Stingbies are somewhat recurringbee enemies introduced inSuper Mario 3D Land. In themainline games, Stingbies idly hover above the ground until a player character enters their proximity, at which point they target them with thestinger on their face. They fly slowly, but are persistent.
The enemies are roughly the same size asGoombas and consist of one striped body segment covered in hair. They have a single pair of black cartoonish legs. The stinger on their face incidentally makes them reminiscent ofbee flies, which have a long proboscis.
History[edit]
Super Mario series[edit]
Super Mario 3D Land[edit]
Stingbies make their debut inSuper Mario 3D Land, and are first encountered inWorld 2-4. They are common in levels taking place in the sky or over large pits. Stingbies fly at a certain height and cannot move up or down; rather, they patrol the area to find Mario or Luigi. When a Stingby spotsMario orLuigi, they angrily start to slowly chase after them. These enemies can be easily defeated by any form of attack.
Super Mario 3D World /Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury[edit]
Stingbies are enemies inSuper Mario 3D World andits port. They behave the same as they do inSuper Mario 3D Land. Stingbies first appear inWorld 1 in the levelSwitch Scramble Circus and later appear inConkdor Canyon fromWorld 2,Switchboard Falls inWorld 3,Piranha Creeper Creek inWorld 4,Deep Jungle Drift inWorld 6, andRolling Ride Run andHoneycomb Starway inWorld Star. Cat variants appear inLake Lapcat.
Super Mario Odyssey[edit]
While Stingbies themselves do not appear inSuper Mario Odyssey, mosquito or housefly-like variants known asUrban Stingbies do. They can be found in theMetro Kingdom during the night. When an Urban Stingby sees Mario, it charges at him, disappearing if it hits a wall.
Super Mario Maker 2[edit]
Stingbies are enemies inSuper Mario Maker 2. They can placed in stages in theSuper Mario 3D World style only.Mega Stingbies are generated by giving a Stingby a Super Mushroom. Stingbies chase players who are nearby, but can only move horizontally.
Mario Kart series[edit]
Mario Kart 7[edit]
Stingbies first appear in theMario Kart series inMario Kart 7 as obstacles in the battle courseHoneybee Hive, with their appearance having a darker color than those inSuper Mario 3D Land. They travel in lines through the stage and spin out any fast-moving karts they touch.
Mario Kart World[edit]
Stingbies return inMario Kart World as obstacles onAcorn Heights, having an exclamation point that appears above their head when being alerted to passing karts, which causes them to charge into racers in the similar manner toBullies,Cataquacks andGoombas. Additionally, a Stingby appears as a playable character, marking its debut as a playable character in both theMario Kart series and theSuper Mario franchise as a whole. Itsemblem is similar toHoney Queen's, but is rather a stylized depiction of a Stingby from an overhead view.
Stingby is unlockable in version 1.0.0, but made available from the start following a software update. It shares statistics withToad,Toadette,Koopa Troopa,Shy Guy,Lakitu,Nabbit, andCheep Cheep.
Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker[edit]
Stingbies return with the inclusion ofConkdor Canyon fromSuper Mario 3D World as a bonus stage in theWii U version ofCaptain Toad: Treasure Tracker. Here, they behave just as they did in their previousSuper Mario 3D platform game appearances, chasing the protagonist when they spot him.Captain Toad can defeat a Stingby with an airborne stomp. These enemies do not return in theNintendo Switch andNintendo 3DS versions since the level is not included in them.
Minecraft[edit]
In the Super Mario Mash-Up Pack ofMinecraft, bees are retextured to look like Stingbies.
Dr. Mario World[edit]
- “Stingby's skill grants an 8% chance of 8 more seconds in timed stages. That's a ton of vitamin bee!”
- —Blue, officialDr. Mario World social media accounts[1][2]
Stingbies appear inDr. Mario World as obtainable assistants and are a clear reward bonus for completing the first area ofWorld 14 andWorld 27. They also appear in the background ofWorld 12 when an area has been cleared. In stage mode, their effect can only be used in timed stages, as it grants a chance that the timer is increased by 8 seconds, where the chance of activation is 30% at the first level and 80% at the maximum level (8% and 40% respectively prior to version 2.3.0). In versus mode, their effect is to grant a chance to automatically send two rows of viruses to the opponent's field when the stage shrinks to eight rows from the greyEmpty Blocks, where it is a 10% chance at the first level and 30% chance at the maximum level.
Paper Mario: The Origami King[edit]
Stingbies make theirPaper Mario debut inPaper Mario: The Origami King, where origami variants of them serve as enemies inSpring of Jungle Mist. Unlike their previous appearances, they can now move up and down, without being held back by a certain height. Being flying enemies, Stingbies are immune tohammer andPOW Block attacks.
Stingbies have three attacks in battle. They can Bumble Bump Mario for 12-15 damage, or sting him for 15-18 damage. A group of Stingbies can use Group Bumble Bump, a move that deals a minimum 9 damage, with the maximum increasing by one for every Stingby involved in the attack.
Super Mario Party Jamboree[edit]
AMega Stingby appears inSuper Mario Party Jamboree as a fightable mini-boss in theMega Wiggler's Tree Party board. Its bossminigame is quite similar to that ofMega Goomba's Ladder Leap fromMario Party 10 as the players mustjump up the platforms to stomp on its head, scoring apoint in the process.[3] Regular Stingbies can also appear in the minigameCamera-Ready, where they can be photographed chasing other non-playable characters, andWhich Door Has More?, where they are one of the species that can appear in the rooms.
