ASuper Mushroom (originally known as aMagic Mushroom,[1][2] and also known as aPower Booster Mushroom,[3] aPower-Up Mushroom,[4][5][6] or better widely known as simply aMushroom) is the most basic power-up item in theSuper Mario games and a prominent symbol to represent the broaderSuper Mario franchise.

It is usually depicted as a redmushroom with white spots, though they appear yellow with red spots in their debut appearance,Super Mario Bros. Super Mushrooms usually have the effect of changingMario fromSmall toSuper; this gives Mario the ability to breakBrick Blocks and take one hit from enemies or obstacles, reverting back to Small Mario. Super Mushrooms have functioned as a healing item in certain appearances. The opposite of the Super Mushroom is thePoison Mushroom, which damages the player character. Both this and the generic mushroom are designed after the poisonousAmanita muscaria, with the shape resembling abutton mushroom.

Super Mushrooms were originally believed to have been inspired by the cake that Alice eats inAlice's Adventures in Wonderland that makes her grow after having been shrunk by a potion. However,Shigeru Miyamoto later corrected himself, saying that this was a misunderstanding; the mushrooms were actually inspired by the concept of mushrooms being associated with magical worlds in general, like the wonderland ofAlice's Adventures in Wonderland and theMushroom Kingdom.[7]

Super Mario series[edit]

Super Mario Bros. /Super Mario Bros.: The Lost Levels[edit]

The Super Mushroom as it appears inSuper Mario Bros., the Sharp X1 version ofSuper Mario Bros. Special,Super Mario Bros.: The Lost Levels,Super Mario Bros./Super Mario Bros.: The Lost Levels inSuper Mario All-Stars, andSuper Mario Bros. Deluxe.

Magic Mushrooms work the same inSuper Mario Bros. andSuper Mario Bros.: The Lost Levels, namely by growing Mario into Super Mario. If Mario is Super, aFire Flower appears instead of a Magic Mushroom, but if Mario takes damage before getting the Fire Flower, it functions just as a Magic Mushroom instead. Like1-Up Mushrooms, players can make Magic Mushrooms jump by hitting either abrick,? orCoin Block; performing the action before a Magic Mushroom passes over the block's center causes it to start moving the opposite direction. A Magic Mushroom moves at the same speed as Mario's walking speed, and it can move the opposite way upon touching a wall. The first Magic Mushroom inSuper Mario Bros. is located in the second ? ofWorld 1-1.

The only difference with Magic Mushrooms inSuper Mario Bros.: The Lost Levels from the firstSuper Mario Bros. is a different sprite depicting them with a pair of eyes, as well as the introduction of thePoison Mushroom, which has the same sprite aside from sharing a palette withGoombas (i.e. appearing brown in the overworld, blue in underground areas, and gray incastle stages). Magic Mushrooms use the same sprites in thereissues of both games included inSuper Mario All-Stars as well asSuper Mario Bros. Deluxe.

There is an unseen function inSuper Mario Bros. where if Super Mario touches a Magic Mushroom, he turns into Fire Mario. The game bypasses this by not spawning any Magic Mushrooms when the player is Super.[8]

Super Mario Bros. 3[edit]

Super Mushroom as seen in Super Mario Bros. 3.A Super Mushroom, from the SNES remake of Super Mario Bros. 3.

Super Mushrooms function the same inSuper Mario Bros. 3 as before, except they can now also move left if the player stands to the right of the block. Their sprite was changed to make their cap white with red spots, as well as more circular, though remakes depict their sprite as the usual red cap with white spots, except in the map inventory.

Super Mario Land[edit]

Super Mushroom

Super Mushrooms make a return inSuper Mario Land. This game gives it the unique distinction of lacking spots, due to the Game Boy's graphical limitations. They once again turn Mario intoSuper Mario, allowing him to take one hit without losing a life and breakbricks. Unlike in most other games, however, they fall straight down if they fall off an edge, rather than at an angle. They also are not able to move to the left anymore, like they were inSuper Mario Bros. 3.

