History[edit]
WhenMario andOlivia enter the Scorching Sandpaper Desert, they happen upon the altar. It depicts an image of the sun in the center. At the back are a pair of torches with a bowl of sand in between them. Anancient text is inscribed on the altar, which translates as follows: "To open up a secret door, offer the sun a scent adored..."
When Mario acquires theSun Incense from the front desk at theSnif City Royal Hotel, he places it onto the bowl of sand. Doing so ends up summoning theMega Paper Macho Pokey, which pulls our heroes (and theBoot Car) into a sandstorm. Mario ends up defeating the Pokey, which explodes intoconfetti, releasing the renowned archaeologistProfessor Toad, who had been swallowed by the creature. The professor looks at the altar, and he deduces that the ritual was performed correctly. Olivia is thrilled that she and Mario have found someone who can decipher the Ancient Ones' writing.
The ritual is completed when the sun is returned to the sky after destroying theyellow streamer, causing the altar floor to shift and reveal a hidden staircase. This leads to a chamber whereKing Shroomses hadCaptain T. Ode kept frozen in a block of ice prior to the events of the game. After thawing out the captain using theFire Vellumental's power, Mario and Olivia can follow him to hisSuper Marino in theMusée Champignon.
