TheSpin Jump, also referred to as theWhirlwind Jump,[1] is aspecial move that lets the player character, as the name suggests, spin whilejumping. The properties of this jump vary significantly depending on the game. In two-dimensionalSuper Mario games, it is generally a low jump that can be performed with single button press. It can defeat certain kinds of enemies that resist normal jumps, such asKoopa Troopas, and allowMario to bounce off of certain enemies and obstacles that would otherwise be harmful to land on, such asSpinies. In three dimensionalSuper Mario series games, it is generally a high jump that further slows down Mario's descent. To perform it, the player has to either interact with specific objects, such as atornado, or spin in place for long enough then jump.
History[edit]
Super Mario series[edit]
Super Mario World[edit]
The Spin Jump first appears inSuper Mario World, where it is used by pressing. Althought it offers less height than a standard jump, it can instantly defeat moststompable enemies such asGoombas and Koopa Troopas, while allowing Mario or Luigi to bounce on unstompable enemies such as Spinies andLava Bubbles without taking damage. While Spin Jumping, Mario or Luigi can gain height by bouncing on enemies by holding
.
Chargin' Chucks,Wigglers and allKoopalings react to Spin Jumps just as they would a regular stomp, whileCircling Boo Buddies,Boo Buddy Snakes' trail, aBoo Crew's Boos,Bony Beetles' spikes,Munchers, spikes,Reznor andBowser are unaffected by Spin Jumps altogether.
The Spin Jump interacts with each of Mario and Luigi'spower-ups. AsSuper Mario or better, Spin Jumps can breakRotating Blocks from above. If aYoshi is mounted, it can also break blocks until it next lands. AsFire Mario, the Spin Jump scattersfireballs rapidly in both directions, and asCape Mario, it performs aCape Spin.[2]
In the Super NESNintendo Player's Guide, the words "Spin Jump" and "Double Jump" are used interchangeably to refer to aYoshi Boost. The name for the Spin Jump itself was retained in the guide.[3]
Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins[edit]
The Spin Jump reappears inSuper Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins. As Super Mario or Fire Mario, the player can hold and then press
, or
while in midair; Mario then either Spin Jumps or spins in midair. Mario can hit or breakblocks from above with this move (like with theGround Pound). The Spin Jump's stomp can also destroyKoopa Troopas,Koopa Shells, and some multiple-hit enemies by landing on them with it, but unlike inSuper Mario World, it does not protect from hazardous enemies. This ability cannot be performed asSmall Mario orBunny Mario.
Super Mario 64 /Super Mario 64 DS[edit]
InSuper Mario 64 andSuper Mario 64 DS, the Spin Jump occurs after jumping on aSpindrift orFly Guy or into atornado, and causes the player character to descend more slowly. In the Nintendo DS remake, Luigi also uses it while descending from aBackward Somersault.
In apre-release video ofSuper Mario 64, Mario could activate the same Spin Jump while doing aTriple Jump (it is unknown if doing a Triple Jump first is required).
Super Mario Sunshine[edit]
InSuper Mario Sunshine, the player can perform the Spin Jump at any time by rotating
and then jumping. Just like inSuper Mario 64, it grants extra height compared to a normal jump while both ascending and descending at a slower pace. The faster Mario is moving before Spin Jumping, the greater the jump height will be. Spin Jumps will gradually shakes off anygoop attached to Mario, as well as prevent him from grabbing onto ledges, unless the ledge is asand block.[4]
Super Mario Sunshine divides the
's directions into four quadrants aligned with the course's X and Y axes. A spin input is triggered by rotating
within a 10-frame window, touching all four quadrants without touching the neutral position. The minimum rotation needed to perform a spin input is just above 180°.
Spin Jumps can also be performed during aSprinkler Squirt, while running with theTurbo Nozzle (including running on top of thewater), or by rotating
while Mario is in the middle of an action such as landing or climbing from a ledge, then jumping. A normal jump orWall Jump can be converted into a Spin Jump by rotating
in midair. Jumping again after landing from an airborne Spin Jump triggers a Triple Jump.
Yoshi's Spin Jump is much higher than Mario's, andFlutter Jumps can still be performed while spinning.
New Super Mario Bros.[edit]
InNew Super Mario Bros., jumping off of aSpin Block activates a Spin Jump while launching Mario or Luigi high into the air. As inSuper Mario 64, he falls more slowly in this state. Attempting toground-pound causes him to spin downwards rapidly in a drill-like motion, known as theDrill Spin.
