InMario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story andMario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story + Bowser Jr.'s Journey, Starlow is sent toPrincess Peach's meeting as a representative of the Star Sprites. She believes that the cause of theblorbs was fromBlorb Mushrooms sold bya man in a white cloak. Later, she is inhaled into Bowser, along with Mario, Luigi, and other citizens of theMushroom Kingdom. When Mario finds her in theTrash Pit, she is trapped inside an amoeba. She remarks on how the amoeba is tickling her with rage. She has the same purpose as Stuffwell does inMario & Luigi: Partners in Time: helping Mario and Luigi. Also like Stuffwell, she holds the Mario Bros.' items and equipment. However, the difference between Stuffwell and Starlow is that she has a demo version of all the abilities learned throughout the game. She can combine her powers with Princess Peach to telekinetically control characters, such as Bowser, and also help Mario and Luigi to perform certainAction Commands. Starlow often talks to Bowser from insidehis body to give him information and uses Chippy as her name for him, not wanting him to know that she is helping the Mario Bros. She also helps Mario and Luigi in their encounter with Bowser. She can also save the player from nearly unavoidable attacks from three of the game's bosses—Bowser, theDark Star, and theDark Star Core— by having Mario and Luigi grab her feet so she can fly up to the top screen.

Starlow appears to have negative feelings towards Luigi, and this negativity towards him sometimes generates humorous results, such as when Starlow angrily knocks Luigi intoAlpha Kretin after he suggests that she fight it alongside Mario rather than him. She demonstrates this only when Luigi is acting particularly cowardly. Also at the cryogenic chamber atBowser's Castle, she teases him by saying that he supported Mario by crying in the events of the previous game. However, she nonetheless cares about him, recognizes his courage, and even was surprised when Mario tells her it was actually Luigi (as a baby) who saved the day.

If the Mario Bros. travel to Bowser's Castle and engage in the optional boss fight against theShroobs, Starlow expresses curiosity on how they handled this fight as babies. She immediately expresses confidence that Mario was the one who came out on top overall. This somewhat upsets Luigi and Mario explains that Luigi did just as much as himself, and actually saved the day in the end. This refers to when, at the end ofPartners in Time, Baby Luigi cried while on a Shroob Mushroom that used to be Baby Bowser. This restored Baby Bowser, leading to the revelation that baby tears can defeat the Shroobs. It is unclear how Starlow felt hearing this and whether this gave her more confidence in Luigi's abilities or if she still lacks confidence in him based on his prior cowardly actions.

At the end of the game, when Bowser hears Starlow's voice, he easily recognizes her as Chippy and gets furious, deciding to pick a fight with the Mario Bros. and her. OnceBowser's Castle andPeach's Castle are remodeled, Starlow andBirdley deliver a present to Bowser from Peach as a thanks for all he did, and they have a small chat, ending with Starlow teasing him and him yelling at her to leave his castle, which she does.

InMario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story + Bowser Jr.'s Journey, Starlow makes an appearance with Mario and Luigi in theBowser Jr.'s Journey mode, where she tellsBowser Jr. that Bowser has beenworking very hard.

Mario & Luigi: Dream Team[edit]

“First thestache, now thenose?! What'reyou, five years old?!”
Starlow,Mario & Luigi: Dream Team

Starlow returns inMario & Luigi: Dream Team. She was invited toPi'illo Island to represent the Star Sprites. Like in the previous game, she acts as Mario andLuigi's partner and guide. She also causes Luigi's in-dream reactions by pulling and tapping on various parts of his face and moving his hand towards buttons. Her looking down on Luigi remains, and Luiginary Works are discovered when she pulls on Luigi's mustache because she is mad at him for causing all the trouble. However, chemistry develops between the two as the game progresses.

When Bowser is confronted at the top ofNeo Bowser Castle at the very end of the game, together with Peach underPrince Dreambert's command, Starlow destroys theDream Stone, only for its broken shards to be inhaled by Bowser, leading to his transformation intoDreamy Bowser.

Mario & Luigi: Paper Jam[edit]

Starlow talking.

