.: The Lost Levels, and the original version ofSuper Mario World are the only games whereFire Mario (orCaped Mario in the last game) immediately shrinks to Small Mario if hit. In all games, upon powering down to Super Mario, Mario flashes while he is granted a brief period of invincibility.
Super Mario Bros.: Peach-hime Kyūshutsu Dai Sakusen![edit]
In the filmSuper Mario Bros.: Peach-hime Kyūshutsu Dai Sakusen!, Mario becomes giant after he uses theSuper Mushroom and uses this form to defeat various enemies.
Super Mario-kun[edit]
In Volume 4 of theSuper Mario-kun manga,Princess Peach attempts to aidMario againstBowser by throwing him aSuper Mushroom, but Bowser quickly steals it and eats it, transforming into a giant known as "Super Bowser" (スーパークッパ). Mario tries to attack him, but Bowser easily deflects him, seemingly defeating him.
Super Mario (Kodansha series)[edit]
In theSuper Mario Kodansha manga, Mario always assumes a (temporary) muscular form when he obtains a Super Mushroom instead of growing bigger. In theDr. Mario volume, however, to get rid of the giantViruses,Dr. Mario eats a bunch of Super Mushrooms and turns giant to send them flying into orbit with a "Doctor Mario Super Punch". After that, Luigi returns him to normal with a mallet, like in theIssun-bōshi fairy tale.
Club Nintendo[edit]
This section is astub. Please considerexpanding it to include any missing information.Specifics: What does he do in the story?
In theClub Nintendo comic "Super Mario: Verloren in der Zeit", Super Mario is depicted as much taller than other humans, similar toMega Mario.
Donkey Kong[edit]
Although not actually playable in the Game Boy version ofDonkey Kong, Mario does achieve the form in theending for the game, where he used it to liftDonkey Kong off him as the latter begs forhis son to help him. In addition, a similar form was achieved by Donkey Kong that acted as thefinal boss due to accidentally making contact with several Super Mushrooms, although the overall size was closer to theMega Mario transformation.
Mario Party 3[edit]
In theminigameToadstool Titan ofMario Party 3, characters can grow giant by obtaining theMushroom hidden in one of the severalBrick Blocks every round. Once the character obtains the mushroom, they are capable of knocking out other characters in a short period of time. Super characters cannot jump and control their moves, however, instead charging in the direction they are facing. In the minigame's reappearances inMario Party: The Top 100 andMario Party Superstars, this form is replaced with Mega Mario.
Paper Mario series[edit]
Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door[edit]
InPaper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door,Bowser can a similar state during his side-scrolling intermission stages by eatingMeat. If he eats enough Meat, it has the similar effect toMega Mushroom and makes him huge, invincible, and destructive for a brief time.
Paper Mario: Color Splash[edit]
This section is astub. Please considerexpanding it to include any missing information.
InPaper Mario: Color Splash, Mario briefly assumes this form during his performance onstage inThe Emerald Circus.
Mario Super Sluggers[edit]
InMario Super Sluggers, any character can become temporarily Mega by finding a Mushroom in theminigameGraffiti Runner. When players are giant, they can create small earthquakes that can paralyze all ground opponents for a brief period. However, they are still vulnerable to body checks,Chain Chomps, and characters that are invincible.
Mario Golf: World Tour /Mario Sports Superstars[edit]
InMario Golf: World Tour andMario Sports Superstars, if Mario receives a double bogey, he turns into Small Mario, thus reverting from the Super form.Gold Mario shares his animations with Mario, but he turns into Super Mario instead.
Puzzle & Dragons: Super Mario Bros. Edition[edit]
One of the forms Mario and Luigi can use inPuzzle & Dragons: Super Mario Bros. Edition is the Super form. It can be unlocked for each of the two characters upon completingWorld 1-
Tower, and it grants the Light attribute to the player.
Peach and Rosalina also have forms referred to as "Super" forms, though unlike the standard Super form, they look the same as their regular forms except Peach has herparasol and Rosalina has her wand andspin.
The Super Mario Bros. Movie[edit]
InThe Super Mario Bros. Movie,Mario transforms into Super Mario after eating aSuper Mushroom while going throughPrincess Peach'sTraining Course and again before fighting against Bowser's minions alongsideDonkey Kong.[2]
Unlike his more contemporary appearances in the games, Super Mario is treated as a power-up of Mario's default form as opposed to it being Mario's default size, asSmall Mario's signature shrunken proportions are never present when Mario is depowered. Super Mario is depicted as twice the size of normal Mario, alongside the ability torun extremely fast, jump higher andGround Pound.
Development[edit]
During development ofSuper Mario Bros., players were originally meant to start off as Super Mario, something that would later be implemented inSuper Mario Bros. 2. However, Mario's size and the camera position made it difficult to see around him. Once it was suggested that Mario should become smaller instead of pulling the camera away, Super Mario was made into a different form that would shrink into Small Mario when he is damaged. When asked ifShigeru Miyamoto considered letting players start off as Super Mario, he responded with "Starting with the small Mario would make players happier when Mario got big later, and it would also give a better impression to players." It was also decided to name the game "Super Mario Bros." after this new bigger form of Mario's.[3]

Notes[edit]
- In the first fourSuper Smash Bros. games, Mario's taunt (up taunt inSuper Smash Bros. Brawl andSuper Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS /Wii U) is to enlarge himself using the same stance and animation as changing fromSmall Mario to Super Mario inSuper Mario Bros., with that game's sounds used for the taunt inSuper Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS / Wii U.
- InSuper Mario All-Stars, if the player is in Small form upon completingSuper Mario Bros. orSuper Mario Bros.: The Lost Levels, a Super Mushroom will automatically appear and turn Mario/Luigi into their Super forms before the ending cutscene. Likewise,Super Mario Advance 4: Super Mario Bros. 3 automatically turns Mario/Luigi into their Super forms after defeating Bowser.
- InSuper Mario Bros. 3, using a Super Mushroom on the map screen turns Mario/Luigi into their Super forms, regardless of their prior form.
- InSuper Mario Bros. and itsGame Boy Color remakeSuper Mario Bros. Deluxe, Super Mario and Super Luigi are depicted as being a head taller than Princess Peach, with the latter game even depicting her standing on her toes to kiss them. Later games ignore this and depict Mario, and to a certain extent Luigi, as being shorter than Peach.
- In early guides circaSuper Mario Bros. 3, Super Mario is referred to asDeka Mario (デカマリオ) (deka being one of the opposite words ofchibi).[10][better source needed]
