Square Enix is a Japanese video game company known for developing theFinal Fantasy,Dragon Quest, and (in collaboration withDisney)Kingdom Hearts franchises. It was created by the merger ofSquare andEnix on April 1, 2003.

Before its merger with Enix, Square was noted for makingSuper Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars in collaboration withNintendo.

Square Enix also madeMario Hoops 3-on-3 andItadaki Street DS for theNintendo DS, with the latter exclusive to Japan. Both of those DS games are crossovers between theMario franchise and one of Square Enix's franchises (Final Fantasy in the former's case, andDragon Quest in the latter's case). Another of the company's creations isMario Sports Mix, the firstMario spin-off from the company to be made for theWii. The game includes the sameFinal Fantasy characters who appear inMario Hoops 3-on-3, as well asSlime, one of theDragon Quest characters who appears inItadaki Street DS. The company logo appears inMario Hoops 3-on-3, where it can be seen on two courts:Mario Stadium andPeach Field. Square Enix also developed anotherDragon QuestMario crossover game calledFortune Street, a sequel toItadaki Street DS.

Square Enix is also one of the third-party companies represented by playable characters inSuper Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS /Wii U, withCloud Strife, the hero ofFinal Fantasy VII, available as a downloadable fighter. Also, astage based on a location fromFinal Fantasy VII,Midgar, is available. In addition, accessories forMii Fighters based onGeno (a character fromSuper Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars owned by Square Enix) andChocobo (a species from theFinal Fantasy series) were available for purchase. The secondFinal Fantasy fighter,Sephiroth, makes his debut as a DLC character inSuper Smash Bros. Ultimate, Cloud returns as a fighter, and Midgar also appears as a returning stage.Super Smash Bros. Ultimate's Challenger Pack 2 downloadable content features elements from theDragon Quest series, including the fighterHero and the stageYggdrasil's Altar, while Challenger Pack 11 (the final DLC pack forSuper Smash Bros. Ultimate) introduces downloadable content originating from the Square Enix–developedKingdom Hearts series, including the characterSora and the stageHollow Bastion. Mii Fighter items based on characters from theDragon Quest series are also available as DLC inSuper Smash Bros. Ultimate.

In 2023, aremake ofSuper Mario RPG was released, developed byArtePiazza, a frequent collaborator with Square Enix, best known for remaking several entries in theDragon Quest series.
