Stapler,The Fanged Fastener, is a member of theLegion of Stationery and the penultimate boss inPaper Mario: The Origami King. It is an oversized black stapler with King Olly's insignia on its side. Unlike the other members, it does not guard any of thestreamers, but is instead fought inOrigami Castle asKing Olly's last line of defense. It appears to have a dog-like personality, frequently emitting dog sounds throughout its battle, and is the only Legion of Stationery member to not have any dialogue.

The Stapler's shadow is seen at the beginning of the game inPeach's Castle, where it transformsBowser'sminions intoFolded Soldiers, ensuring that they cannot unfold themselves. Prior, it was also the one who kept Bowser stuck in his folded form.

Later, in Origami Castle, asMario,Olivia and Bowser corner King Olly, he sets the Stapler on them. After Mario defeats the Stapler, the staple keeping Bowser folded is destroyed, allowing Mario toHammer him, causing him to unfold and return to his normal self.

The Stapler resembles theStapler Thing fromPaper Mario: Sticker Star, but it is black rather than gray.

Battle[edit]

“You'd think I'd be used to facing art and office supplies by now...but this one is SUPER scary! The barking! The biting! Those sharp, sharp staples! Hey, wait! Those staples must be why all of our folded friends can't unfold themselves... This thing must've bit them! It locked them into angry origami forms! BAD dog! Stay strong,Mario. This overgrown guard dog may be in theLegion of Stationery, but we can teach it to roll over!”
Olivia,Paper Mario: The Origami King

Stapler has three colors of staples: gray, red, and gold, each doing more damage than the last. When it reloads, provided it is not already on gold staples, it upgrades staple types, being equipped with 30 staples of its current type.

When Stapler attacks, if Mario is close, it will use Dog Tag, attacking Mario twice. This move deals 10-11 damage with gray staples, and 20-21 damage with red or gold staples, and uses a staple per hit. If not blocked itpins Mario down to the board, wasting his next turn. Stapler then uses Untag Wag, dealing damage and freeing Mario. The damage varies depending on Mario's position and the staple type. With gray or red staples, it deals 30 damage on the closest ring and 24 damage on the second-closest ring. With gold staples, these values are doubled, dealing 60 and 48 damage respectively.

If Mario is farther away, Stapler will instead use Staple Gun, firing eight staples at Mario. Silver staples hit for 6 damage if Mario is on a closer ring or 5 if he is on a farther one. Red Staple Gun deals 9 damage on closer rings or 8 for farther ones. Gold Staple Gun deals 11-13 damage on closer rings or 10-12 for farther ones.

After one attack, Stapler willcharge up Bite Barrage to attack Mario 16 times, each hit using a staple. Gray staples deal 6-8 damage on closer rings or 5-7 on farther ones. Red staples deal 9-11 on closer rings or 8-10 on farther ones. Gold staples deal 11-13 damage on closer rings or 10-12 on farther ones. Should it run out of staples during the attack, the remaining hit will do 1 damage. If there are any remaining, it then uses Staple Gun to fire the rest of its staples. When Stapler is out of staples, it takes a turn to reload, leaving it vulnerable to another attack.

Every time Stapler is hit, one staple is wasted. Thus, it is more advantageous to use Jump attacks over Hammer attacks, as Jumps hit four times, while Hammers hit only once. Using a rush attack with the1,000-Fold Arms is even more effective, having the capacity to waste more than half of its staples.

When Mario rushes Stapler with the 1,000-Fold Arms and it gets to 1 HP, Mario is prompted to open its "mouth" so wide that it smashes open, defeating it.