Super Mario Galaxy[edit]
InSuper Mario Galaxy and itsNintendo Switchport, Mario or Luigi canspin in midair to attack and gain extra height and distance, except it is done in midair, giving Mario or Luigi a little height in his jump. If performed quickly before aGround Pound, the player character performs aHoming Ground Pound.
If Mario or Luigi is caught in atornado orBone Twister, spinning propels him high into the air, with his arms rotating around his body like helicopter blades. He then gently floats down as with the Spin Jump fromSuper Mario 64 andSuper Mario Sunshine. Mario or Luigi also performs a similar Spin Jump after bouncing off aSpring Vault orSpring Topman, albeit spinning with his entire body and at a slower pace.
New Super Mario Bros. Wii[edit]
InNew Super Mario Bros. Wii, Mario, Luigi,Yellow Toad and Blue Toad can use the Spin Jump. It is performed by shaking theWii Remote. It functions most similarly to the Spin Jump inSuper Mario World, but still no longer protects from stomping otherwise hazardous enemies. Like in that game, it causesFire Mario andIce Mario to shoot afireball orIce Ball, respectively, in each direction.
The Spin Jump clears nearby clouds andFoos' fog, and causes nearbyflowers to dropcoins. It also activatesScrewtop Shrooms,Screwtop Platforms, andScrewtop Lifts, during which the character does not jump and can power the course part by spinning continuously.
Attempting to Spin Jump in the air performs theMidair Spin, which ekes out more air time, and even allowsMini Mario to fall slowly enough toWall Jump up one wall. AsPropeller Mario, both moves are replaced byflying upwards. This puts the character into a similar state to theSpin Block inNew Super Mario Bros., where they fall slowly and canDrill Spin by pressing
. They can now also cancel the Drill Spin by releasing
, and further slow their descent by shaking the Wii Remote.
Super Mario Galaxy 2[edit]
The spin returns inSuper Mario Galaxy 2 and its Nintendo Switchport, behaving exactly the same as inSuper Mario Galaxy.
New Super Mario Bros. U /New Super Luigi U /New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe[edit]
InNew Super Mario Bros. U,New Super Luigi U, andNew Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe, the Spin Jump functions as it did inNew Super Mario Bros. Wii.Flying Squirrel Mario's Spin Jump is higher than the standard jump. Also as Flying Squirrel Mario, attempting toMidair Spin propels the player character upwards with aFlying Squirrel Jump, which can be done indefinitely asP Flying Squirrel Mario.
Super Mario 3D World /Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury[edit]
The Spin Jump returns inSuper Mario 3D World andits port, being performed like inSuper Mario Sunshine by rotating
and then jumping while the character is spinning in place. It is the highest jump that any of the characters can perform, and slows the player's descent.
The Spin Jump is also automatically performed if a player jumps on another player in midair.
Super Mario Maker /Super Mario Maker for Nintendo 3DS[edit]
InSuper Mario Maker andSuper Mario Maker for Nintendo 3DS, the Spin Jump can be used in theSuper Mario World andNew Super Mario Bros. U game styles. It retains its ability to breakRotating Blocks in theSuper Mario World game style, and to defeat certain enemies such as Galoombas and Koopa Troopas. Unlike inNew Super Mario Bros. U, it can be used to jump on most spiked enemies in both game styles, but notably notGrinders as was possible inSuper Mario World.
TheMidair Spin also returns in theNew Super Mario Bros. U game style.
Super Mario Run[edit]
InSuper Mario Run, when the player jumps from aTrampoline, they can can continue to hold the screen to spin as they fall. This reduces forward speed and falling speed. This is like how Spin Blocks work inNew Super Mario Bros, but without spinning while rising. This spin ends immediately once the screen is released, if an enemy is stomped, and when landing.
Super Mario Odyssey[edit]
InSuper Mario Odyssey, Mario performs the same Spin Jump move fromSuper Mario 64 when he jumps off aHat Trampoline. He can also perform the variant seen inSuper Mario Sunshine andSuper Mario 3D World when the player rotates the Control Stick (which makes him spin in place) and then performs any jump. If MarioGround Pounds while Spin Jumping, he instead performs theDrill Spin to drop down quickly. The Drill Spin is more like a Ground Pound than in prior games, as it has endlag on conclusion, but retains the ability to swap into and out of the state freely as with the version used by Propeller Mario. When canceling a Drill Spin while performing the Spin Jump fromSuper Mario 64, the slow falling speed of the Spin Jump is retained. When canceling a Drill Spin while performing the Spin Jump fromSuper Mario Sunshine andSuper Mario 3D World, the slow falling speed of the Spin Jump is lost.