Super Mario World[edit]

Super Mushroom from Super Mario World

Super Mushrooms retain their main function inSuper Mario World but have some differences. A Super Mushroom sometimes launches out of certain bushes when Mario passes by or performs aBody Press as Cape Mario. The Super Mushroom will bounce the other way if Mario spins it with his cape. A Super Mushroom goes to theItem Stock if Mario collects one in either hisSuper,Fire, orCape form.Yoshi can producean egg that contains a Super Mushroom if he eats ten redBerries in a single level, and yellow! Blocks will always produce one when hit, even when Super Mario, Fire Mario or Cape Mario.Super Mario World established the color used by Super Mushrooms, featuring red caps with white spots like inSuper Mario Bros. 2 but with its proportions fromSuper Mario Bros. 3. Before the second and third phases of the boss fight againstBowser, a Super Mushroom is thrown byPrincess Toadstool to assist Mario.

Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins[edit]

Mushroom

The Super Mushroom is a power-up item inSuper Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins and is designed similarly as inSuper Mario World. The only major difference is that Mario reverts back to his Super form if he collects one while taking a higher-tier form.

Super Mario 64 DS[edit]

Sprite of a Mushroom from Super Mario 64 DS

Mushrooms appear inSuper Mario 64 DS and make the player charactergrow gigantic for a limited time, having the same effect as aMega Mushroom in other games. Mushrooms allow the player character to destroy objects or enemies upon contact. They can be found in the following locations:

New Super Mario Bros.[edit]

Super Mushrooms inNew Super Mario Bros. had their role fromSuper Mario World reinstated, except they do not replace the Fire Flower or most other power-ups as astored item. Their design has also been updated once more, now depicted with three large white spots on the front, just like their design inMario & Luigi: Partners in Time. Collecting one is worth 1,000 points, regardless of whether Mario is Small,Mini, or in a higher-tier form. The game also standardized theMega Mushroom to have an identically colored cap to Super Mushrooms fromSuper Mario Bros.

New Super Mario Bros. Wii[edit]

Super Mushrooms retain their role inNew Super Mario Bros. Wii, except in multiplayer, the number that appears from blocks depends on the number of player characters in theirSmall orMini form, though if none of the players are powered-up, either a Fire Flower or a power-up item of the same tier appears. DuringKamek's boss fight, his magic can turn the platforms into Super Mushrooms.

Super Mario 3D Land[edit]

Super Mushrooms return inSuper Mario 3D Land with the same role as before, but if there is an item in theitem storage, collecting a power-up item earns the player ten coins instead. SomeMorty Moles can drop a Super Mushroom.

New Super Mario Bros. 2[edit]

Super Mushrooms appear inNew Super Mario Bros. 2, acting the same as inNew Super Mario Bros. Wii.

New Super Mario Bros. U[edit]

Super Mushrooms also return inNew Super Mario Bros. U, acting the same as in its predecessors.

Super Mario 3D World /Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury[edit]

Artwork of a Super Mushroom from Super Mario 3D World.

Super Mushrooms return inSuper Mario 3D World andits remake and are based mostly on their appearance inSuper Mario 3D Land. A Super Mushroom is sometimes carried on aGoomba Tower, though the player can obtain the Super Mushroom directly by popping the bubble from the GamePad screen.

Super Mushrooms are sometimes found inside of? Blocks inBowser's Fury. They can be added to the item storage, as usual. Since version 1.1.0, when Mario collects 100 coins before leavingFur Step Island, he is rewarded with only Super Mushrooms.

Super Mario Maker /Super Mario Maker for Nintendo 3DS[edit]

The Super Mushroom is an element in every game style ofSuper Mario Maker andits port. Besides powering up Mario, Super Mushrooms can also power up enemies and even be stacked on power-ups. If the player drags a Super Mushroom into an enlarged object, it coughs out the Super Mushroom and returns to normal size. There is a one percent chance of aWeird Mushroom appearing from a block instead of a Super Mushroom. If the Weird Mushroom is unlocked, the player can shake a Super Mushroom in theSuper Mario Bros. style to turn it into a Weird Mushroom.

