Super Koopas, also known asSuper Koopa Troopas,[1] areunshelled Koopas that wear capes, allowing them to fly.

History[edit]

Super Mario World /Super Mario World: Super Mario Advance 2[edit]

Super Koopas are found inSuper Mario World, where they appear inDonut Plains 1,Butter Bridge 2, andFunky. They can be defeated by all attacks.

There are four types of Super Koopas:

  • Red shoes with yellow capes: They swoop down whenMario orLuigi approaches, and then rise back up. While the cast roll shows a red-shoed Super Koopa on the ground walking like a blue-shoed one, this never happens in gameplay.
  • Green shoes with red capes: They have the same behavior as above, but they are randomly generated enemies. They can also be summoned by two whistlingChargin' Chucks in Funky.
  • Blue shoes with yellow capes: They start on the ground, but they take off and fly continuously forward.
  • Blue shoes with flashing capes: Same as above, butstomping on one separates it from aCape Feather, reverting it to a normal unshelled Koopa. Otherwise, all other attacks instantly defeat the Super Koopas without providing the feather.

InSuper Mario World: Super Mario Advance 2, a cutscene shown after the player completes all 96 exits shows Super Koopas with green shoes and yellow capes.

Super Mario (Kodansha manga)[edit]

Donut Plains 1
Mario gets a cape from a Super Koopa.

InSuper Mario Bros. 4: Super Mario World 1, Super Koopas kidnapPrincess Peach and take her toBowser. Mario and his friends later meet them inDonut Plains 1, and Mario gets a cape he continues to have for the whole story arc.

Super Mario-kun[edit]

Super Koopas are one of the very first enemies met by Mario and Luigi in theSuper Mario-kun manga. Two Super Koopas charge at the Mario Bros., but Mario manages to burn one of them and steals its cape, then uses the second Super Koopa to understand how to use the cape, first by playing magic tricks and then by using the enemy like ateru teru bōzu. The Super Koopa gets angry and charges at Mario, but he dodges it with a jump, finally understanding how the flying cape works, and the Super Koopa crashes against a wall.

Mario & Wario[edit]

Super Koopas make a cameo appearance inMario & Wario in the background of Level 3.

WarioWare: D.I.Y. Showcase[edit]

Super Koopas appear inWarioWare: D.I.Y. Showcase in the microgameSuper Koopa, where they are based on theirSuper Mario World appearance. In the microgame,Caped Mario must dodge them and collect somecoins.

Mario Kart World[edit]

Mario Kart World marks Super Koopas' first 3D appearance, where they appear in severalroutes, such as the route fromSky-High Sundae toCheep Cheep Falls. They periodically dropFeathers that make the player jump automatically upon collection, making them serve as obstacles to be avoided. They also appear in amission featuring themselves, where the dropped Feathers can instead be utilized to reach someItem Boxes that will help the player cross thering goal within the time limit.[2]

Profiles and statistics[edit]

Super Mario World[edit]

  • Instruction booklets:
    • English:
A Koopa that can fly once it has put on a magic cape. It looks like this guy might give Caped Mario some tough aerial combat. But look at the bright side ... if you jump on one that's wearing a flashing cape, you'll get a Cape Feather.[3]
    • Other languages:
      • Japanese:
マジックマントを身につけた、空飛ふカメ。マントマリオは激しい空中戦になりそうだ。点滅するマントを着ているやつを踏むと、マント羽根がもらえるよ。(A flying turtle wearing a Magic Cape. Caped Mario is going to be in an intense aerial battle. If you step on one wearing a flashing cape, you'll get a Cape Feather.)