Starlow reappears in thePaper Mario andMario & Luigi series crossover,Mario & Luigi: Paper Jam. She is the onlyMario & Luigi-exclusive character to appear in the game. Like in the previous games, she still acts as the brothers' guide. In this game, however, she is the one who gives out the fighting tutorial, unlike in the predecessors where it wasToadsworth instead. Starlow is also shown to be powerful when she attacksLarry andLudwig inTwinsy Tropics Dungeon using her "Supernova Sparkle". She is even able to hold onto ledges using her teeth, whenKamek was trying to blow them away, but she then gets distracted when Kamek flatters her for her big shiny teeth, causing her, Paper Mario, the bros, and the princesses to get blown away. In the mission Bombs Away, Starlow can accidentally be used as a projectile whenever she forgets to bring a bomb for the trio to use.

Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga + Bowser's Minions[edit]

Starlow appears in theMinion Quest portion ofMario & Luigi: Superstar Saga + Bowser's Minions. She appears during theGwarhar Lagoon segment and gets kidnapped at one point byHermie III. She also claims that she wants to enter the "cute contest", which she,Spangle, and twoStarkisses end up winning by default thanks largely toWendy O. Koopa abdicating the title after being freed from being brainwashed. She is also a secret Flying unit inMinion Quest, unlocked by completingShowdown Time!!, starting off at level 34. Starlow's special skill, Dive Attack, allows her to dive into an opponent from the air. She has a high amount of speed, and is strong againstMecha-Fawfuls as well asMechakoopas andBob-ombs. This is the only game where she appears but does not interact with Mario, Luigi, or Princess Peach.

Mario & Luigi: Brothership[edit]

Starlow appears inMario & Luigi: Brothership.[1] Unlike in her first three appearances, she does not join Mario and Luigi on their adventure, as that role is replaced bySnoutlet. She instead accompanies Peach, and later, theIDLE group. She is first discovered onConcordia onShipshape Island's beach by a group ofConcordians who mistake her for a star. Later, she meets Bowser onWayaway Island, where he refers to her as Chippy, the alias she used inMario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story.

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate[edit]

Starlow appears as aspirit inSuper Smash Bros. Ultimate.

General information[edit]

Personality[edit]

Starlow is generally a cheerful and kind character with a few perky and feisty traits to her. She is shown to get along with most people, even if she is not acquainted with them. She is very intelligent, often shown through the help and advice she gives Mario and Luigi through their adventures, as well as Bowser duringMario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story, and also helps the Bros. by storing items and gear for them. However, she does have a stubborn side to her and can get easily annoyed by certain characters, specifically Bowser and Luigi. Her stubbornness does not get in the way of having good relations with others, another trait mainly shown through her relationship with Luigi.Mario & Luigi: Paper Jam shows off a more arrogant side to her, going as far as to view herself as the leader of the group of heroes. InMario & Luigi: Brothership, she's shown to be vain and braggadocious to some extent, claiming in the Japanese script that her current appearance is only temporary and that her true form is an "eight-head-tall beauty" (「八頭身はっとうしん」) in reference to Japanese beauty standards for women (i.e. her total height being eight times that of her head). In the English localization, this is mistranslated as "eight-headed beauty".[2] She also claims to transform into this during her Supernova Sparkle move in the Japanese version ofMario & Luigi: Paper Jam, though like the rest of the move, this is unseen.

Powers and abilities[edit]

Starlow has the ability to float, which she uses to move around freely in midair. She can also open up thestar menu, which is similar toStuffwell fromMario & Luigi: Partners in Time, though it has demos of the special attacks that Mario and Luigi unlocked. InMario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story, Starlow is shown to be quite strong, as inthreebossbattles, she could carry both Mario Bros. easily.

When she teams up with Peach, Starlow can lift heavy objects using telekinesis and shoot a pink laser beam from her star.

InMario & Luigi: Paper Jam, Starlow attacks Larry and Ludwig with a move called Supernova Sparkle. The actual move is not seen, however, as she does it when everyone is inside a pipe.