Super Mario Run[edit]

Super Mushrooms return inSuper Mario Run and have the same purpose in other games, to turn Small Mario/Luigi into Super Mario/Luigi. Super Mushrooms can sometimes be found outside of blocks. In certain cases, a Super Mushroom found outside of a block may not move at all; some courses even have a floating Super Mushroom. Super Mushrooms that do move have behavior unique to this game: If the player is ahead of a Super Mushroom and the Super Mushroom is moving toward them, the Super Mushroom speeds up to collide with the player. The player can outrun a Super Mushroom during a Coin Rush or while they areinvincible. Super Mushrooms do not move past the player once they are in this "chasing" state outside of certain circumstances involving cutscenes. Once a Super Mushroom reaches the player's vertical position, it switches to moving at the same speed as the player.

If Mario and Luigi are already in their Super forms when they grab a Super Mushroom, they get five coins instead.Super Mario Run does not have item storage, unlikeSuper Mario World, theNew Super Mario Bros. series,Super Mario 3D Land, andSuper Mario 3D World.

In versions ofSuper Mario Run prior to the Fall 2017 update, Peach, Toad, Toadette, and Yoshi did not have small forms to shrink into when getting hit. Therefore, Super Mushrooms had no effect on them. Their default state acted identically to Super Mario, as they were as tall as Super Mario and could breakBrick Blocks. They received five coins for Super Mushrooms instead, but they were defeated by one hit.

In versions since the Fall 2017 update, Peach, Toad, Toadette, and Yoshi gained small forms to shrink into upon being hit. They continue to start levels in the large form. If they are defeated by pits, poison or lava, they enter abubble in small form. Thus, Super Mushrooms turn them back into their regular big forms. If they are already at their normal size, these characters get five coins instead.

In Remix 10, if the player collects 100 coins while small, the coin counter resets and the player is given a Super Mushroom in a bubble.

There is aSuper Mushroom Statue item in the Kingdom Builder mode, The8-bit Super Mushroom Trim and8-bit Super Mushroom Statue are other Kingdom Builder items that use the Super Mushroom's appearance fromSuper Mario Bros.

Super Mario Maker 2[edit]

Super Mushrooms return inSuper Mario Maker 2. They are the same as inSuper Mario Maker, except they now bounce away from the player in the added nighttime ground theme.

Super Mario Bros. 35[edit]

Super Mushrooms appeared inSuper Mario Bros. 35. They added 15 seconds to thetimer if either Super Mario or Fire Mario collected it. The Item Roulette sometimes provided a Super Mushroom.

Super Mario Bros. Wonder[edit]

Super Mushrooms appear inSuper Mario Bros. Wonder, acting the same as in other games.

In theSuper Mario World episode "King Scoopa Koopa", a Super Mushroom appears as one of the items in theRoulette Block. This is the only time a Super Mushroom is depicted in theDIC Entertainment-produced cartoons. It uses the yellow and red color scheme from the originalSuper Mario Bros.

Yoshi's Safari[edit]

Super Mushrooms, referred to asPower-up Mushrooms,[10] reappear inYoshi's Safari. They are dropped from Flying ? Blocks. When dropped from a yellow Flying ? Block, some of the player's LIFE Meter is recovered and they earn 1,500 bonus points. Power-up Mushrooms can also be dropped from dark teal Flying ? Blocks and are used for boss battles only, functioning the same way they do outside the battle. When not used at all, 2,000 bonus points are added to the player's highscore.

Donkey Kong (Game Boy)[edit]

In theGame Boy version ofDonkey Kong, several Super Mushrooms turnDonkey Kong gigantic right before the final battle inStage 9-9. In the ending, Mario changes size from a Super Mushroom given to him by Pauline, allowing him to catch Donkey Kong as he falls.

Hotel Mario[edit]

The Super Mushroom appears inHotel Mario. It works unlike other appearances as it affects the color of his overalls instead of his size, though still gives an extra hit point.