Pressing while spinning
will cause aSpin Throw to be performed instead of a Cap Throw, though if the Spin Jump was caused by Hat Trampolines, a regular Cap Throw happens. In either case, the attack cancels the spinning or a Spin Jump.
Super Mario Maker 2[edit]
InSuper Mario Maker 2, the Spin Jump andMidair Spin return with the same properties as in the game'spredecessor.
In theSuper Mario 3D World game style, the Spin Jump from that game can be performed by pressing and one of the shoulder buttons (
,
,
, or
) while holding ↑ on
.
Super Mario Bros. Wonder[edit]
The Spin Jump reappears inSuper Mario Bros. Wonder, functioning as inNew Super Mario Bros. U. Spin Jumping asBubble Mario will blow a bubble on each side. The Boosting Spin Jumpbadge grants the player the ability to perform a small Spin Jump in midair, replacing their Midair Spin.
Mario Kart series[edit]
In theMario Kart series, the player can use aCape Feather to perform a Spin Jump, which also allows them to perform aJump Boost.
Super Smash Bros. series[edit]
In theSuper Smash Bros. series, Mario,Dr. Mario, and Luigi use moves known asMario Tornado,Dr. Tornado, andLuigi Cyclone, respectively. These moves look similar to and could be based on the Spin Jump. The former two also have access toCape andSuper Sheet, respectively, which can reflect projectiles in a similar manner to the Cape Spin.
Paper Mario series[edit]
The Spin Jump appears as aBattle Card inPaper Mario: Color Splash. It uses red paint and has both a standard and Big variant. When using the move, Mario jumps above the targeted enemy and begins to spin. When
is pressed, Mario will slam downwards onto the enemy. A shockwave is created with a Nice or betterAction Command, increasing in size with Great or Excellent, that deals half damage to other enemies. Unlike theHammer cards, the shockwave can hit floating or aerial enemies. The jump can also hit spiked enemies without damaging Mario.
Mario & Luigi series[edit]
In theMario & Luigi series, there is a recurringBros. Move namedSpin Jump which has two characters stand on each other and spin to hover across wide gaps. Mario and Luigi gain this move in most games.
Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga /Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga + Bowser's Minions[edit]
InMario & Luigi: Superstar Saga and its remakeMario & Luigi: Superstar Saga + Bowser's Minions, Mario and Luigi learnSplash Bros., aBros. Attack which uses the Bros. Move Spin Jump. However, the early portion of the attack has Mario spinning alone, resembling a Spin Jump. Splash Bros. with theAdvanced Command, or Super Splash Bros. in the remake, only has Mario spin, more closely resembling Spin Jumping. Mario also performs a quick Spin Jump when greetingPopple andRookie in theWoohoo Hooniversity.
Mario & Luigi: Dream Team[edit]
InMario & Luigi: Dream Team, the Bros. AttacksBye-Bye Cannon andDropchopper end with spinning stomps from Mario and Luigi. Droppchopper's ending further ignores spikes, like Spin Jumps do in 2D games of theSuper Mario series.Giant Luigi and Mario can useDrill Stomp, a Bros. Attack where they spin while jumping.
Mario & Luigi: Brothership[edit]
InMario & Luigi: Brothership, Mario and Luigi perform a Spin Jump in a similar manner to the 3DSuper Mario games after bouncing off aBouncy Bloom.
Mario Sports Mix[edit]
InMario Sports Mix, the Spin Jump is used as a tactic for blocking shots in basketball. While Mario is capable of performing this move, more characters are also able to perform this move such asToad,Princess Peach, andYoshi (though the latter two have variations of the move such as adding hearts or using a tongue as a part of the attack).
Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Winter Games[edit]
In theNintendo DS version ofMario & Sonic at the Olympic Winter Games, the Spin Jump appears as Mario's special boost inRocket Ski Jumping, where it is referred to as theSpinning Jump.
Donkey Kong Bananza[edit]
InDonkey Kong Bananza,Donkey Kong is able to learn the Spin Jump skill using Skill Points. It functions similarly to the Spin Jump inSuper Mario 3D World andSuper Mario Odyssey, and his pose during the move greatly resembles hisSpinning Kong attack fromSuper Smash Bros.