Relationships[edit]

Friends[edit]

Starlow admires Mario's bravery and treats him very kindly, although she does not hesitate to speak her mind if she needs to. Her relationship with Luigi starts out far colder inMario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story, with her often expressing annoyance at his cowardice and focusing her attention on Mario. Even so, she acknowledges that he is a hero like his brother, and inMario & Luigi: Dream Team, she is much more open with him, saying he looks cute when he sleeps and expressing genuine concern when his dreams seem to be troubling him. Starlow claims she is jealous of Luigi's ability to sleep. Her attitude towards Luigi remains similar inMario & Luigi: Paper Jam andMario & Luigi: Brothership, as she treats Luigi with more respect while still occasionally making fun of him.

Starlow shares a very good friendship with Peach, with the two being very like-minded and even being able to produce powerful combo attacks together. Starlow holds a high amount of respect for the Princess, and puts her safety before anything else.

Starlow gets along well withPrince Dreambert, although his lapses in memory over key pieces of information cause her great frustration, leading her to even call him "Forgetbert" on occasion.

Foes[edit]

Starlow and Bowser's relationship is mixed. She initially views him as a hotheaded monster and only works with him inMario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story out of necessity, even then knowing to hide her true identity in order to get him to cooperate. Calling herself "Chippy", Starlow directs Bowser from inside of him, but her bossy attitude irritates him as much as his stubbornness vexes her and the two bicker more often than not. Despite that, however, Bowser comes to think of "Chippy" as a reliable and useful ally and makes her one of his minions. Starlow shows concern for Bowser, such as when she was worried after Bowser was flattened byhis own castle, and felt sorry for him when he was trapped inside his safe. Bowser also compliments "Chippy" and is gradually taught to show her manners such asking nicely for help. Bowser eventually becomes enraged when he learns the truth that "Chippy" is in fact Starlow and feels betrayed.

In subsequentMario & Luigi games, the two are foes expressing open hostility. In the remake's add-on storyBowser Jr.'s Journey, she also has some animosity towards his son, especially after the latter's rude retort to her, although she does nonetheless encourage him with his journey and even praises his father slightly by telling him that he is "working hard" (implied to be referring to hisSuper Bowser form). InMario & Luigi: Dream Team the two are enemies once again, and aside from Bowser's comment that he "hates Starlow's voice", no reference is made to their past teamwork. For her part, Starlow views Bowser with disgust and feels that he should give up while he can.

InMario & Luigi: Brothership Starlow and Bowser are on better terms and appear to be friends again. Starlow brings Bowser a drumstick and checks in on his condition after he was hurt. Bowser initially is welcoming to Starlow visiting and calls her "Chippy" once again, but escorts her out along with Mario and Luigi when they arrive.

Profiles[edit]

Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story[edit]

  • Prima Official Game Guide description:When the Blorbs struck the Mushroom Kingdom, Princess Peach turned to the mystical Star Sprites for their assistance. The Star Sprites sent one of their youngest and brightest to help: Starlow. Starlow will accompany Mario and Luigi on their adventure, offering useful suggestions and advice whenever the heroes reach a crossraods. Hopefully they will heed that advice because the Star Sprites know more about the history (and mystery) of the Mushroom Kingdom than almost any of its inhabitants, save for Peach.

Notes[edit]

  • Starlow's dialogue sound effect has been replaced by a different one in all of the games she has appeared to date:
    • InMario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story, her sound effect is replaced with Peach's in the game's ending.
    • InMario & Luigi: Dream Team, Starlow is often erroneously givenBritta's dialogue sound effects.
    • InMario & Luigi: Paper Jam, her dialogue sound effect is sometimes replaced with either Toadette's or Toad's dialogue sound effects.
  • InMario & Luigi: Superstar Saga + Bowser's Minions, she completely lacks her unique dialogue sound and is given a regular high-pitched voice instead.
  • TheMario & Luigi: Dream TeamPrima guide erroneously refers to Starlow as male.
  • Starlow erroneously refers to herself as a representative of theStar Spirits, rather than the Star Sprites, when she introduces herself to Paper Peach in the American English version ofMario & Luigi: Paper Jam. In the British English version and the rest of the American English version, Starlow correctly refers to herself as a representative of the Star Sprites.
    • In the Italian version, sinceMario & Luigi: Dream Team, Starlow erroneously refers to herself, and is described, as a "representative of theCobalt Star Spirits".