In the v0.09 prototype, Super Mushrooms areToad instead.[11]

In these games, the Super Mushroom is depicted as a shiny, golden variant of the regular Mushroom, and its effect is a stronger variant of the regular Mushroom's effect. Similar items have appeared in games in which the Super Mushroom is not present, such as theSuper Mega Mushroom inMario Party 4, theThrice Candy inMario Party 8, and theTriple Dice Set inMario Party DS. TheGolden Dash Mushroom also has a similar role as a stronger, golden variant of theDash Mushroom inMario Party: Island Tour,Mario Party: Star Rush,Mario Party: The Top 100, andSuper Mario Party.

Mario Party 2[edit]

The Super Mushroom appears inMario Party 2, though is calledGolden Mushroom in the English localization. It costs 20 coins to buy at anItem Shop. The player can use the Super Mushroom to roll three Dice Blocks instead of just one, and if all three numbers are the same, the player receives 20 coins, or 50 coins for triple 7s.

In addition to this item, a different golden-colored mushroom called theGold Mushroom appears in theminigamesRakin' 'em In andGrab Bag.

The Super Mushroom returns inMario Party 5 as theSuper Mushroom Capsule, a type ofcapsule obtainable from acapsule machine. Thecapsule can be either placed on a space for free or used directly for 10 coins. The Super Mushroom Capsule grants a Super Mushroom, which retains its shiny, golden appearance and effects from previous entries, though rolling the same three numbers (other than 7's) is worth 30 coins.

Mario Party 6[edit]

It returns inMario Party 6, now titledSuper 'Shroom Orb, which can be obtained either fromOrb Spaces or bought at anOrb hut for usually 15 coins. It can be found on all boards. The Super 'Shroom Orb cannot be placed on a space, unlike previous games.

Super Smash Bros. series[edit]

SmashWiki article:Super Mushroom
A Super Mushroom in Super Smash Bros. for Wii U
The Super Mushroom inSuper Smash Bros. for Wii U

The Super Mushroom appears as an item in every game of theSuper Smash Bros. series, starting withSuper Smash Bros. Melee. It allows any fighter to grow to a bigger size, thus making them heavier and harder to launch, while also increasing their run and fall speed.Giga Bowser andGiga Mac are unaffected by Super Mushrooms, since they are already very large. A Super Mushroom also increases the amount of damage that the fighter can deal to opponents, in addition to improving the fighter's reach in their attacks. Starting withSuper Smash Bros. Brawl, all direct attacks can deal 1.56x their normal damage while the fighter is giant-sized, and they only move right upon emerging. The damage multiplier excludes projectile attacks, however. Aesthetically, the user's voice is also lower-pitched. InMelee, they resemble the appearance of generic Mushrooms inMario Party 2; their modern design (adapted from the Mushrooms inMario Kart DS) is used forSuper Smash Bros. Brawl and all subsequent appearances. A Super Mushroom is also the symbol of theSuper Mario franchise.

Throughout the series, there have also been collectible items of a Super Mushroom. InSuper Smash Bros. Melee, a Super Mushroom can be randomly obtained from the Lottery or in one of the single-player modes. InSuper Smash Bros. Brawl, there is both a trophy and asticker of a Super Mushroom, both of which are unlocked at random. The sticker, simply named "Mushroom," can be used inThe Subspace Emissary by either Mario, Luigi, Peach, Bowser, or Yoshi to increase the power of their arm- and leg-based attacks by 5 points. InSuper Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS andSuper Smash Bros. for Wii U, there is another trophy of a Super Mushroom, again unlocked at random. InSuper Smash Bros. Ultimate, there is an Advanced-class supportspirit of a Super Mushroom, which increases the fighter's attack, defense, and speed after eatingfood, and it can be obtained fromTimmy & Tommy's shop. A Super Mushroom spirit's core can be combined withMetal Mario's and aFire Flower's cores to summon theGold Mario spirit.

After this appearance, Super Mushrooms went on to appear in a few of9-Volt's microgames. InWarioWare: Twisted! and laterWarioWare Gold, Super Mushrooms appear in theSuper Mario Bros. microgame, where Mario can obtain a Super Mushroom from a ? Block, just like in its namesake game. In Level 2 of theSuper Mario Land microgame inWarioWare: Get It Together!, the player's character is required to hit a ? Block and collect the Super Mushroom inside. Upon collecting it, the character grows in size.

Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker[edit]

Super Mushrooms also return inCaptain Toad: Treasure Tracker and its Nintendo Switch and Nintendo 3DSports. Like in the main series of games, Super Mushrooms turn SmallCaptain Toad and SmallToadette into their Super forms. If the player collects a Super Mushroom while the character is in Super form, they instead earn 10 coins like inSuper Mario 3D Land.

The Super Mario Bros. Movie[edit]

InThe Super Mario Bros. Movie, Super Mushroom (known in the film as ared mushroom)[13] are power ups that increase the user's size, strength, and jumping prowess after being eaten. Unlike in the video games, Super Mushrooms do not have eyes, though artwork for the movie does depict Super Mushrooms with eyes, and Super Mushrooms appear with eyes during the credits. Super Mushrooms also do not move around of their own accord.

Super Mushrooms first appear in the scenes at theTraining Course. Mario is concerned about how he is supposed to run the course, so Peach explains that power-ups grant people powers and gives him a Super Mushroom from a Question Block. Mario has a disdain towards eating mushrooms, including Super Mushrooms, introduced earlier in the film through Mario's disgust ofhis family's creamy mushroom pasta. Peach has to force him to eat it, which causes Mario to become Super Mario for the first time and thus gain the abilities needed to run the Training Course. Since each failure of the Training Course inevitably includes getting hurt and causing the effects to wear off, Mario begrudgingly has to eat another Super Mushroom to regain the powers before every attempt. At one point, he throws up for eating too many Super Mushrooms. By the final attempt, Mario does not hesitate as much before eating a Super Mushroom, and later in the film he eats both Super Mushrooms andblue mushrooms without hesitation.

When Mario andDonkey Kong fight through the Bowser-occupiedToad Town, Mario collects a Super Mushroom from a Question Block scattered by an explosion, then eats it to help him battle Bowser's army and jump around the city.

Super Mario Bros. veterans will recognize these power-ups, which hid inside brick blocks and helped Mario and Luigi withstand enemy attacks. In Super Smash Bros. Melee, they temporarily turn your character into a giant. Not only will your size and strength increase, but so will your mass, making it harder for foes to knock you off.

A mushroom that makes you giant sized. When you're this big, your attack power increases and you're harder to launch. But you become an easy target and may come under serious fire. Unlike other items, it doesn't remain in one place but moves to the right once it appears. Why to the right? Well, because that's what it did in its original appearance in Super Mario Bros.

This mysterious mushroom will cause you to grow several times your normal size. Once you've grown, the power of your attacks and your ability to launch your opponents will increase. However, being so large—and such an easy target—may not be so great in a fight with lots of enemies...(American English)
This mysterious mushroom will just keep sliding until it bounces off a wall. If you touch it, though, you'll grow and grow and grow! You'll get stronger and be harder to launch, but you'll also be a much easier target. Maybe standing out so much during a fight isn't such a good idea...(British English)

Notes[edit]

  • The manual of the originalSuper Mario Bros. actually refers to the Super Mushroom as the "Magic Mushroom," but the name was changed due to the unintentional reference tohallucinogenic mushrooms.[citation needed] The original Japanese manual referred to them as Super Mushrooms, and the English name was reverted to its original Japanese name in future games.
  • The Super Mushroom sound effect has the same tune as the one that plays after Mario/Luigi grabs theGoal Pole inSuper Mario Bros., but it is sped up, missing the last sequence of notes, is arranged differently, and is higher-pitched.[33][34]
  • In the Super Mario Mash-Up Pack inMinecraft, red mushrooms are replaced by Super Mushrooms.
  • InMario Party 2, when using a Golden Mushroom, the Dice Block uses the sound effect for theSlow Block from the originalMario Party, while the regular Mushroom uses theSpeed Block's sound effect; the reverse is true inMario Party 3.
  • Chef Toad's cap resembles the modern Super Mushroom design.
